Me and a buddy managed to watch from the ‘54 Godzilla all the way to vs. MechaGodzilla 2 before he ETS’d, sometimes watching 3 movies a night. I even threw down the money to get the Criterion collection JUST for the original King Kong vs. Godzilla. I really gotta thank you Bill for reigniting my Godzilla spark.

By far, Gigan is the most edgy, fanfic-esque monster that you'd expect a 12-year-old to come up with as his OC. "He's part robot and part monster AND he has scythes for hands AND a buzzsaw on his stomach AND a laser AND he's the first monster to make Godzilla bleed" The fact that they doubled down on Gigan in Final Wars to give him chainsaws for hands is even more hilarious and shows why Gigan is so iconic despite being in some of the worst Godzilla movies.

Im glad Haruo Nakajima gets the respect he deserves. I was lucky enough to see him at a con. It was a pretty boring booth untill he showed up as the other godzilla suit actors looked hungover or something but then in comes the original Gman just smiling and looking like he's genuinely happy people were there for him. He didn't sit behind the booth he went straight into the line shaking hands signing posters and trying his best to answer questions and tell stories of being in the suit. He even did the godzilla walk. Such an awesome guy.

I love this movie. Probably my single most rewatched Showa era film. The human characters kept me charmed enough as a kid and I loved all the monster action, reused/re-contexted and new. I felt it never overdid it’s silliness, but didn’t try to act like it didn’t exist either. Just kinda embraced it and balanced it in a way most the other Showa movies fail to.

Gigan is easily the best part of this movie, fittingly enough. He had a ton of personality (yes, the personality of a hyperactive sadistic bastard, but that's okay for a monster) and the design has been a lot of fun for other artists and SPFX creators to put their own spin on.

I'm 55. This was the first Godzilla movie I ever saw, so I am extremely biased. Godzilla vs Gigan is pure stupid fun. I had no idea what stock footage was. The human characters were silly, the monster action was great, and I will always love this movie. As I matured I came to appreciate the seriousness of Godzilla. So yeah, I love the crap out of this movie. TY for the review.

Ditto. I'm 30 and growing up, I had only 3 VHS tapes to watch Godzilla: this one, King Kong, and the first MechaGodzilla. And of the 3, Vs Gigan was my favorite for the goofy human portion, characters, and the endless Gigan and Ghidorah destroying the city was my first experience of senseless destruction.

My 7 year old daughter and I have watched all the Showa and Heisei Godzilla movies together. This is her favorite one of all. She loves the roach aliens and even called this movie "The Godzilla with roaches," for a while. When I was her age this was amongst my least favorite. So, thanks to her, I've seen it more in the last 18 months than I had in almost 40 years before that. We came across this series of yours while searching her episodes of Godziban. I'm willing to bet that there were countless fans, as well as Toho employees, that made more than a conscious effort to come up With a name for a Kaiju. And I'm sure once a name is established, a creature developed afterwards. I must admit that, as a small child, coming up with a name for a new Toho monster I was creating was definitely one of my favorite things to do. Sometimes the design would be first, but most of the time the name was what struck me initially. Then I would flesh out an origin story. Sort of like how a guitarist comes across a super catchy riff or hook before he completes his song, or brings it to the rest of the band to flesh it out. That was part of the excitement for me as I would daydream coming home on the school bus. Once a creature was established, I would be able to go to my canvas and create a new movie poster for this new foe that would fight godzilla. If the name rolled off the tongue and sounded cool, more than likely the monster itself would look awesome. Once again, I was seven and eight when I would do these things, so I was often ashamed to admit such things to people that didn't know anything about Godzilla at the time. Now I am absolutely stoked to see more and more people discovering this universe of monsters and coming up with their own. As always, I apologize for the rent. I'm dictating this into my phone, so please excuse any grammatical error, or problems with sentence structure. Anyone else out there create their own Kaiju/Kaiju names and origin stories as a kid? Were you afraid to show other people at the time because you didn't think anyone would understand?
@LepidopteranLiliumoth

Coming up with monsters in that way is one of those great relaxing things ive done since I was a kid. Names were always the hard part for me, but it made me realize how many kaiju names have "Ah" sounds but not many "Oh" sounds. It makes me happy that such joy can be shared with people who did the same thing.

@gojiraguy200

Actually, you only see their true shadows when their systems temporarily get messed up, implying that they aren't in skin suits, but that their human appearances are just some form of projection linked to their technology. When their systems are disrupted, you see their true shadows, and when the tower is destroyed, you see their true bodies. Kinda cool to imagine a bunch of big freaky cockroaches walking around upright in broad daylight disguised by holograms!

Idk man I love the fight in this movie. People always complain about the monsters not getting enough screen time but here we get a half hour long monster fight filled with some pretty brutal moments. The footage is slowed down to make them move slower and look bigger and I think it works well. The biggest problem is indeed the stock footage but that was just the state of the Japanese film industry at the time: shambles. Overall this is one of my favorite showa films and the human cast has enough idiosyncrasies to be entertaining. Also its just dripping with the 70's aesthetic, from the effects to the music to Gigan himself.

First saw this on Thanksgiving evening 1980. It was a premier on KTLA Channel 5 and it kicked of their Thanksgiving kaiju marathon that would last through Black Friday. And I petty much agree with Bill's synopsis of this movie. Yes, I found the people part more interesting than the creatures arc. The ever lasting monster fight scenes, would remind me later of what we would see in the Heisei series.

