Today Top Hat Gaming Man looks at the perplexing history of Mike Haggar, a highly important Capcom character who exists within the Street Fighter universe who for some reason has never been playable. In this video we shall be taking an in-depth look at every single one of his appearances in video game history and try to discuss why he is the only major Final Fight character to never appear selectable in Capcom's most famous fighting game.

Did you know that they unintentionally made parody version of Dan Severn and Don Frye with Mike Haggar two guy more known as the pro and Olympic style wrestler martial artists although Don had boxing background on top of his wrestling training

truly the mightiest man in the SF universe...because a man isn't a man simply because of his strength of body, but because of his intellect to be able to run a whole city, and his compassion for other people, demonstrated how he'd drop everything he's doing to help others or even giving someone like Cody a second chance by handing him the seat of Metro City...it is criminal Haggar hasn't made it to SF games yet...

Almost, they are proving very popular, but I have not got the full plan quite yet. As I don't know whether Street Fighter is the draw or biopic style videos. This is why I am pivoting slightly today and using a Final Fight character and next Thursday I am going to try uploading a video on Samus Aran from Metroid.

Didn't want to sound negative, it's just it could get boring and people may get burnt out regarding these types of videos only focusing on fighting games and similar types of games (beat'em ups) Be good to mix it up with history of characters from various franchises and systems from different types of games and genre.

No worries, I look at my channel how I look at the sea and it makes more sense to ride the waves rather than try to fight them. My direction is dictated generally by whatever is proving most popular with the audience. So if I see the masses are getting enjoyment from something, I double down on it and give them more. If you are not enjoying the current content, please be aware that it will not last forever and I evolve based on whatever I identify people are enjoying most in that moment.

There's a Final Fight short starring former MMA fighter Don Frye as Haggar. Guy and Cody do 95% of the fighting, but Haggar's short fight is cool too. There are even a few funny moments.

Haggar is one of my all time favorite video game characters, I always wondered why they never included him in any SF game, and I always thought it was because of the "too similar to Zangief" reason. who knows, maybe they will finally give him his deserved spot in SFVI

Ever notice that Mike Haggar looks a lot like Pops Racer from Speed Racer? Pops was also a Greco Roman Wrestling champ! I always figured they drew inspiration from Pops Racer since he was a character based on an all American style family.

It's certainly a plausible idea. With the Street Fighter universe drawing influence from the likes of Dragon Ball, Fist of The North Star, and JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, you may as well throw some Speed Racer in there for good measure!

@Jesse CR-X, et al, actually, if Mike Haggar draws inspiration from anyone, especially in real life, it is Buford Pusser. Let me see, they are both big burly ex-professional wrestlers, they were both married to women, both men had daughters with their wives, both men fought gangs, both men used weapons on said gangs, and both men fought corruption. The three key differences are that Buford Pusser was actually a sheriff and later tried to run for county mayor before he was assassinated by said gangs due to vehicular sabotage and Mike Haggar was always a mayor and only lost being re-elected because the pantywaists that were in higher political positions than he were having their criminal empires shrivel up and a person that has a lot of money, power, and influence is, more likely than not, corrupt, on the take, and involved heavily into various criminal, and possibly even terrorist, activities in their lives, Mike Haggar was actually a bit bigger than Buford Pusser (Buford Pusser was 6' 6", or 195 cm, tall, and he weighed around 250 lbs., or around 113 kgs, but Mike Haggar was, depending on the source of information, 6' 8", or 200 cm, tall to 6' 10", or around 205 cm, tall, and around 290 lbs, or 132 kgs to 320 lbs, or around 145 kgs), and Buford Pusser lived in a rural area whereas Mike Haggar lived in an urban area. Now looks wise, Mike Haggar does also draw from Ravishing Rick Rude, Don Frye, and Dan "The Beast" Severn (whom actually portrayed him in a fan film), but in the terms of the story, he is definitely drawing a lot of parallels to Buford Pusser.

I see him as another incarnation of Sgt. "Sleepy" John Estes from the manga and anime OVA, MAD BULL 34. The two characters favor each other very much. Perhaps Sleepy is an unknown twin brother to Haggar.

What is perplexing to me is that the legendary Mike Haggar is still yet to appear in a Street Fighter game as a playable character. That's just wrong. Capcom really need to include him in the next DLC for SFV. This is getting ridiculous.

think I read somewhere that he's not been put forward because his move set would be just a copy of Zangiefs.. which is a pretty ridiculous reason not to include him given they have three main characters (Ryu, Ken, Akuma) with near exact same move sets.

