Produced by Naropa University & Flatirons Films. Music by Max DeVincenzo. A renowned Tibetan Buddhist, Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche, founded Naropa University in 1974. His vision was to take the very best elements of western scholarship and combine them with an emphasis on eastern wisdom tradition to reinvent education in the United States. Learn more at www.naropa.edu.
Eastern Wisdom and Buddhism is expressed at Naropa today as Contemplative Education. Contemplative Education combines three educational pedagogies-Traditional Academics, Experiential Learning, and Contemplative Practice-to form a unique and innovative approach to higher education that truly does take the best of western scholarship with the best of eastern wisdom.
The two "western" pedagogies; Traditional Academics and Experiential Learning, as well as the more traditionally eastern pedagogy of Contemplation Practice are expressed as the "three areas of inquiry," which are, in turn, rooted in the Three Prajnas of Buddhism, or the three ways of knowing: study, reflection, and meditation.
The fields of study we offer reflect this combination of East and West and are an expression of our mission and values. Our focus is on psychology, education, leadership, religious studies and the arts. Naropa is committed to inspiring students to engage courageously with a complex and challenging world and innovate, lead, create and serve.

Does anyone know here to find the original video of ram dass and chogyam together? It seems to have been taken down from KZfaq.

I was there . Naropa Institute was all they claim it to be . The quest to become Naropa University killed it .

@@alisyarazman The Institute was spontaneous , free-wheeling . Crazy Wisdom was a practice , not just a phrase . It canall be summed up : There was a guy named Dennis , a local mystic with a tattoo of Buddha on his head . In the early days Dennis would always hang out at Sacred Heart School ( Naropa rented it for the Summer ) or on the steps when Naropa moved to 1111 Pearl St. ; he never wore a shirt . Most peaceful person you ever met . One day after Naropa moved to Arapaho Ave , not long after they got accreditation ( to be not an Institute , anyone can be an Institute ) but a University , he was sitting out front on the steps , meditating , like he had done every day for almost a decade : they called the Cops on him for not wearing a shirt . Things like THAT are why Naropa went for a prolonged visit to the Hell Realm .

@@durangomcmurphy1529 thx for sharing this info. Do you believe money/accreditation led to a change in the schools’ open-ness?

@@JimzAuto Of course , the bottom line was & is money . I knew & hung out with , Ginsberg & the poets . An enraged Gregory Corso , on a KGNU radio interview , famously said to what today would be called a " woke " host , " Don't tell a poet what to say ! " . That sums it up . Naropa became terrified of what the West brought to the " East meets West " equation , FREEDOM . They thought a freewheelin' Kerouac inspired Institute would cost them Grant money & accreditation , so they clamped down on parties , ect , which were the REAL lifeblood of the zeitgeist . Classes were almost non-existent , the parties at Varsity Townhouse and other places , were the equivalent of the Cafe's in Paris in the 1930's . Freedom was replaced with control . Naropa of 1975 was Bob Dylan ..the last time I was there around 2015 , it was Barry Manilow .

Me. Not a fan of cool and trendy pretty white "alternative" kids who do cool and trendy pretty white "alternative" things in their cool and trendy pretty white "alternative" town. Not a fan of psycho babbling new-age idiots. Not a fan of bland, homogeneous and conformist Boulder; the master race cult community with the suffocating herd mentality. BTW, I've taken classes at Naropa.