Fantastic video as always. I think Godzilla vs. Gigan was the first Godzilla film I saw. I remember the UK TV Channel 4 showing this and Godzilla vs. Megalon, too many years ago to count. I have a fondness for it but I hold my hands up, it's sheer nostalgia! I remember thinking the stock destruction scenes (I'd no idea since I'd never seen them before) and the fight scenes were pretty badass. It also established my liking for the three monsters appearing alongside Godzilla: Gigan for his sheer weirdness and gnarly hook-hands; Ghidorah, also for his looks and apparent spot as Godzilla's archenemy ("I would've gottrn away with it, if it weren't for you meddling kaijs!") amd Anguirus, for the idea, even if only in this film, that Godzilla had someone watching his back.

As a kid Godzilla vs. Megalon was the first Godzilla video my folks got for me. When I learned there was a Godzilla vs. Gigan I made an effort to see it and always felt like it had a way more serious tone than Megalon. Even as a child though, I could tell they used stock footage for part of the fight Gigan had with Godzilla in Megalon and it made me want to see Gigan's movie all the more. Godzilla vs. Gigan was one of two (the other being Destroy All Monsters) to where even though I finally ended up being able to watch it when it was on TV, I never got a copy of it on VHS. That is, of ones that came out before 1985's release.

Everyone who portrayed a Godzilla monster are troopers. They basically did pro wrestling in 150 lbs suits, sometimes bent over, sometimes walking through water, sometimes around pyro. Honestly, I really liked this one. The human plot gave a lot of great goofy energy to the proceedings, and I wasn't as turned off by the slow pace of the monster material as you. I wind up watching this in the same mindset I watch Super Sentai with, and it fits like a glove in that milieu. This movie's my go-to for illustrating the importance of an entertaining human story in this franchise; the next movie, despite otherwise having near identical strengths and weaknesses, I found nearly unwatchable due to a horrendously dull human story.

Dad took us (my younger brother and I) both times, and when we were babies he'd take his turn giving us a bottle late at night while watching old kung fu and kaiju movies on TV. We both grew up loving those movies, though I think me somewhat moreso. Dad went on to his reward last year, the weekend before Memorial Day 2021 -- and with my brother far enough away, busy with his own family, I no longer have anyone to watch such films with anymore. (I watch other things with my elderly Mom to spend time with her; she doesn't care for these films, doesn't hate them, just can't really get into them.)

Some more personal trivia about the film: the monsters briefly talking was so jarring when I first saw it as a kid, that I was SURE Dad had dubbed the language in personally himself while sitting next to me, and kind of accused him of it -- which he rightly denied, but for a long time I really thought he had. (Somehow the TV cuts I occasionally caught later didn't make clear the vocals were really in the English dub.) I was somewhat disappointed as a kid to see so little of Monster Island, considering that in English that's the film's title! I had already been briefly introduced to the island as Godzilla's home in the Megalon film (which was released in my area first a year or so earlier), and wanted to see more of it. I liked what I saw, but it wasn't really set there. The Monsterland plot made very little impression on me, and I was confused though kind of impressed about the Godzilla Tower at the theme park. I had already seen Gigan alongside Megalon, so was happy to see him again and more of him. Anguirus and Ghidora were both new to me, of course, and I REALLY enjoyed both of them! I never did much like puppy dogs, and but I'd sure take an Anguirus as a faithful dog-like critter! The blood in the fights was a little jarring but didn't otherwise make a negative impression on me: monsters were fighting, it was a tough fight, sure. The Godzilla Tower could shoot a breath beam, too! The bad guys were alien cockroaches! I remembered Space Hunter Nebula M as Gigan's home from v-Megalon, and badly wanted to see that, but alas. All in all I loved it a lot, at the time, although I do recall noticing the stock footage aspect -- why was Ghidora shooting Megalon's yellow beams!? {g} Gigan remains one of my favorite designs (less so his super-literally-'edgy' Millennium design for Final Wars). This is also the only Showa Era Godzilla score I own the complete album to aside from G54: it covers a lot of tracks from the series history.

As bad as it is, this movie holds a very special place in my memories. It was my first ever Godzilla movie I rented with my dad and we sat and watched together. Still remember the video rental place. Though it is now a convenience store. Still though makes me smile running in to get a Godzilla movie on VHS.

This was my favorite Showa-era Godzilla movie when I was a kid. As an adult though... yeah, the endless monster action makes me nod out. Regardless, I love classic Gigan, and I can't freaking wait for the new live action short Toho got crowdfunded.

I'm not someone who follows Godzilla history but this was just so interesting. Very informative. It's fun to look back on series that have continued after I lost interest.

I wonder if Godzilla vs. Gigan holds a special place in many hearts due to a late 80's early 90's VHS release. I know I was 5 years old when we found it in a K-Mart on sale. My brother had seen Godzilla 1985 in theaters with my dad, so he managed to convince my mom to pick this up. It was my first Godzilla movie, and so I had no clue it recycled footage or had all kinds of other problems. I watched it repeatedly, and it seemed to rarely be syndicated for TNT's MonsterVision marathons (which is where I recorded most of my other Godzilla movies from). Despite clearly being a lower budget, the picture quality and lighting of its original footage is actually surprisingly good, especially when compared to Godzilla vs. Megalon after, which looks like a more dated film in comparison. Going back as an adult, I'll admit that I still find the human drama elements to be the most entertaining, if only because of how colorful and different they are. There aren't a lot of flicks with such a crew in general, and it really helps identify this film as one of a kind, even among its brethren. But you're right, on rewatching, the fighting is perhaps some of the weakest due to the recycled footage. There's still a lot to like, but it's definitely dragged down. I will always have a soft spot for it, but it's nowhere near as good as my memories of it are.
