The cigarette stuck on Mothra's face is absolutely hilarious. Totally missed that. Definitely now up there in my top comedic Godzilla moments, right next to the dude who jumped out a window in Destroy All Monsters.

One theory i've heard over the years as to why the 'fruit juices' kept Ebirah away is because the fruit is citrus, and akin to lemons. Lemon juice is commonly served alongshide or on shellfish. So, the citrus smell keeps Ebirah at bay. A similar joke was used in the 80's movie 'Leonard Part 6' with Bill Cosby. Except he used sticks of margarine against Lobsters.

Ngl this is one of my all time favorite Showa films. I loved the fun, lighthearted tone and the amazing practical effects with Ebirah. Also the humans had great personalities and didn't bore out the story.

That's what I'm saying. I never got why this film has such a mediocre to bad reputation when other, more popular Showa films have weaker and more boring human elements - Three Headed Monster and Destroy All Monsters come to mind. Imo of course. This one always slotted in with G vs Mothra. G vs Mecha G, and Son of Godzilla for me. Fun, relatively breezy, colorful G romps with humans that have enough personality to them to make their parts not totally drag.

Okay, this movie means a lot to me. I say this because when I watched it I was at like a really bad time. I was sad. And then I went to tubi, and I saw this movie. I was like "It's just a dumb Kaiju movie" I had nothing else to do so I watched it. And man, this movie cheered me up. It was the right amount of silliness and creativity. I just had a big dumb smile watching it. My older brother joined me. We both laughed at how silly this movie was, how the suits looked silly yet good. That was a really good moment. I love this movie man.

I always assumed the first Godzilla (1954) was impervious to electricity, while the second incarnation of the character was weak to it, yet grew somewhat resistant. In Raids again I rationalise Godzilla's somewhat resistance to adrenaline, he's in the heat of battle with Anguirus. In King Kong vs Godzilla tho, he clearly has a weakness to it, yet progressively (from Mothra vs - vs Megalon) his constant exposure grants him some resistance to it, eventually he's even able to utilise it offensively in vs Mechagodzilla. IDK
@bruhmingo
@bruhmingo 2 жыл бұрын
To me it was never an issue. Here, it simply wakes him up, but I imagine it still hurt. Similar to how we will use electricity in a defibrillator to restore someone’s normal heart rate, yet if you gave that shock to a person under normal circumstances it would hurt terribly. Godzilla is clearly hurt by electricity, but that doesn’t mean he wouldn’t inadvertently gain a boost of energy or at the very least wake up from it.

Always enjoyed this one for some reason. It’s got a likable cast of characters and the island adventure is fun and a nice change of pace. Yeah I can obviously see it being a Kong film originally but having Godzilla instead gives this it’s weird unique identity.

When I first saw this as a teen I wasn't that impressed by this film, but going back and re-watching it early in this year, I really came around to love it. So much soul in it, from the efforts done in the fights, setting, and music. The human cast and plot is nice and straightforward and sometimes, that's all you need. It's just flat out a good Godzilla movie.

This was the VERY FIRST Godzilla movie I ever watched. Years and years ago I found the VHS of this movie, the version titled Godzilla Versus The Sea Monster at Wal-Mart back in the late 90’s I believe. I remember LOVING it to death when I was child, and though I of course view it a bit differently as of today, I can’t help but continue to be fascinated by the things surrounding these movies and how they came to be. Ebirah to this day is one of my favorite characters with how unnaturally menacing he looks in this. Yes in some parts he looks silly and it’s hilarious to know he’s a shrimp, but still! Very good job covering this one, fellow!

Definitely one of the most underrated Godzilla movies (IMO). Masaru Sato's music, I think blended well with Jun Fukuda's style of direction (the same would be true with Son of Godzilla & Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla). I think that had Fukuda lived well into the 2000s, with all of the G festivals and conventions now in full blossom, his tone towards his kaiju work might have changed, as he would have seen all of the love and appreciation many fans had with his films.

