When I ride Spaceship Earth nowadays, I listen to the Walter Cronkite narration audio to match up to the ride. Instead of partaking in the interactive part on the descent, I'm listening to Tomorrow's Child and looking up at the triangular screens on the ceiling imagining that they're lit up.

I remember the version with Jeremy Irons and remembered being super annoyed when they changed it. Because I loved the part where it showed the Boy and girl talking to each other through the computer. The idea of people talking to each other in different sides of the world just amazed me. Although I do applaud that they added the development of the PC. That was a much needed addition.

As someone who has been to Epcot many many times, I actually remember the change from the Jeremy Irons version to the next version. Although the current version is very good, they should've kept Jeremy Irons as narrator.

Last time we went on it the ride had an emergency shutdown, stopped for about 10 minutes. We were at the very top with the projection of Earth on the ceiling. I took some pictures with my camera with the flash of a dark area in front of us. There is an entire maintiance workshop up there! Tools, torches, welding machines and all. A really cool discovery in an otherwise unpleasant situation.

OMG I almost forgot about the "Tomorrow's Child" song at the end! I also remember the old theme that used to play in the outer space section at the top, and it's still engrained in my memory. I remember when the Roman Empire section had a tiny projection of a chariot turning a corner and riding off in the distance. It has since been removed or no longer in use. I always get a kick out of seeing the female scientist with the Afro in the computer section. I call her "Dr. Foxy Brown"! lol

So, funny story time. When I took my trip to Disney World around... I wanna say 2011/2012, my dad, my brother and I went to Epcot. It was pouring almost all day, so I can attest to the rain thing with Spaceship Earth first hand. When we made our way inside and got into the ride, my dad and younger brother took the cart in front of me. My brother isn't much younger than me (I was around 14 at the time), but my dad is known to have spells of mischief that can infuriate my brother. Unfortunately, one of those happened during the start of the ride. As shown in the video, the ride initially asks what language you speak. This is the language set to play through the speakers through the entire ride and, as my dad found out, cannot be changed once selected. If you hit English, like I did, you hear English coming through the speakers the whole way, no chance to change it. My dumbass dad chose Spanish. Thinking there would be an "Are you sure" option, he thought it would be funny to trick my brother. My brother nearly threw a fit, and I had to play translator the entire ride by basically relaying what was coming through my speaker to them the whole time. I loved the ride but it was bothersome to have to keep leaning forward to tell my brother and dad what was going on. Thankfully, my dad didn't try anymore stunts like that the whole trip. This was, after all, after he told us we wouldn't need any ponchos for the whole day he was CERTAIN would not be raining the whole day. If we hadn't begged him to buy that tiny umbrella we would have been drenched from sunrise to sunset. TL;DR: Don't ride Spaceship Earth with an asshole dad onboard.

He didn't just write the script, he conceived the ride completely. In his biography and some other essays, he talks about walking into a room of Imagineers, laying out a description of what was in his mind, leaving, then coming back the next day to a variety of models. He would then say "Oh God, yes this is it" or no.

I honeymooned at EPCOT in July 1983. What annoyed me the most is that the phrase "Spaceship Earth" was coined by futurist/inventor Buckminster Fuller, whose geodesic dome was the structure used at EXPO 67 as well as for the construction of EPCOT's Spaceship Earth. I visited EPCOT's customer information center during my honeymoon trip and was given a brochure about the construction of Spaceship Earth that did mention Buckminster Fuller having been consulted during its design. However... Bucky Fuller didn't just coin the term "Spaceship Earth". He wrote a seminal book in the late 1960s... "Operating Manual for Spaceship Earth" which (by telling the history and potential of scientific advancement) offers a roadmap for achieving the "world of hope and prosperity for all" that the CEO of Disney can be heard talking about in your video of the park's opening day ceremony. I asked the customer information center staff why Bucky's book was not sold in the book store part of the gift shop people visit after exiting the Spaceship Earth ride. I received (as I recall it) an "I have no idea" answer. To be honest, this is one of the great mysteries of the Disney culture post-Walt's life. Walt Disney worked with leading edge rocket scientist Wernher von Braun in 1955 to create three TV specials that taught the America people that space travel was no longer science fiction... that we now had the technology to go into space for real. (Search on "Disney Man Into Space" to find the episodes of the Wonderful World of Disney). But the Disney organization of the 1980s and since failed to partner with Buckminster Fuller (even after using his phrase) or any of the scientists he inspired to see the potential for true world peace. Here in 2020, it may be time to ask this question again. Thank you for your excellent historical video... and for jogging my memory about what Disney could have done (and maybe still can do).

