R40s

The R32 because it retired about 2 weeks ago. It'd be nice to see how it evolved over the years.

Fun fact, as a kid, I used to be scared of the Slanted design of the R40S units.

And the R32's, they are some of my favorite B Div Rolling Stock. I'm glad I was able to ride those trains during their multiple years in service.

Yeah, I love the Traction Motor sounds from them as well. Some of the best in the system. IMO, the only thing that comes close to it are the R160 Siemens units.

From a Train Operator point of view the R142 is superior in speed and comfort over the R142A. They accelerate faster with no roll back and there is no bucking in the acceleration or braking. The R142S are also quieter and the seats are more comfortable for the operators. The only advantage from operating point of view is that R142A have slightly better cab during cold weather.

Really? I would've never expected a Bombardier unit to have better performance than a Kawasaki.

@@MysticTransit The R142A/R188 cars have a tendency to roll back when leaving a station, especially on a grade. They also buck at times, which doesn't happen with the R142. The AdTrans propulsion on that fleet is to blame. That's why the R160s used Alstom (same as the R142) and Siemens propulsion systems.

I have to agree with you there. I live by the seven line and yeah sometimes that train feels like it the rails when it leaves the station

@@MysticTransit Ride the late night (4) and you'll see why. When I used to have to commute on the (4), I would hope I get a R142 as opposed to a R142A. The acceleration and take off is faster with a 142 than a 142A. The comparison holds true for the R143's and R160's on the (L).

I grew up riding the R142A's on the (6) as well. (Which is why I added in the Best Line part) I really miss these units on the (6) Line, but it's understandable why they needed to go. I only hope they get shifted back to the (6) when the R262's enter service.

@@MysticTransit The R142as will be back on the Pelham 6 line when the brand new R262/as comes for CBTCs to replace all the R62/R62AS on the 1 3 6 S lines for CBTS. For now we all have to deal with the R62as back on the Pelham line and the same goes for the 1/3/S lines. I really truly miss the R142as on the Pelham 6 line because it held it down. Nothing cannot replace the R142as or take over the R 142as on the Pelham line anymore I'm keeping 100% real.

The R262 will use the same test track. That's the official IRT one.

Not true. A stands for Auxiliary since it was an addition to the original order. Most big orders are like that, especially when multiple builders are involved.

The (6) didn't keep them because it's easier for the IRT to have only 1 fleet on a line. Since the R142/A's are so similar to each other, they can both run on the (4), because the crews know how to work both of them. Also, the R142A's are faster than the R62A's, and that might cause delays, with an R142A catching up to an R62A, and having to slow down.

What I think the rolling stock assignments will be: (1) - R142 (2) - R262 (3) - R142/R262 (4) - R262 (5) - R262 (6) - R142/A The MTA will want their newest subway cars for their Express Lines.

The Pelham 6 line is definitely gonna have mix equipments R142/As R262AS just like the R211As with End ways. I have a real spriital feeling they are gonna make the R262As I'm telling you. When you get a chance read the R262 plans very carefully please.

The 8 Thrid Ave Elevated line gets all the R62AS from the 1 6 S lines when the brand new R262/As open and close ways comes I'm telling you. Thrid Avenue Elevated line is definitely picking up steam again then ever.

I already did a video for the R62/A’s, however, I can do one in the future for the Redbird Trains.

They could of put the R62AS on the Jerome Ave 4 line so this way the 4 has half of the R62AS from the Pelham 6 line and the 4 keep there R142s while they keep the R142as on the Pelham 6 line and half of the R62AS on the Pelham 6 line.

70 YEARS? I doubt it. The useful life for trains ends around the 40-year mark.

@@MysticTransit I know it's unusual, but with the reliability of MTA finishing its projects on time very poor, it doesn't seem unusual for this to happen. The R-32 lasted almost 60 years, and with the great quality of the R-142 class, that doesn't seem as unusual. The R-62 could also make it to a similar age of 63 years if the MTA can't finish the R-262 project on time. If it were up to the highest standards the R-142 would already be the oldest rolling stock in their fleet, the M-7 class would be the oldest rolling stock on the Long Island Railroad & Metro North Railroad. The R-62 would have retired 5 years ago, The R-68 would have 4 years ago, the R-46 25 years ago, and the R-44 28 years ago. With all these avoidable problems going on, the proper maintenance continues to be in jeopardy.

It's technically a totally different train, however, it has some of the best features that the R142A's have.

Fleet uniformity is the name of the game since it makes zero sense in the IRT’s case to have it’s maintain two separate fleet generations that require totally different parts.

I don't think the systems on the trains can be upgraded. It's said that the R142A's run on Windows 98... Also, I believe Subway Cars go through extensive maintenance every 7 years.

When the R188 order was developed, it was decided to convert the R142As from the 6 as the R62As were not ready for retirement yet. As a result, the order was for 506 cars. 126 of them were new cars, 88 of them were new train consists. The other 38 cars were extra cars to add to the 38 conversion units (380 cars) to make 38 11-car trains. That gives a total of 506 cars or 46 11-car sets to displace the 440 R62As assigned to the Flushing line. Those have been converted to 44 10-car units that went to the 6 route and since it’s 44 trains replacing 38 R142A consists, and the service requirements call for about 36-37 trains in service for rush hours, the six extra R62A units then displaced all remaining R142As from the 6 and provide all the service for the route since it made zero sense to send those six extra consists somewhere else and to provide a bit of fleet uniformity. At that point the R142As were reassigned to the 4, which sent the R142s (in the 7000s numbering) over to the 2 and 5 to bolster service.

The Brand New R262/as will come real soon They have to find a company factors who is gonna build the brand new R262/as. Will find out Donna or later what factory is gonna build the brand new R262/as

The R62/as and the ledges R32s are holding it down real good with no rush or dents and no holes in them either. They would be stupid to scrap these good old R32s keep some on the side just in case if the R211/as brake down or the R179s. R68/as R46S . We know the A C lines are getting CBTS.
