I remember there was also one during Arroyo by Dec. 2009, after the Maguindanao Massacre. And it was strictly bound to the Maguindanao province. Safe to say, the Martial Law provision still exists, but it really does require the direst of instances before it is implemented.

However, both Gloria Macapagal Arroyo and Noynoy Aquino were controversial presidents as well, for several reasons: Gloria Macapagal Arroyo: • Was a corrupt president with a lot of graft and corruption in the government. • Was outrightly responsible for the 2nd abolition of the Capital Punishment in the Philippines, which opened a Pandora box of crime and the spread of crimes, and that reversal of the abolition of the Capital Punishment has not happened ever since. • Had corrupted and cheated in the presidential elections in 2004, which led to the controversy involving Macapagal Arroyo and an electoral official of Comelec which turned into the infamous Hello Garci scandal (and that same controversy would happened in the U.S. a decade years later in the Trump presidency during the 2020 U.S. Presidential elections). • Was a failure of protecting journalists and their safety when the Maguindanao massacre (involving the death of journalists) happened in 2009. • Was a failure in fixing crimes that would plagued her successor, Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino III. On the other hand, Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino III: • Was a weak and an incompetent president. • Horribly oversaw the disastrous response of the 2010 Manila hostage crisis, the catastrophic response of Typhoon Haiyan/Yolanda, and the disastrous Mamasapano operation, which turned into a disastrous fiasco and a massacre that involved the loss of the Saf 44 (which nearly derailed the peace process between the Philippine government and the rebel Muslim groups, as well as nearly derailed the establishment of the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao/BARM). • Was responsible for a lot of further controversies, such as the impeachment and ousting of Chief Justice Renato Corona, the Pork Barrel Scandal, the Disbursement Acceleration Fund scandal, the "laglag bala"/("bullet planting") airport scandal and the Dengvaxia scandal. • Was responsible for the Philippines' loss of Scarborough Shoal to China, in the first of many territorial water disputes between the Philippines and China in the West Philippine Sea/South China Sea, that would plague the successive and following presidencies (the Duterte administration and the Marcos Jr. administration). • Was a total failure of eliminating crime and at the very worse of all, even tolerating crime and drugs to run amok throughout the whole Philippines, that led to Aquino III's preferred presidential successor's defeat at the 2016 Presidential elections, Mar Roxas, and which led toward to Rodrigo Duterte's presidential victory.

@@ajpat9620to be fair with PNOY none of the controversies were his personal doing unlike Gloria and Duterte. These controversies were created by external factors that he tried his best to control but the media and the people judged him too harshly which they never throw against Duterte, or currently against Marcos.

Several corrections 1. The flag flying at the bottom left corner is incorrect. That was Emilio Aguinaldo’s flag, used from 1898 to 1901. Its design was simplified under Quezon in 1936. 2. Sergio Osmeña wasn’t “not well known.” In fact, he was the leader of the independence movement during the early years of US colonization. He was also a prominent statesman even before the Commonwealth was formed, serving as governor, congressman, and senator, often in opposition to Manuel Quezon. His position as VP was actually a compromise between him and Quezon. 3. It was under Manuel Roxas when the first communist insurgency started. 4. An important aspect of the Quirino administration was the establishment of the Central Bank, an initiative started under Manuel Roxas. 5. It was Quirino who sent troops to Korea, not Magsaysay. 6. Magsaysay was Quirino’s Secretary of Defense, not just any opponent. 7. He also ended the first communist insurgency through negotiations. No communist was sent into exile; rather, they were all sent to jail and released years afterwards. 8. Garcia was significant for implementing the Filipino First Policy which favored Filipino businesses over foreign ones. It specifically targeted American and Chinese businesses, deeming these as threats to Philippine economic progress. 9. Macapagal changed the date of independence because the US refused to send the Philippines further reparations payment for war damages. 10. The invasion of Sabah was still in the planning stage when it was discovered, prompting the massacre of Muslim commandos in Corregidor and the severing of diplomatic relations between the Philippines and Malaysia. This also marked the start of the Moro insurgency which only ended in 2012 with the establishment of a Bangsamoro autonomous region. 11. Large protests erupted in 1970 over the sending of men to Vietnam, worsening economic conditions, and increasing oil prices. 12. There was no coup d’etat attempt, it was merely an excuse by Marcos to suspend the writ of habeas corpus. 13. The mention of a political rally was the Plaza Miranda bombing, the victims of which were from the opposition. 14. Another factor to the declaration of Martial Law was another communist insurgency, one that would still rage on today. 15. Among those arrested was opposition leader Benigno S. Aquino Jr. 16. The 1973 Constitution wasn’t parliamentary, it was semi-presidential. There was no “majority party” as Marcos banned every political party (including his own Nacionalista Party). He then formed a one-party system under his new Kilusang Bagong Lipunan party. 17. Marcos had the support of the Americans, especially Ronald Reagan, up to the very end. They only withdrew support when the situation was already untenable on 25 February 1986. 18. Marcos’ downfall was also known as the People Power Revolution. It started on 22 February after the failure of Defense Minister Juan Ponce Enrile and General Fidel Ramos’ coup attempt. They sought the assistance of the Catholic Church, who then mobilized millions Filipinos into supporting the besieged coup plotters at Epifanio de los Santos Avenue, popularly called EDSA; this is why People Power was also known as the EDSA Revolution. 19. Corazon Aquino’s administration was marred by numerous coup attempts and the derailmemt of peace talks between her government and communist insurgents. Another natural disaster that occured under her administration was a massive earthquake in 1990. 20. Ramos was more known for his neoliberal economic reforms and diplomatic engagements with the rest of the world. His peace attempts all resulted in failure: the communists fell into infighting while the newly-formed Muslim Mindanao autonomus region was marred by corruption. 21. Estrada was succeeded by his Vice President, Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo-daughter of former President Macapagal. 22. Arroyo’s administration was marked by multiple political controversies: electoral fraud allegations in 2004, anomalous deals with China in 2007, and a severely weakened national government. Her handling of the communist insurgency was brutal and the war against Islamist terrorists worsened. Nonetheless, Arroyo stablized the economy which made it survive the 2008 financial crisis. These policies allowed for the economy to boom under her successor, Benigno S. Aquino III. 23. Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III was the son of Ninoy and Corazon Aquino, winning the presidency due to the outpouring of public support for his family after Corazon’s death. His administration was marked by massive improvements to the economy and efforts to stamp out corruption. However, he was also marred by natural disasters such as an earthquake in 2012 and a massive typhoon in 2013 which led to thousands dead. The controversial handling of the typhoon recovery, as well as a botched police operation in 2015 led to his party’s unpopularity and the emergence of Rodrigo Duterte to the presidency.