In my chronological watch, just got up to ebirah last night and it is drastically lower in quality in all ares from the series highs, felt way more like a tv movie, not nearly as epic with a much smaller scale than the previous movies, and a bunch of silly moments. I missed the epic scores of the previous movies, the james bond/surf music was so out of place. Ebirah as a villain is great and the few scenes of him attacking ships and boats is amazing but overall it was no where near the quality of the 3 films that preceded it, which had silly moments but i loved (mothra vs godzill, ghidorah the 3 headed monster, and astro monster) which were all much larger scale than Ebirah felt to me
@DrMadd
@DrMadd 7 ай бұрын
@@ericg1100I feel the complete opposite. After Astro Monster was so over the top with its stakes it was refreshing to have a much more grounded Godzilla film. Plus this has some of the best monster sequences in the series up to this point. This doesn’t have the issue a lot of Honda’s films had of constantly replaying the same shots of model tanks firing over and over to fill out the runtime.

Another great video on the history of Godzilla films. Personally I love the showa era films the most so I’m really enjoying watching these videos. I’ve actually watched many of them multiple times. Ebirah, Horror of the Deep is one of my personal favorites. I enjoy the South Pacific island setting and everything about the film feels fresh. The camera angles, the fast paced story and action, and even the funky music score all make for a super entertaining Godzilla romp. I’m looking forward to seeing the videos for the history of the remaining showa era movies, specially Godzilla vs Gigan and Jun Fukuda’s magnum opus, Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla. Please continue making these awesome videos!

Only rough parts for me was Godzilla's face looked pretty rough and the Giant Condor fight has to be the most egregious shaky cam I've ever seen.

Regarding 13:15 I agree, the term “suspension of disbelief” is thrown around as an excuse way too often. We suspend disbelief for what defies our world, not what defies the world of the piece of fiction. In other words, if a piece of fiction establishes rules, we will believe them no matter what, but if it breaks its own rules, we lose suspension of disbelief because no effort is then made to even try and be consistent or believable. These movies establish right away that giant monsters exist, so very little suspension of disbelief is needed, but if you establish rules that say people still behave in realistic ways we would expect in real life and then break that rule, then we have a problem. Basically when people complain about something being unbelievable in fiction, we don’t care that it doesn’t make sense in the real world, we are saying it doesn’t make sense in the world the film wants to sell us on. Long rant, but I see so many people using this as an excuse to justify any form of sloppy writing.

@Low Bro Mate, even Bill himself in the video admits he doesn't care for it much besides the monster action. As a piece of cinema, it's got colourful direction & tells a strong message on willpower, showcased through the characters' survival. But it's certainly nothing compared to films like 'Taxi Driver' & The Godfather. Entertainment aside, it's a good enough film, just not truly spectacular.

Second or third favorite Showa film and one of my favorite Goji films in general, easily in top 10. I get they can look a little low budget at times, but for some reason I find all the special effects in this movie to be so charming, especially the model work for the evil base. They were clearly trying really hard with what little they had. I love the fights with Ebirah - best choreographed fights up to that point IMO. I even loved the human characters and plot and agree with the guy who said it could have been a good movie even without the kaiju. I'm a sucker for pulp style movies, and this hits all the right buttons.

This was the first Godzilla film I ever saw as a kid (without counting the 1998 american version). I'm very fond with this one since my father bought it for me during his trip to Japan. Back then because it was in japanese only I couldn't understand the dialogues, but it was very fun seeing Godzilla and Ebirah playing volleyball with those rocks. 😂 Oh and I was infatuated by Dayo..

Loved this movie as a kid. Like you, I used to watch it for the monster fights, but in hindsight it also had one of the best human stories of the Showa era. It reminds me of old-school Doctor Who. Good guys accidentally arrive somewhere and rescue an oppressed population from slavery by using their brains rather than attacking with guns. The main characters are all given something to do, and having one of them get captured was a good way to connect the slave-rebellion sub-plot to the main story. It's a feel good movie, and everything about it is so 60's. The music, the fashion, even the colourfulness of the sets and costumes. Considering the budget and the limitations of technology at the time everything looks great.

This was my first Godzilla film. Doesn't stop me saying it's not great. But I love Godzilla, this was a random film on Ch4 on a Saturday afternoon I saw as a kid and I was captivated.

You know, Bill, your comment on the pistol shrimp should give us fans a lot of ideas on a new revamped Ebirah. Or maybe the deadlier mantis shrimp.

great vid! and don't be embarrassed about pretending to be godzilla in the pool. when i was a kid in the fall and winter, i would pretend i had atomic breath and attack the windows and stuff in the car. drove my parents crazy as i fogged up the windows. :)
