Khazad-dûm, or Moria, was the greatest dwarf kingdom in the history of Middle-earth. Today, we cover it's entire history, from its founding by Durin I, to its reclamation by King Durin VII - long after the Return of the King. It's doors were made by the greatest craftsmen of the Second Age - the dwarf Narvi and the elf lord Celebrimbor. It would rise to incredible heights until the awakening of the Balrog of Morgoth, Durin's Bane.

I had a look and yes all the maps are lovely, but I was hoping there would be a map of middle earth. I didn't expect the maps to be more factual and presumed with a name like "Lord of maps" it would have a middle earth map, but my hopes were a wee bit dashed... and yet they could make so much money. :/

Yup. It is especially strong if you know the backstory of it all. To your average watcher, it is just a badass line. But when you know who is Gimli, from what dwarven line, and what Moria is - it really amplifies the sentence. Khazad-dum is a dwarven kingdom as long as there is one dwarf alive in it, no matter how many enemies he faces - as it is their first and the greatest kingdom, created by literally the first dwarf to ever live. It is like Jerusalem for all three major Abrahamic religions, but to the n-th degree.

There are zero good lines in any of Peter Whoever's movies. They just suck, exactly as Christopher Tolkien said. They capture nothing of what Moria was and what dwarves represented in general. I am ashamed that I've even watched 1+3/4 of them, as I can't bear to watch the rest.

The Moria sequence in LOTR Fellowship of the Ring, directed by Peter Jackson, is my favourite chapter in the whole trilogy. I took my kids to see it back in 2001 - they were blown away. Well done Peter and the hundreds of artisans who created the Moria props, characters and scenery. They truly multiplied the vision of JRR Tolkien. Oh, and the Orthanc confrontation between Gandalf & Saruman was brilliant too.

@@isaackim7675 Though it stirs sorrow, it's this deep and true feeling it makes you mourn his loss and what may have been, that is what MAKES this moment. This character, really can only resound such a wounding note, having struck short someone cared for. Changing it for them all to meet up and be pals after wouldn't have the grand and authentic feel of the books. That's why I feel one of the best details is how Frodo will never be all better again. A part of him has broken from his tasks as ringbearer. So he has to travel with the Elves and Gandalf to the Grey Havens, into the west.
@DaDitka

It also shows real life, that not every story has a happy ending. Whether it is Balin meeting his end in Moria, or Boromir succumbing to the temptation of the One Ring and then dying heroically defending Merry and Pippin, or Denethor going crazy after thinking he lost both of his son's and burning himself alive, or Frodo being seriously hurt by the Nazgul blade, sometimes things happen which we wish wouldn't happen. It is sad, but it's why it is so powerful. Like you guys said, we get attached to the characters, and we mourn their loss when they die unexpectedly or tragically (or, in some cases, heroically).

This reminds me why the Mines of Moria was the Lord of the Rings Online 1st major expansion. I saw the dead Balrog at the top and found Gandalf's hat at the bottom. The map rendered in this video is quite impressive and 'does' dwarf the actual areas available to the player.

If they're ever going to make a TV series, I'd love for them to make an epic saga of the Awakening of Durin the First all the way to the Dwarves creating Khazad-dûm throughout all the ages. They'd never have to worry about actors and actresses getting fed up and wanting to leave because it would span generations so each series would focus on the various ages. Thanks again for all your work on putting these videos together.

And we just hope that the backstories of the main characters and others too as well as the places, the kingdom, etc will be shown episode per episode, the prequels, and genesis. Ohhhh I want to watch again the LOTR trilogy. I will start this week.

