English narrated with Dutch subtitles.
The original video film from 1999 was damaged. Only 90 procent of it could be captured.
So this KZfaq video starts somewhere within the beginning of the film.
Source: Dutch EO ( Evangelische Omroep ) early 1999.
Playlists: School-TV and Forbidden Science.
Catagory: Science and Technology.

An RAF Nimrod MR2 from 42 (Torpedo Bomber) Sqn. achieved the highest “Assisted Kills” & the crew subsequently awarded the Arthur Barratt Memorial Award for Aviation Professionalism. This crew also managed to escape a Mig pursuit. Only hours later a US SF C130 was shot down in the exact same area. Point being that for such large aircraft, MPAs operated in what the UK MOD called “a high air threat environment”. What is not known is that this crew also detected an Iraqi “suitcase radar” being used onboard 2 hijacked merchant vessels. Both ships were still moored to their sea jetties. The Iraqis were using them to “spot” Coalition Forces. Both vessels were subsequently sunk. In addition, Vector Assisted Attacks were provided during severe thunderstorm activity with one aircraft subsequently being grounded pending engineering investigation due high G meter readings. Some of the crew donned their Quick Don ditching suits, all wore their Life Jackets fully expecting to have to ditch at some point during the attacks.

There's a tragic depth of truth in that Fred. The RAF & MoD were repeatedly warned the flaws in the Nimrod's Arial refueling system had the potential to fail catestrophically. And then when that finally, inevitably happened there was a serious attempt to blame the flight crews rather than admit they knew the risk and opted for a 'full ahead (with a stiffly moustached) upper lip and damn the torpedoes' mindset. They did *exactly* the same thing when under-equiped Chinnooks crashed too. They are utterly ruthless and shameless in their arse-covering antics.

Forgot to add: In his summing up of the fate of the Nimrod which exploded near Kandahar Afghanistan in 2006, caused by fuel leaking from flawed reception tanks, into thebomb bay where, contacting hot electronics it began to burn: On 23 May 2008 the assistant deputy coroner for Oxfordshire, Andrew Walker, handed down a narrative ruling that it had "never been airworthy from the first time it was released to the service nearly 40 years ago". It was not until AFTER a similar fire in aother Nimrod in 2007 that they were grounded .......... With the intention of reconditioning and updating the design as the MR4A variant! Fortunately, the increasingly hostile press reports and a growing sense of public disquiet led to that plan being shelved. The video here has had quite a large bucket of white-wash tipped over it.

My understanding as to why the Comet failed against the Boeing 707 and then the DC-8 was the British belief that jet travel could only be afforded by the wealthy elite and consequently built the comet with limited seating. The 707 and DC-8 could carry about twice the passengers at reduced cost and opened air travel to the middle class and millions of customers. The Nimrod is a homely plane with an ugly tail and odd nose. The Nimrod AEW-3 was hideous.

You are both exactly INCORRECT. It failed because it had square-ish windows which caused cracks, which caused crashes, which caused development delays, which allowed others to overtake.

Look it up, Roy. Nimrod was a god of hunting. We all make the same mistake these days.

The Nimrod was a superb maritime reconnaissance aircraft, arguably the most capable ever built.

Evidence? Excellent range and transit speed, with good loiter and air to air refuelling capability. ASW and ASuW search capability up there with the best. Huge weapons bay for sonar buoys, torpedoes, anti-ship missiles or life-saving kit (all carried internally). ESM and electro-optical survellance capability. There may have been better options for coastal work but the Nimrod was exactly what the UK needed to cover it's area of operations in the North and South Atlantic.
