I was a brown belt in Judo Sankyu which =Blue belt in BJJ and I took a flight from FL to Rickson's school in Los Angeles in 1994 but Rickson was in France teaching a seminar. So I spent 1 week training at Rickson school and beat the crap out of all his students. So I did NOT learn shit. So I thought it was just my size so I asked this big guy to roll with me. He showed up and while I was beating him with Judo technique the teachers told me to chill out after this douche tried to gram by balls. I did not yet know I was getting totally ripped off as I did NOT learn shit and I beat the entire schools ass. Then this douche sucker punched me and I wanted to BEAT HIS ASS for real and they told me to leave. The Gracie's are Pussies. Why are there NOT any Gracie's in MMA?

​​@@jamesmcjamesington631 The Gracie's got to brand "Brazilian Jiu-jitsu" but they were not the only or the first Brazilian grappling system. Luta Livre was around concurrently to Gracie Jiu-jitsu. But they didn't have a big marketing arm. So most people don't know about it. But Luta Livre went toe to toe with GJJ guys, often winning. Euclides Peirera famously submitted Carlson Gracie. Think about it, how can you even have challenge matches if there weren't other grapplers around?

That's just plain wrong! Newaza Tanabe formed a small group of like-minded Jujutsu students and trained for the sole purpose of defeating Kano Jigoro's Judo students. Which were whipping all the Jujutsu students around making them look bad. Fusen Ryu like all Jujutsu schools only had limited number of Ground techniques and is certainly not a coherent whole, they are there if you look through all the schools of Jujutsu but you will be hard pressed to find the ground techniques you hold so dear in Fusen Ryu. If what you were saying were correct than any student of the Fusen Ryu school could easily defeat a high ranking Judo student and that *never* happened. After the defeat Kano did ask him to teach his students the techniques he developed - Kano was already a master of two differing schools of Jujutsu so he didn't need the whole Fusen Ryu curriculum in his dojo only the newaza component which he and his group developed. Maeda was a newaza specialist and that is what became "Jiu" (which does not mean anything in any language) and "Jitsu" which is a mispelling of Jutsu (and means something else) but then again no one has accused the Brazillians of being smart or how to run anything (like the Olympic Games), what a fracking disaster. Don't believe the Gracie half truths.

He then became a buddhist priest and lwft the clan. He was an expert in 18 different styles undefeated. He founded Fusen Ryu because his surname was Fusen, people called motsugai takeda Fusen. Tanabe learned from motsugai takeda school. 1906 the gane of ju jutsu is the first book on jujutsu from tanabe students Yukio Tani. its obvious Tanabe will not develop a whole ground game to defeat judokas that ground game was already in existanxe as part of the samurai ju jutsu, he learned it from takeda school. At that time kano was collecting different styles drom different ryus, and so he added the ju jutsu techniques to judo he was lacking when tanabe show his students the importance of newaza. Anyways in 1916 Ad Santel using catch wrestling defeated the whole Kodokan. All these submissions were knew to them and many were expelled from the kodokan and went learning catch as catch can a tradition that continued in shoot wrestling in japan up until today with Sakuraba. So today Bjj is a mix of catch and jujutsu (from Maedas judos that was Tanabe newaza + all the catch Maeda learned ). When maeda arrived to brazil there was already a book on jujutsu and a school founded by yukio Tani in England that was depicting nearly 80% of today Bjj by Yukio Tani pupil of Tanabe. The Gracies learned a lot of catch wrestling and mixed it into the jujutsu they got from Maeda and other local judo masters.

If you know anything about how Ko-budo (old martial arts) is preserved in Japan, this is obvious. Where is the ground game of Fusen? (crickets chirping.) Japanese forget No-Thing. And the story of the tokyo police match defeat with judo has been told so many times by so many ill-informed people the fib grows each time. There was a match. Results were mixed. Not 100%. Kodokan judo ground technique is not merely a derivative of Fusen-ryu. Kodokan already had newaza teachers at the time of the match. They added to the staff. Actually 柔術 (じゅうじゅつ) phonetically based on the kana is jee-yu-ji-yu-tsu - said quickly/properly jujutsu, but that's how Jiujutsu comes about some times. Jitsu is just a mispronunciation. 柔 what does that mean? We can pretty much nuke the idea that Helio Gracie put leverage and softness into "jijitsu" too. While we're in pursuit of truth.

