THE HISTORY OF MARY PRINCE by Mary Prince - FULL AudioBook | Greatest AudioBooks - Mary Prince (c. 1788 - after 1833) was a British abolitionist and autobiographer, born in Bermuda, to an enslaved family of African descent. Subsequent to her escape, she was later living in London, England, she wrote The History of Mary Prince (1831), which was the first account of the life of a black woman to be published in the United Kingdom.
Belonging to the genre of slave narratives, this first-hand description of the brutalities of enslavement, released at a time when slavery was still legal in Bermuda and British Caribbean colonies, had a galvanizing effect on the anti-slavery movement. It went through three printings in the first year. Prince had her account transcribed while living and working in England at the home of Thomas Pringle, a founder of the Anti-Slavery Society. She had gone to London with her master and his family in 1828 from Antigua. (Summary adapted from wikipedia)

Beautifully read thank you. This is so hard to listen to, I need to take breaks, but what an important piece of history as seen from Mary's own experience. Unimaginable horror inflicted upon those poor people. I feel so blessed to be where I am in at this point in history.

The outlines for slavery in Exodus are NOT barbarous. Slavery was not a life long institution. If someone chose to stay with a master they could, but it was a choice. Murder, rape, incest, brutality against man and beast are clearly denounced by God in the scriptures. Slave holders of long ago used exerpts from scripture to condone thier kind of slavery. The Bible speaks of slavery in both Hebrew and Greek scriptures. In doing so the treatment of the slave was to be governed by the code of conduct befitting a person who respects Almighty God and obeys Him as ruler over the prevailing attitude of the time period.

I don’t have time to explain to a skeptical fault finder, who believes he is an armchair Bible scholar. Let me just say, Christ changes people from the inside out. He then changed society, through such disciples. That’s why the Christians were the moral voice freeing the slaves. Have you ever heard of a nation freeing people with no power before? And at great cost? We have seen the enemy, and he is us. You shall call Him, Jesus, for He shall save His people from their sins. Not He shall save His people from weakness, poverty and slavery. We are the salt (preservative, healing) of the earth. We are the light (truth, healing) of the world.

I can scarcely believe the scope of man’s inhumanity to his fellow human beings. Even a dumb beast might fare better than these had. A person could even reason that if these dreadful excuses for humanity that “owned” these fellow humans considered them naught but chattel, they might have even considered the price of their replacement and for that reason alone one would think they wouldn’t mistreat “expensive live property,” or however they saw these poor people. The fact that they wouldn’t even do THAT seals in my mind the surety that they were just plain EVIL. If these human beings could only be thought of as low as beasts of labor, a reasonably prudent person wouldn’t work or beat the creature so that it could not labor, and that is just pure evil. It clearly shows they derived some hellish and perverse pleasure out of their beating a poor person nigh to death and working them through it all, it chills my bones! To what end, I ask? Who would have thought that this evil could be so pure that the kindnesses shown by those who had SOME feeling would be longed for by the “owned” people, even though being slaves owned by another was so wrong in the first place? It just goes to show that once you begin a wickedness like owning another human, you however unwittingly open the door to the severe depths of living hell they eventually suffered by others, not laying blame to themselves or seeing the connection between their wrongs and the worse ones that followed. Sad, sad, sad.

I believe that may have been prohibited. I know that the slaves of North America were not allowed to send letters, learn to read and write, or anything having to do with exercising intelligence even if they had been born free and educated before their bondage. They were whipped naked within an inch of their lives for those "offenses". Slave owners were constantly concerned that their slaves would escape.

What kinds of tasks/jobs were slaves forced to do? 4. What kinds of punishments did slaves suffer? 5. Give some examples of infrequent human kindness during Mary's life as a slave? 6. What qualities did Mary possess that allowed her to endure and go on living? 7. What was the difference between British servants and slaves as Mary explained? 8. How might Mary be seen as a true hero in the fight for human liberty and justice?

Such a sad story that i have found hard to listen to because of the anger i feel at it.. but i have to listen to the words that mary must have wanted the world to know. There was no one to save her, no one to stand up for her , no group or support , no law , no legistlation... how anybody couod have survived these times in slavery dumbfounds and upsets me. A future of freedom is still a dream for most, but never have i been physically flogged and owned by people of another race. Good lord i cant believe it even existed. God bless you Mary Prince... i am only at section 2 but my heart might just crack open at any point. I would give anything to have been able to help, like most would. I can only be part of keeping the memory and story of mary and slaves alive. Amen to Jesus

Greg Zeno I don’t know but reading about the horrific journey from Africa across the Atlantic ( that was so terrible many didn’t survive) then landing in a totally foreign environment, starved, beaten & sick.....I believe it had to break them spiritually, physically, mentally & emotionally. This level of abuse was foreign to them.....it is a question so often asked about the German concentration camps where the slaves (Jews) far outnumbered their guards....why did they not rise up, fight back..... they were broken...and in a place where there was no where to run...no reprieve. Me? I don’t know how I would handle it. I think I would rather die fighting for my freedom, for my dignity....but who knows....maybe survival becomes all that matters then...

Africa was not emptied as all there were claimed as slaves. The good fighters stayed in the homeland and were not caught. Too strong and smart. Also, most of the stock for traders were social disrupters who had been voted for exile into slave trade as their tribunals trusted such to be proper punishment for their violations of tribal rules.

I understand your question. I really do. Why? He is God who gives free will to all men, yet He could have stopped this! He could have stopped many atrocities throughout time! I've asked this so many times in genuine indignation! Anger to be truthful! Hard as it may be for us to understand, there is and will be a reckoning for all things! One day, all wrongs will be made right! There is nothing that ever was, is, or will be, that does not hold eternal purpose and value. One day, God will make good on all things and will righteously avenge all ills! Every tear will be wiped away from the eyes of all who belong to Him. He is close to the brokenhearted and He's a big big God who can take our anger and frustration. He will help us to trust Him and His plan, even though we do not understand.