Technically, he HAS been playable in a Street Fighter game because you can actually play as Haggar in Street Fighter Zero. He appears as a hidden character along with Dan, Gouki (Akuma) & Vega (M. Bison) by putting in a code on the character select screen. However, it's literally the Final Fight sprite & he only has a few moves & he's only playable in the Japanese version of the game.

Its possible that Haggar lost priority because when he was created in the late 80s muscle bound meatheads were still popular in action western movies. As the 90s drew in, that became less popular in favour of athletic, martial arts type meatheads. Just a thought. Was probably said in the video already.

One of the biggest influences on Mike Haggar is Spillane's hard boiled detective with a moustache "Mike Hammer" Final Fight also has a hard boiled kind of damsel in distress story and the two items found the hammer and the hat are allusions to this influence. Also the name of his finisher in later games "Final Hammer".

Secretly, I think Haggar and Zangief are one in the same person, because anytime Zangief is shown in a game, Haggar isn't in it. And when Zangief isn't in in a game, Haggar is in it. There's even a Haggar Costume for Zangief in one of the games. It doesn't make sense that they both can't be in the game, since you see Yun and Yang as well as Ryu and Ken as well as Charlie and Guile.

The thing about Haggar and Zangief in old SF games is that while his style and special moves are similar to Zangief's he's different enough that would require a lot of new assets like sprites and animations, making Ryu clones was done frequently because it was cheap and fast to do, Haggar wouldn't be because he can't share most of his assets with Zangief. That's why a game that has one of them generally doesn't have the other one, too much work/cost to cover *almost* the same character archetype.

most badass mayor ever!!!(do poison,ibuki,laura or zangief/r. mika next.:3) always loved playing as mike haggar in final fight,how he's in all the series games(like slam masters being what he did before becoming mayor and apparently him and zangief being impressed by each other to influence their moves.) and find it heartwarming how much he becomes a father figure to cody he makes him mayor instead of giving up on him,would love to see haggar in street fighter 6 taking on gill with his old team & the former mad gear gang members. also am i the only one who thought in the anime street fighter 2v chun li's father dorai was kinda like an anime mike haggar as he looks pretty similar if slimmer.

According to multiple official capcom complete works Haggar was around 40 years old and was beginning his campaign as mayor of metro city He was 50 years old on final fight 2 which is 2 or so years after the first game and this is all pre street fighter 1 Also its known that zangief got into professional wrestling because he watched haggar and his famous lariat So by the time of street fighter alpha 2/3 haggar would be like 55 or maybe 60

Final fight was originally going to be the sequel to street fighter but became its own game so then when SF2 came about thought they changed haggar to zangeif For some reason.

The fighting style Mike Hagger does, you see in Zangief does in Street Fighter.

Given that Cody becomes mayor in Street Fighter 5, it would've been perfect for Haggar to be part of Street Fighter 4. After learning of Cody's escape from prison and the threat of S.I.N., Haggar would make it his final fight to enter the tournament and bring Cody back. His main rivals before meeting Seth would be Cody or Zangief. The ending would have Cody running into Haggar once more, possibly after his encounter with Guy. Cody is ready to be taken back to prison, but Haggar reveals that his time as mayor is coming to an end soon and is talking about exonerating Cody so that he can become the next mayor.

would love to see haggar in sf but they’d have to differentiate his move set from zangeif’s. both are pro wrestling grapplers who use a lariat

Guess they didn't need Haggar if they had Zangief. But they also add a hundred characters that play like Ryu. Idk. We need more Haggar!

he's basically Zangief. that's why you don't see him much. It's not an excuse. As early SF games such as II used similar sprites like Mortal Kombat did, to save memory while adding characters. Ryu and Ken function as palette swaps, then, but have since deviated from those similarities. Haggar and Zangief have not deviated at all from their original character types. Zangief and Haggar also come from an era when you didn't really cross over franchises, even if you owned them, with exceptions of background cameo easter eggs. The only way for Haggar/Zangief to work is giving Haggar a complete overhaul to make him different enough now-a-days from Zangief. So it isn't an "excuse," as to imply there is no explanation to satisfy why Haggar isn't in SF. It's a plausible explanation.
