Two notes: When the centaur rides an animal, her horse legs somehow turns into human legs. Also, when Death Adder falls off the dragon, his scream came from Rambo First Blood where the sheriff falls off the helicopter after Rambo throws a rock at it.

The scream is basically an easter egg because in Golden Axe 1 they used a scream from First Blood (that one deputy who got caught that spike trap Rambo set up) as well as a scream from Conan the Barbarian

Using voice or music samples from movies wasn't uncommon back then. Check out "Oddly familiar" from Uncanny X, he has tons of videos with examples. Back then it was easier to just rip something from movies or tv shows just like today it's easier to have AI create something.
@BlackArroToons

@@ShadowAngel-lt8nw Thanks. Music would often take audio clips from movies back then (Industrial music for example), but interesting to learn video games did too.

@@BlackArroToons Oh in the 80's and 90's games basically stole from everything. A lot of box over art was directly stolen from movie posters or movie frames. For example Turrican 1 is from a Manowar album, Metal Gear (NES) cover is a promo picture of Michael Biehn from Terminator 1. Contra of course has Schwarzenegger from Predator in the cover art. Even in game character pictures were sometimes directly traced from actors and musicians. Realms of Arkania is really interesting, as literally every NPC Portrait is some actor or musician, you get David Bowie, Ben Kingsley, Steve Buscemi, Björk, Audrey Hepburn, Sean Connery, Meg Ryan and a lot of others. Same as Metal Gear 2, were the portraits are clearly people like Sean Connery, Einstein, Richard Crenna, Dolph Lundgren and so on. And as for music and samples: Double Dragon 2 has a rip-off of Phil Collin's Easy Lover, Doom is all sorts of Metal songs copied straight, Turrican 1 again uses music straight from the Transformer Movie. Even Yuzo Koshiro lifted most of the Streets of Rage 2 soundtrack from songs, the most blatant example, because it's basically 1:1 copy is the song Under Logic which is Move any Mountain by The Shamen. To get back to Golden Axe: The Master System version features a ending cutscene, the pictures are all taken directly from Conan the Barbarian. If anything it was uncommon if a game didn't steal its graphics, character portraits, music or sound effects from somewhere back then.
@BlackArroToons
@BlackArroToons 9 күн бұрын
@@ShadowAngel-lt8nw Thanks! I did hear of some of those things, including the box cover art and some copyright issues for some of the cover art artists sometimes with the Arnold action movies. I was listening to Yuzo Koshiro's Streets of Rage songs which are classics, and did hear similar beats/tunes of musician songs elsewhere too. I'll have to listen to that song you mentioned, thanks.

It's not really that weird. The Mega Drive was way, way, way too weak for this game and by the time the Saturn came out, nobody was interested in 2D anymore. It was all about 3D and Polygons then. On top of that, the game was and is incredibly difficult to emulate properly, i think it's still not 100% accurate in the audio department, it took decades for Mame to make it playable without too many graphical issues.

My brothers and I would just get an itch sometimes, usually after watching some medieval movie. We'd get 4 people and "group hug" as many bosses as we could. A local university had this game and we'd piss away a pile of quarters. This game is one of the biggest reasons I hated Sega back in the day. I would have bought any system they put this game on but they wouldn't. I've even written letters to Sega, begging them to release it. "Tell me where to send my money." Sega was not interested in releasing an already-done game to a home console. I think the Saturn would have done just fine. I've never had the money to get an arcade cabinet from back in the day.

The last fanfare song, after death adder and gillius falls (the “fin” screen) is a tribute to the stage 1 song on the first golden axe. Edit: ohh and I’m still convinced that both Amazon bosses are inspired by Brigitte Nielsen and Wendy O’ Williams :)

Golden Axe II The Revenge Of Death Adder was and still is an incredible game but it was also the start of the seachange of the arcade scene which lead to its demise in the west at least the end of its second boom period. Up to that point SEGA made a point of offering the deluxe more expensive arcade cabinet and the cheaper version but they started to make more deluxe versions only which weren't available at the smaller arcade venues but in the larger ones at the mall or shopping restaurant chain which by 97 it got crazy with arcade attraction rides when SEGA and Namco but mainly SEGA started to push towards their own arcade centres as semi theme parks. Which squeezed out a lot of the normal indie arcade operators. Add that to playstation capturing more casual gamers to their brand they help sever the ties between arcade and console for good where before there was a symbiotic healthy tie between consoles and arcades as gamers knew where they came from, sony didnt totally rely on arcade ports for its success and as arcades started to disappear it was the perfect storm that fed into that decline.

I adore this game - when dad did badminton 🏸 (I've just lost him recently, but what he left us is life changing....) - there was a single arcade that I played on whilst dad played; he usually gave me 3 quid each game of his to keep me from being bored... It started with Gang wars by snk (quite a rare game!) Then mercs, then swapped to golden axe.... And then the revenge of adder boi!! I was amazed by it and was so hoping it would come to my Saturn that was due for me at Xmas (again from dad....😢) - I have such a connection with that game I really do and it was such a missed opportunity because everyone wanted polygons and thought of graphics like this as "16 bit" or something.... Later the sports centre decided to do what every arcade operator with a single cabinet does..... ...Put street fighter 2 turbo in there and move the machine to the entrance lol
