Why is the NFL so horrible at telling the history of their sport? Professional football started way before 1920. The first "professional football" game was in 1892. Played in the Allegany County / Pittsburgh area, when William "Pudge" Heffelfinger signed a $500 contract to play in a game for the Allegheny Athletic Association, against the Pittsburgh Athletic Club. There is 30 years of great players and team history well before the 1920 APFA arrived .... and there's even more history if they include all of the great college teams that dominated the sport in the late 1800's.
