At one point, ROBLOX was almost entirely built out of stolen clipart. This is the story behind those assets, and how they slowly evolved out of this stage.

Watched this back again, and would like to make a small correction. The Silk icons used in Roblox Studio from early 2007 to 2022 *were* used with credit. However, as far as I know, the credit was completely removed from Studio, a few years later. Before that, in 2006, Roblox Studio used default Windows 95 icons.

The only reason Roblox used to be so careless about reusing assets is probably because yes they created the game hoping for a playerbase but they never expected it to grow so exponentially. So by the time it already had, the stuff they stole became most integral to their game than it ever was even towards the source material they were “borrowing” from.
@gianni50725
@gianni50725 Жыл бұрын
That's not even true considering they had hundreds of thousands of players and still ignored the stolen assets. It's not like Roblox was totally unknown in 2008 (there were over 1 million players), it had more players than most online games ever had. See here: 8:38 they had over 100,000 players by this point.

@@gianni50725 Well, I'd have to agree with OP. I found the game in late 2006 and joined in 2007. I always thought the game would shut down eventually. It was a small project compared to what it is now, indie projects weren't expected to survive for long and the trailer sucked. They also had competition from Blockland. Nobody expected it to be so huge. I vaguely remember playing in 2008-09, but the community still seemed small then. You had more freedom to do what you wanted, and I used to get hit by other players in most servers I went to, so my character died constantly. I liked watching Roblox blooper videos on KZfaq, as well. I went on a ton of MMOGs (over 200), including virtual worlds and MMORPGs... 1 million players meant nothing compared to the gigantic playerbases of Western and Asian MMORPGs, or even virtual worlds like Habbo Hotel. If I didn't play something, I'm at least aware of it. Besides, I think that in 2008, there were 1 million accounts registered, not concurrent players.

I'll just make a correction regarding the Oof sound. It actually wasn't removed immediately when Tommy Tallarico found out about it in early 2020, they managed to come to an agreement during that time that allowed ROBLOX to continue using the Oof sound. However Tommy Tallarico in mid 2022, presumably due to financial troubles he ran into while developing the Intellivision Amico (which has often been described as a scam), likely demanded even more money from ROBLOX to allow them to continue using the Oof sound, which they refused to accept and instead created a new Oof sound.

Stolen and credited or not what with how small Roblox was, I still love the old assets and sound effects from the earlier days of the internet, still has a charm of the mishmash of random internet stuff in the developing engine at the time like it was supposed to be a 3D engine art project only to turn into mainstream because the appeal certainly was felt by kids more and more by the years now to be buried in obbies, tycoons and simulators.

I found out about Roblox around late 2006 or early 2007. I was a kid at the time. Roblox was a VERY indie game, something that was considered negative back then. The original trailer didn't look promising at all, and it took me ages to finally try it out. I thought it wasn't going to last. I remember I discovered Blockland around the same time, but that one was always shareware. I tested it only a few times. It doesn't surprise me that Roblox's developers stole assets, including the "oof" sound from Messiah. The game was relatively unknown in its early years (compared to other popular MMOGs with 10 million users+) and they had little budget to make their own content, so they didn't care about copyright infringement. I believe that in 2008 they had 1 million sign-ups, not concurrent players. Early Roblox was better, in my opinion. Very anarchic and fun, even though I'd die in 10 seconds because everyone attacked me. 😂 I used to love watching videos by Fleskhjerta and JJx15 (or whatever he was called).

What's more interesting is that there is a channel (Roblox Gear Sounds) that puts videos of gear sound effects and I got to say, my favorite sound if the Boo sound effect from the soccer ball gear.

I mean.. the internet was a huge place with a lot of stuff floating around back then. I couldn't entirely blame them for doing this; I know young me ripped assets from everywhere all the time to accomplish things because copyright isn't always so obvious when you're first on the internet lol. Good history stuff tho.

i really wish i could go back in time and play roblox again. i played 2013(as a guest) and in 2014-present day. 2014-2016 had a lot of really fun and good games. and ik this is a common complaint, but im really tired of simulator/pet collector games. its hard to find smth fun without being recommended it by someone else or tiktok bc the discovery page is awful.

Not to mention, the pumpkin bomb laughing sound effect comes from the horror character Chucky, and his laugh has continued to be used all over Roblox and is mostly used as a clown laugh.

iirc roblox only had a limited selection of music you could put in your places for a time, all if not most of these were stolen from other games or media. A highlight from me is that the song "tunnel" on roblox was taken directly from the rhythm game DJMax Trilogy. The song's original title is Zet, made by Bexter.