Arroyo, a reformer? LOL - Northrail project is a scam - NBN-ZTE broadband deal is a scam - PDAF/pork barrel scam is a scam - The fertilizer funds she diverted for her 2nd term campaign is a scam Aquino is the true reformer. His only blemish is the DAP scandal which was originally meant to accelerate his infrastructure projects but which the supreme court ruled unconstitutional (especially since it's made of recovered PDAF funds). It may be abuse of power, but at least not downright corruption like Gloria's use of the PDAF funds. Aquino's fiscal reforms started the economic boom that we're experiencing now. Unfortunately fiscal policies are not as flashy as bridges and subways, though that subway was also part of PNoy's "Metro Manila Dream Plan" which is a deal he struck with Japan under JICA in his last year in office.

@10:42 Mrs Aquino wasn't the one who decline to renew the Treaty. She wanted the US bases since it benefited her during the 1989 coup. It was the Senate that wanted the Americans out. US and my country tried to renegotiate the lease, the former wanted similar payment of military aid, while latter wanted an increase lease in cold hard cash. Two sides did not came into an agreement. The nail to the coffin was the Mount Pinatubo eruption that caused extensive damage to the US bases especially Clark Airbase. In the end, the US declined to renew the treaty.

Hey, make video about an untold story about how Islam and Christianity came to Indonesia please. As an Indonesian, Islam didn't really come with trade especially to what happened with my ethnic groups, an indigenous ethnic group in the middle of Sumatran jungles and Bukit Barisan mountain range near the largest vulcanic lake in the world. In 1539, Acehnese Sultanate invaded my ancestors's land when one of our king refused Islam. Aceh faced difficulties during the war then they bought & hired Ottoman weapons & mercenaries to invade us. In the 1810s during Padri War, an Islamic civil war in Minangkabau, Padri soldiers heard a cannibalistic pagan tribes in the middle of North Sumatra remained as pagans, Padri soldiers invaded our kingdom and massacred 200.000 people even executed our king for not accepting Islam, they brutally ransacked our villages/cities & massacred my ethnic groups who refused their religion. They were failed to conquer us when a cholera outbreak happened thanks to dead bodies that leaked cholera. After they failed to conquer us, our ancestors were devastated after watching our ransacked kingdoms and dead relatives even cholera outbreak happened and severely decimated our population. My ancestors became hostile towards outsiders/foreigners. Years later, a couple of US Baptist missionarists came and introduced Christianity. Too bad, the locals thought they were another hostile foreigners/outsiders and they caught & ate them. Before Christianity came, my people were pagans who had cannibalistic culture/rituals. My ancestors conducted cannibalism towards people who did terrible crimes such as rape, murder, or treason. POWs were also eaten back then. Before Christianity, my ancestors believed if we ate people, it'd grant us magical strength. We also did child sacrifice ritual by sacrificing li'l boys to gain black magic. Besides cannibalism and child sacrifice, my ancestors were known as jewellery makers and weavers. A German missionarist came and introduced Christianity among my people. He built schools, hospitals, etc. But a lot of kingdom citizens hated him coz Christianity could destroy our culture and religion such as our cannibalistic rituals. There're some reports that some people tried to assassinate him to stop Christianity from destroying our old faiths and culture but failed. Cannibalism and child sacrifice were eventually banned when Dutch colonial regime imposed anti cannibalism law towards us after annexing us in the 1907. If Christianity never came, perhaps my people would still do capital punishment in form of cannibalism and child sacrifice. Unlike other Indonesian regions which were colonized for 350 years, we only got conquered in 1907 when Dutch soldiers succesfully assassinated our priest king. Dutch faced difficulties at fighting a cannibalistic nation in the middle of Sumatran jungles near the largest lake in Indonesia

