Another day, another Overground Line. This is a brief History of the North London Line (NLL). From the early beginnings of the line to Woolwich to being used by the London Overground. It is now a critical route for North London.

The best overground line, my parents always tell me how back in the day they used to call it the magic train or something like that because not many people knew about it as it was not on the tube map and everyone would freeload on it anyway.

Although I can't remember between which years, it *did* appear on the Tube map for a good while, appearing as white with black outlines. It was the route from Broad Street to Richmond, before reversion to North Woolwich.

Excellent piece, packing in a lot of information. I confess I've never really got to grips with the NLL's full history, so this this does the job clearly and concisely. I remember travelling on it way back in the mid to late 1970s... in its "urban backwater" days!

Thanks for the detailed video, used to be very familiar with the NLL back in the day. My Grandfather was a Railway policeman based at Broad St between 1920 & 1951 and my Father was a signalman who worked most of the boxes between Dalston Junction and Camden Road between 1950 & 1985. In the 70's I regularly caught the Watford train at Highbury to Stonebridge Park, for the return journey I would usually have to change at Willesden Junction.

That's a very impressive piece of work Ashley. Easily the best explanation I have seen on the NLL.

The north london line north woolwich - Richmond started as a through route in 1985 when the line was electrified and services diverted away from broad street which closed in 1986

The section between Victoria park and bow was not replaced by the A12 or A102 as it was before being renumbered, the road was built roughly alongside. A large metal bridge was built for the road to pass under the railway at hackney wick. This section of line was closed a few years later and parts of the trackbed have been built upon.

You’ve done a great job of the research, and of the presentation. I regarded the line as a rather slow alternative to the underground and used by those in the know. You certainly got a different view of London from the carriage window!

Maybe TfL, London Overground and Network Rail could reopen Primrose Hill station and to allow London Overground to operate the new Stratford-Watford Junction via Willesden Junction (low level) service. With using Class 378 and Class 710 dual voltage trains and changing voltage at Primrose Hill. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Primrose_Hill_railway_station

Great video, your use of animation is very helpful. Silverlink wasn't the start of the Richmond to North Woolwich route, which started in 1985 when Broad Street station and the line to Dalston Junction was closed, and Richmond to Broad Street services were diverted to North Woolwich instead, with that section now electrified. The service was pretty poor before TfL took it over, shorter trains and lower frequency.
@lfewell2161

1985 was when the electric service started, for a few years prior to that a 2 car diesel service ran between Camden road and North Woolwich.

Great video, as always! Though I think the London Overground should be broken up into individual lines on the Tube Map. I'm thinking: -The North London Line (Richmond/Clapham Junction to Stratford) -The South London Line (Clapham Junction/Battersea Park to Highbury and Islington) -The Goblin Line (Gospel Oak to Barking) -The remaining North/South Overground Lines could then be incorporated into new Crossrail Projects to give London a proper RER / S-Bhan style railway.

8:11 Crossrail has two routes to Liverpool - a new tunnel from Stratford from Pudding Mill Lane (hence the station/track move) which continues through the Central London route and along the current Greater Anglia tracks to terminate at Stratford. It does not go via Bow Road as your map suggests.

There is still (I think) a link between Canonbury and Finsbury Park; back in the 2970s there used to be commuter trains from Broad Street using this; now it's presumably for freight; passengers can transfer at Highbury & Islington to connect between the North London and Great Northern lines.

Efforts at branding it as the North London Line and encouraging usage as an alternative to going in and out of central London began way before NSE. For example here's a poster from 1972. www.flickr.com/photos/21602076@N05/50023290576/in/dateposted/