Mataemon's newaza was his OWN creation seperate from his Fusen Ryu as is explained in Yukio Tani's book Game of Jiujitsu...lol Also all the Fusen Ryu on youtube from Japan shows no ground work at all. And Newaza/Ground techniques where you fight off your back in NOT in any Traditional Samurai Jujutsu schools because ground work on the battle field is suicide, in fact I bet you cant link a Samurai era jujutsu video or book that shows any ground work. With the closet being "seated Jujutsu techniques" which is hardly similar to guard work type grappling.

It's not a specific club. Kosen Judo is just a set of rules that apply to University judokas. They fight in teams of ten. Pulling guard is legal, and there is no time limit on the ground. The Ippon rule is still there, but you need two of them to win.

It was my understanding that this is why Maeda changed the name of his fighting style from judo to Jiu-Jitsu. So he could do prize fighting

Kano didn't win the right, yes I said that correctly (he had to petition the governing body over martial arts, in Japan, to change the name to Judo), until many years later. I believe it was in the 30's when he was able to call it Judo.

I have been told by a girl who studied brazillian Ju-Jitsu that it is very much dance influenced because when the brazillians were training their activities needed to be unnoticed, so I'm guessing it is much more flowing and movement oriented, whereas Ju-Jitsu is more in the realms of grappling and offensive form of Judu, I atteneded classes for 'Sports Jitsu' and another modern version of Ju-Jitsu.

​@@mcmc1863 I actually attended three different ju-jitsu clubs the first as I mentioned was sports Jitsu (probably the closest to main stream Ju-jitsu, it was full contact and run by the british army boxing champion, It was really good, probably more physical than a lot of other martial arts, bloody nose on my first day, but good for fitness. Then I moved and went to a different club, where weapons seemed to be the focus, which didn't really take my interest as it seemed impractical and the teacher was very impatient. Finally and last but not least I joined a club that had developed its own style of Ju-Jitsu probably had strong connections to the original Ju-jitsu. Again it was full contact, and fitness levels were extremely high, the techniques were also very technical and required a lot of skill, unlike what I have seen of Karate which is very direct and uncomplicated. But Ju-Jitsu is brutal, probably the most practical of all of the martial arts. I liked the fact that there was such difference between the variants of Ju-Jitsu, so if you ever got bored you could just change clubs.

Because many of the jjj techniques for stand up involve clinching/closing distance which plays into a bjj practitioners hand. I'm not saying jjj is useless as it's not but given the choice between which art to train it's bjj 100%. I'm saying this as someone who has trained in both

BJ doesn't quite sit well as much as BJJ

If the Gracies called their system "judo," they would not have had a competitive marketing advantage versus the legitimate Kodokan judoka who were teaching in Brazil. If you can give the first generation Gracies credit for something, it's for keeping their system separate from judo. Without the Gracies, judo would have taken over Brazil.

@@RichardBejtlich I don't get your point. The "marketing advantage" is just what makes the Gracies so pathetic and silly. Until 1995, their style was inferior to Judo in all ways. But the spectacle of the first few UFCs made them look superior, when in fact, they would have lost to any high-level judoka at the time. They just made sure that such a matchup never happened. They could have called it Gracie Judo, Brazilian Judo or freestyle Judo. I don't give a horse's ass about their marketing advantage. Either you are being honest or you lie to your own advantage. They keep on lying to this day. And you know what? Judo took over Brazil anyway. Down there, Judo is way more popular than BJJ. In the Western world, people still believe in the Gracie myth.

Why not call it Japanese kudokan judo 🥋

Just so you know in Brazil it was never called brazilian jiu jitsu, it’s always been only jiu-jitsu, but the whole world knows it started in Japan and was modified and popularized in Brazil