@@oghawil943 Applying common sense you can easily understand what colonialism has done on the name of "civilizing". What civilization!? When India, China, Mesopotamia were civilizations, Europe was in fact a land of bunch of stateless jungles. Ironically, civilized are those who made the industrial revolution that is threatening the entire existence of world. Civilized are those who killed billions of people, committed countless atrocities, destroyed peaceful indigenous cultures. On the matter of civilization, I am sorry, I can't agree with you. I am not saying that cannibalism is a good practice, but is not as deadly as colonialism. Look what they have done to Celts and other Pagans just for worshipping the nature and not destroying her. By the way, I do not belong to Islamic cultures, any Abrahamic culture rather.

I wish you alloted atleast some time to mention presidents Gloria Arroyo and Benigno Aquino because those 2 laid the foundation of the real economic recovery of the Philippines. They both have mixed records during their tenure but looking at statistics especially the economic ones, those 2 contributed much to the success and speed of growth of the Philippine economy. Nevertheless, great video and hopefully more people would be more interested in studying Philippine history and World history!!

Yeah Ignore the fact they became basis of corruption, World History probably got this from a corrupt dilawan page, the only reason philippines have an economy and is middle class because of the projects the other governments did which the dilawans called * corrupt* mainly marcos who is the only reason philippines is well modernize and you can visit your family in the south with NLEX and SLEX, i dont know why you support such failed governments such as the aquinos, only did to the philippines is hypend the prices of our rice and food, and destroyed marcos projects for economic development, mainly aquino killed more people than marcoses executions, my parents and granparents always tell me the stories of the horrors that took place in the rebel years of the philippiens under gloria
@ajpat9620
@ajpat9620 14 күн бұрын

Some corrections there: Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino III's administration, not Benigno Aquino Jr.'s administration, as that name of Benigno Aquino Jr. is refered to Benigno Aquino III's father, Benigno "Ninoy" Aquino Jr. Furthermore, Benigno "Ninoy" Aquino Jr. was not a president, and was a senator being exiled in the U.S. and was even assassinated in August 21, 1983, (which his plans of becoming president was never realized, and instead, his wife, Cory Aquino ended up becoming president after winning the 1986 snap elections and after the events of the people power revolution).

This history did not include important elements in the Philippine history. * No mention of the Sugar Barons’ role in Philippine politics since 1946. * No mention of the Country’s change of name from being the Philippine Islands (a US Territory, just like Puerto Rico and Guam) to the Republic of the Philippines (an independent country). * No mention that during the Spanish handing over of the Philippines to the US, the Cordillera region and the Sulu Sultanate were still not officially or technically part of the Philippines. * No mention of the founding of Alto Broadcasting System (ABS), the first TV Network in the Philippines, by former President Quirinos brother * No mention that former President Macapagal started the revival of the Sulu Sultanates claims to Northern Sabah, Marcos, Sr. Just continued and improved the project. No mention also of the British Navy’s confrontation with a Filipino Navy boat that relates to this event. * No mention of the GSIS blunder in purchasing Hacienda Luisita for the people during President Magsaysay, with the help of Ninoy Aquino, just ending up at the hands of the Conjuancos. * No mention of the rise of the Communist Party of the Philippines (CCP) and the establishment of the National People’s Army (NPA) together with HUKBALAHAP, a communist guerrilla group established during WW2. * No mention of China sending two ships to the Philippines full of new M16 rifles for the rising Communist NPA guerrillas, but later on being captured by the Marcos government (please search MV Karagatan for details). Yes, the ship wreck can still be seen where the clash between the Marcos government and the NPAs clashed. * No mention of the Marcos government asking for help from its allies in defending itself from the threat of the communists taking-over even after the country helped in the Korean war and Vietnam war. * No mention of the Marcos government starting to claim the Spratly’s island group. * No mention of the Cory government erecting a statue of a Chinese CCP Official in the Philippine’s Quezon province. * No mention of China starting to build structures in the Spratly’s Island group during the Cory government, as well as the grounding of MV Sierra Madre during President Estrada’s government. With this, however, I am aware that the video should be brief and could not contain every details of the Philippines’ history. I just shared these information for additional awareness of the audience.
