I would have liked a real restoration with the total assembly of the old and new stones in order to have a new parthenon

Hi there! I can totally understand your point about the restoration. I’d love to see them be able to salvage as many relics & stones as possible and be able to create something new “in the style of” that looks like the original structures; but so many structures have been here over time, it would be hard to say what that would even look like. I think this is for sure a topic that has so many dimensions and cultures & religions that have impacted what we have left today, that there probably is no way for this project to be done without displeasing some. It’s certainly fascinating though! Thank you so much for watching & commenting! I enjoy hearing other peoples’ opinions on the topic 🩵🩵🩵

I really enjoyed your narration and choice of historical information, Jules. I never knew about the other religions occupying the Parthenon. Very enlightening. Guess if I had to vote…While I’m open to debate, I’m actually glad the current restoration is trying to restore it to a more original appearance. That’s what the architects envisioned. The ‘rest’ can build their own temple. Sometimes, too many chefs ruin a dish. Thanks for the great video!

Hi again, David! Yes, just like you, I had no idea how little I actually knew about the Acropolis before we went last summer. It's just amazing how so many 1,000's of years of human history can involve so many twists & turns in the story. The more I learned about the restoration project, the less I knew what to think and I'm glad I'm not a person who has to cast a vote on the matter. So many different people & cultures involved here, how could any one decision be the right one, I guess? It was a very fascinating study and I'm so glad you enjoyed watching the video. Thank you so much for watching & commenting! I'm so glad you've found our channel! :)

Metopes / me-to-PE:Z/. These are panels between the “ triglyphs” in a frieze. The triglyphs were memetic representations in marble of the milled wooden beam ends that supported the roofs of older wooden temples. The metopes were panels, often sculpted with historical or mythological scenes in the spaces between the triglyphs. Pronunciation note: you may know other Greek words which end in a single “e” that has a long “e” sound. These are the only words in English that do this: recipe, catastrophe, apostrophe, calliope, metope. There may be others I don’t remember.

There will always be complainers. The sidewalks are necessary for tourism at $22 a pop, which is financing the restoration of the buildings. Can't wait to see the Parthenon rebuilt. Please do NOT sign this troublemakers petition. Let the restoration continue as planned.

Hi there! We appreciate you watching and commenting thoughtfully. We have not signed any petition ourselves, as we do not feel entitled to have an opinion in this restoration project since we are not living in Greece or have any Greek heritage. It's unfortunate that this restorative project has sparked so much controversy and upset so many different cultures, and the issue is very complex. We agree with you that we can't wait to see the final restoration and truly hope it is done as skillfully and beautifully as possible with as much honor paid to the complicated history of this amazing place as possible. 💙🤍💙

The poured concrete is removable. it's placed in squares on plastic. it can be removed without damaging underneath. ironically, the stone it's on that people think is ancient is actually from the 1950s but has been worn away by the millions of tourists to look ancient. Everything on the acropolis is reversible, removable and replaceable

I have visited the Acropolis of Athens many times and enjoyed your video. However, I was disappointed when you commented about the effort to "decolonize" the Acropolis to reflect other cultures and religions that had conquered Greece and modified the buildings of the Acropolis. The monuments reflect the time they were built. The current effort to restore the monuments to their original 5th Century BCE design, aside from the controversy about the concrete, is, in fact, an effort to decolonize them. The Mycenean temples and Archaic temples were destroyed by invaders long ago, and the Greeks themselves rebuilt them as a tribute to their gods, civilization, and even democracy. The 5th-century monuments of the Acropolis were built after citizens voted to build them, not because a king or a tyrant decreed it. Christians and Muslims later partially destroyed the Parthenon in war and converted it into a church and a mosque, defiling and stealing sacred sculptures. The temples on the Acropolis are dedicated to the Olympian Gods, primarily Athena. Even today, there are practitioners of Hellenism, a polytheistic religion dedicated to the worship of the ancient gods. The Greek Orthodox church is very powerful, but Hellenists are increasing in number, and a court in Athens officially recognized the religion in 2006. All that said, it stands to reason that what is left of the monuments should be restored as best as possible according to their architectural plans to honor the Greeks who built them, not the cultures and conquerors who came after them and ruined them. It wouldn't be acceptable to turn a sacred Catholic Church or Mosque into a pagan temple. And it's inaccurate to say that Greece needs to be "decolonized" to reflect modern times. Athens is a modern-day city filled with churches, mosques, offices, apartments, museums, and 21st-century problems. Without the ingenious people who worshipped ancient Greek gods and came up with a concept called democracy, we wouldn't be having this discussion today. They deserve to be honored, not diminished.