Loath to say, but I can't get enough of Tolkien's stories about great tragedies of Middle-earth. The destruction of Beleriand, the Sundering of Numenor, fall of Arnor, decline of Gondor, Dwarves losing their realms - all of this makes LOTR lore *so much* more heartbeaking and interesting. And as always, your continuous effort to compound the history of LOTR from different appendixes and story bits into one single source is greatly appreciated, Nerd of the Rings :)

The world was young, the mountains green, No stain yet on the Moon was seen, No words were laid on stream or stone When Durin woke and walked alone. He named the nameless hills and dells; He drank from yet untasted wells; He stooped and looked in Mirrormere, And saw a crown of stars appear, As gems upon a silver thread, Above the shadows of his head. The world was fair, the mountains tall, In Elder Days before the fall Of mighty kings in Nargothrond And Gondolin, who now beyond The Western Seas have passed away: The world was fair in Durin's Day. A king he was on carven throne In many-pillared halls of stone With golden roof and silver floor, And runes of power upon the door. The light of sun and star and moon In shining lamps of crystal hewn Undimmed by cloud or shade of night There shone for ever fair and bright. There hammer on the anvil smote, There chisel clove, and graver wrote; There forged was blade, and bound was hilt; The delver mined, the mason built. There beryl, pearl, and opal pale, And metal wrought like fishes' mail, Buckler and corslet, axe and sword, And shining spears were laid in hoard. Unwearied then were Durin's folk; Beneath the mountains music woke: The harpers harped, the minstrels sang, And at the gates the trumpets rang. The world is grey, the mountains old, The forge's fire is ashen-cold; No harp is wrung, no hammer falls: The darkness dwells in Durin's halls; The shadow lies upon his tomb In Moria, in Khazad-dûm. But still the sunken stars appear In dark and windless Mirrormere; There lies his crown in water deep, Till Durin wakes again from sleep.

One thing I've always wondered: Given the enormous volume of halls and chambers, stairways and mine workings, what did the Dwarves do with all the spoil? It is a bit of a tricky topic. I had to do some digging to come up with the best possible explanation. Basically, it was always called Moria by certain elves, but its common name didn't become Moria until after the balrog had taken over. That's the best explanation I've found anyway. You'd think the dwarves would've been like "hold up, you are not putting 'Black Pit' on our front door!"
@dw1419
@dw1419 2 жыл бұрын
The simplest solution is that Moria was always the Sindarin name for the place (most elves generally not preferring to live underground in darkness), but it became the predominant one once the dwarves were driven out. The dwarves also keep using the name Moria afterward, seeming to indicate they don't find it overly negative or insulting.

Well, that is how it was in the film. IIRC, from the books we know just that it was very narrow - I don't think that side guards are mentioned, but they are implied. In essence, it was a standard bridge, just narrow to the point where two warriors could not stand and fight side by side - meaning a narrowest of carts might pass through with a pony (economy and all that) and that's it. Film version was made as such for dramatic effect. As were many segments throughout the films, Isengard being one good example for the architecture, and Eomer's charge at the Battle of Helm's Deep being another (in the books, Gandalf charges with Erkenbrand and 1000 infantry that scattered after the Second battle of the Fords of Isen - not with Eomer and thousands of cavalry).

@Wustenfuchs109
@Wustenfuchs109 2 жыл бұрын
@@republic0_032 In general terms, yes - but in the books, the tower is described as smooth black stone, seamless, like it is one huge chunk. In the films, it has a lot of exterior details. Also, Isengard's ring is supposed to be natural rock formation, molded and adjusted. In the films, it is clearly been built out of bricks. Nothing wrong with the film version - it is just a creative liberty they took. It does not affect the story and the feel. Which was my point - in films they took liberties like that where they could - in order to give us a more awesome world. Like the bridge of Khazad Dum, which is not THAT narrow - but is simply an awesome scene in the films. Or, how the lowermost wall of Minas Tirith is made of mysterious black stone (like the Orthanc in Isengard) but in the films, for the added visual effect of the White City, all walls are shining white against the coming darkness. Inaccuracies like that are OK in my opinion. Details, that don't change the story that much but are a personal input of the people who adapted the book. Even though one could argue that the black wall of Minas Tirith is important as it ties it to the ancient masonry and craft of the ancient Numenor. But, as Numenor and the entire legendarium are not the topic of the film, that detail can be omitted for the better representation of the story that the IS the topic of the film, hence the entire city is bright white. It is not a critique :)