I am a Pisces through to my core and my ex is a Leo also through to his core. It is a cosmic coincidence that we are both on this list and I must say I agree with each sign’s explanation as to why they’re unforgettable. I will also solemnly say that it is painfully true as I find myself remembering him almost daily. We were in each other’s lives for years and it has left a void in me that can’t be filled or stitched back together but I am the kind of Pisces that if he is very badly hurt by someone will completely disconnect from that person and make-believe that they never even met. Call it a coping mechanism but I have done this my entire life. It’s like staying “friends” just made the fact that we were no longer together THAT MUCH MORE real and I just couldn’t/can’t deal with that. So I live on with pain and even though there is a void in me that I have to endure I have slowly but surely grown from the experience and emotionally I am no longer a complete wreck. I still believe in love.

Man... I'm watching more and more of your videos, and enjoying every single one of them... I am going to correct you on two points in this one. 1: There was not a disagreement as to the direction of the park. There was really no plan at all for Epcot anymore once Walt passed away. They had plans for two separate parks, one with a futuristic theme and one with an international theme. These two were legitimately going to be two separate parks before Marty Sklar and one other Imagineer decided to push the models together. This is why Epcot is about twice as large as Magic Kingdom (Since opening in 1971, Magic Kingdom was always intended to be the largest park with the most to do, as it was seen as the main attraction of the property). It was an absolute coincidence that the edges where they joined the models together happened to line up almost perfectly. They merged the two models with a river, where the resin that symbolized the water hid the joint line between the models. That river eventually ballooned into the lake that's there now when the sink hole formed between Communicore and World of Motion. Considering the themes of these two parks, and Walt's plan for the future, they decided to call it EPCOT Center, as a tribute to the ideals of Walt's idea. 2: Yes, a lot of the rain water collected by Spaceship Earth is drained directly into the World Showcase Lagoon. However, a majority of it is either heated up or cooled down depending on the atmospheric temperature (I believe 72°F is the threshold) and used as part of the park's air conditioning system. After the ideal temperature is reached, the water flows through a pipe network that runs through all of the buildings at Epcot, controlling the temperature inside the buildings, before finally draining into the lagoon. During droughts, the process can be reversed, taking water from the lagoon to use for the climate control system.

What I find really bizarre is that no video of the original 1982 to 1986 version of the ride seems to exist. (A soundtrack does exist which is on one of MartinVids uploads with still photos of the ride at that time). It's surprising because there's plenty of video footage from that time of other rides in the park and of people walking around the park between 1982 and 1986.

perhaps because personal cameras like the VHS ones hadn't hit the market yet?
@ajs41

No because there's plenty of video footage of other parts of the park. For example there's a video of the EPCOT monorail in 1984. Maybe it's because the cameras didn't work very well in the dark at that time and it is a very dark ride for the most part. Here's the 1984 monorail video: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/Z9ymoMle37WodKc.html Here's EPCOT in 1983: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/p8p_m7xh1c69cqs.html

I wish Walt had lived long enough to see Walt Disney World through. The original EPCOT could have been a true marvel with who-knows-what technological advancements. Instead we got the most boring and dated park at WDW.

Narrator's speech defect of glottal-stop "T" sound made in the back of the throat instead of the front of the mouth, is very disappointing and irritating. It sounds lazy and uneducated. Instead of "mountain", it is "mou ' un". Really?

I apologise for my accent sounding lazy and uneducated and the disappointment I have caused you because of it! I hope you can forgive me for my lack of being able to speak 100 percent correctly in my own videos. Thanks! ;)