Hi Bradley! I'm very glad that you enjoyed this video, and I really enjoyed reading and learning so much from your comment. I tried very hard to make it clear in the video, (and I apologize if it was not clear enough), that I don't personally hold an opinion on what is being done with the Acropolis restoration project. As an American, with no Greek heritage, and as an uninformed tourist who only found out about the restoration controversy on a vacation to Greece last summer, I just don't feel like I have the right to personally take a stance on what "should" or "should not" be done with the restoration efforts. The more I educated myself in the making of this video, the more I realized this is a deep issue that branches out and affects many different cultures in many different ways, and I feel sympathetic for all sides of this story and recognize that there is no way to perform this restoration without deeply offending. I hope I presented what I learned accurately and without historical mistakes.. it was quite a deep dive. You do make a really good point, comparing this project to restoring a Catholic Church or Mosque into a pagan temple and how that would be received by the public. Is there a forum or board that you follow that I could read to stay further informed?
@bradleyjones7780

@@michaelandjulie Hi Julie! I'm also American and can't speak for Greeks (ancient or modern), and it's up to them to decide how to honor their ancient ancestors. I do believe we can't judge the people of the past by modern-day values, such as they are. We should honor their achievements, which you clearly have tried to do in your video. I think our modern Western culture, which is widely acknowledged owes so much to Ancient Greece, seems familiar in a way to us because of a familiarity of Greek mythology in pop culture; it's quite possible to forget that this was the real religion of the time for the ancient Greeks, not Christianity. Their religion was just as important to them as religions are to people today and was later honored by the Romans, who, as you know, conquered Greece but adopted and adapted their culture and religion to a great extent. My feeling is the monuments that remain in various states of disrepair reflect the democratic and religious values of the people who created them and who were incredibly imaginative and gifted. People who conquered Greece after the Romans didn't respect their culture and converted it to their own purposes and religions, so it's hard to understand why the ruins should be restored in any state other than what was originally intended, given that the older ruins were destroyed before the 5th-century BCE buildings. Just my thoughts... The modern-day practice of Greek religion is sometimes referred to as Hellenism, and there are groups on Facebook and forms on Reddit. This site is a good source of info on the ancient Greek gods and religion: www.theoi.com. I found this article from 2018 on modern-day Hellenism by a Greek writer: theoutline.com/post/2843/hellenism-legalized-greece?

Hi Bradley! I am reading the 2nd link that you sent me right now, and I appreciate it, because there is so much of Greek history that I don't know about, as it spans so many hundreds/thousand plus years. You're right that we reflect so much of our modern Western culture from Ancient Greek culture, I felt like I was seeing signs of that all over Greece on our trip, and that surprised me but made me feel so much more connected to their culture than I expected to. Incidentally, my best friend at the time was on a trip to Italy with her fiancé at the same time we were in Greece, and she was telling me about all the Greek artifacts she was seeing in Rome that we SHOULD have been seeing in Greece. That was for sure disheartening. I really don't know what the "right" answer is here in this situation, but I do agree with you that to restore signs of the times when the beautiful Greek history was conquered and damaged or destroyed and therefore honor it does feel like an insult. We were talking about this the last time we visited our best friends, how today's values and morality has shaped how we look at the past, and how we take on guilt for things we had no control over, and how we try to placate all sides of situations where there was a clear victor and a clear sufferer. It's so strange that as humans we have evolved such a conscience and affection for those who have gone before us, and how we look backwards so sentimentally instead of forwards, as they most likely did. I truly enjoy your comments and you make very valid points.

@@michaelandjulie No worries, I ended up speeding up the footage, which made everything more smooth, although it came at the cost of turning your voice into a chipmunk's! Anyway, it looks like you slowed down the footage in post? I have zero experience editing video, but maybe there's a setting in the app you use to smooth out slow-mo footage in a way that's compatible with KZfaq? It was some beautiful footage you caught, so I'll definitely be coming back again for more. Good luck with your channel!

Hi Azin! Julie here again. I did slow the footage down just a smidge in post thinking it would help the shakiness, and now I'm wondering if that might have been a mistake haha. Especially if you had to speed it back up and then listen to my chipmunk voice! I don't know how to edit in such a way that if you increase the playback speed, my voice wouldn't change like that. However, I realize I'm not the best with editing and have a lot to learn. I really appreciate your willingness to work with what I posted and find a way to watch it anyway, and most of all I appreciate the kind constructive criticism. Why are you pronouncing the word 'ancient' like that? Do you have a speech impediment? Also, the whole thing about the concrete on the acropolis is bullshit propaganda from the political opposition of the ruling party. They're scraping the barrel of topics to "call out" the government. It's there for people to appreciate the monuments without getting hurt. Before that, 12 people a DAY, slipped, fell and got injured. If you're going to make an opinionated video, at least show both sides of the coin.

Hello, George! I am not sure how I am mispronouncing the word "ancient," as I've never been told before that I don't say it correctly. I do not have a speech impediment. In this video, I stated that I do not have a person opinion on the topic of the Acropolis Restoration project. As I do not live in Greece or have any known Greek ancestry, I don't think this is a fight I am entitled to hold an opinion on. I only learned about the controversy after visiting the Acropolis last summer and was intrigued that there was so much contention around the restoration project, and I attempted to learn more about it and present it in a video. I do appreciate that you watched my video and left some feedback.

@@michaelandjulie Hi. I apologise for the speech impediment comment. It was unnecessary. I just got the impression when I watched the video that I you were pronouncing it kind of funny. As for the Acropolis issue, I got triggered because there is a lot of toxic public discourse about literally everything (including unfortunately a cement path on the Acropolis) and I just feel there is no need to add fire to the flame so to speak. Trust me when I say, it was done after extensive planning and with only good intentions in mind. Otherwise great video. Cheers.
