I went from MG to Garmin and haven't looked back. I love my Garmin, it's quiet and powerful. The one negative I could point out is that it seems to want to back up when you hit spot lock. I usually hit spot lock and as it starts to back peddle I take it off then quickly hit spot lock again.

My dad still runs an Evinrude Scout on his immaculate 1989 Stratos 285 Pro. I love that trolling motor. I also love the fact that boat has a ‘91 175 black max on a 6” Rapid Jack too, but that’s a discussion for another video.

When I was 7 or 8 (I’m 12 now) I had a late 90s early 2000s minn kota in my shed, and I put it on a little row boat and used it almost every single day of the summer, spring and early fall for at least an hour, and about 2 years later it stopped working and I think it was because we had no fuse on it. That motor and that row boat was what got me into boating and fishing and I now know so much more. That motor served me well. A few months after it died my dad went out and surprised me with a 4 hp mercury fourstroke for my boat. It was way to heavy for it so we ended up buying a small Jon boat for the motor. Then it wasn’t the right shaft length and was sold the motor and since then I have bought/got for free from old people 6 boats, which I fixed and use to this day. It was that minn kota that started it all.

My first bass boat, a 1978 Ranger 1750A had a Silver Troll Motor on it. 24volt 24lbs of thrust (I think). About 1983 Minn Kota came out with a 50lb motor, game changer! Bought one as soon as it came out. The motor was to heavy for the shaft or bracket, bent constantly. 1984 I went to a Cajun and motor guide. 1988 another Ranger with an OMC Trolling Motor, best TM in the weeds ever invented. Went to a 36 volt Motor Guide as soon as they came out, never had a problem with running short on batteries ever since.

Should do one on graphs. My dad had one of the first in the 80s. A Lawrence i believe. He sould motor around slow and print receipt paper take it home and write notes on it. Lol. It printed on thermal paper. I was just telling my oldest about it the other day when we were fishing.

Motor Guides were manufactured by Herschede Hall Clock Co. in Starkville, MS, pronounced "Her-shu-dee". I was a student at Miss State Univ in 1975. I did some IT work for them one night and Rich Herschede offered to pay me. I was a starving student, but it was less than an hour, so I told him to buy me a beer sometime. He took me out in the plant and gave me their best foot-controlled TM. I put it on my 10' jon boat and used it for many years, just like all the pros- well, sorta...

Love the channel! your passion and energy for bass fishing and knowledge of the bass boat tech is legendary. I agree with you about the Johnson/Evinrude trolling motors, they are super reliable, thrust is way under rated. I have 3 12/24 motors , 2 are rated in the 33 lbs but move my boat very quick on 24v high, and the large prop 58 lbs thrust is great for rough water. The small prop motors go through weeds like a saladmaster and rarely load up. My first bass boats was a Skeeter Starfire 150, a rocket on the water, but wouldnt handle rough water very well. I love my second boat which i still own 1988 Ranger 363v with dual step hull, great ride and performance. Both ran Johnson / Evinrude trolling motors, the one on my Ranger is still going after 35 years, many state and local tournaments and 4 B.A.S.S. Eastern Divisionals. Keep up the History Videos, old boats, motors, electronics, the topics are many. Thanks Again for your passion for Bass fishing!

Friend of mine had one in the late 70's that had two motors and two props from one control head! It was 12 volts, probably had 25 to 30 pounds of thrust. He thought he was the s---! And we all thought so too! My first bass boat had the famous Mercury Thruster with hand control. I thought it was the greatest at that time. Except that huge prop was very fragile. It would have never stood up to my Minn Kota with the way I use it now. I have seen many of the ones you mentioned. Trolling motors have come a long, long way from Mr. O.G.! Great video as usual Andy!

My favorite trolling motor I've ever owned had to be a Minn Kota Genesis on the front of my '89 Starfire... I loved the auto deploy and retract... The up and down trim ability was awesome. But it seemed to be a little noisy and drained batteries quicker than the other motors.

I have an old Minnkota.....but not that old. It's a 12V transom mount from the early 80's. I wish Minnkota wouldn't have taken so long to come out with their brushless Ultrex. I waited a long time to upgrade my old (1999) 24v motor and finally went with the ghost last year.

My favorite for years was the saltwater motorguide hand control. fished many a tourney with it. I also owned a Johnson trolling motor. But today I have the Garman and I love it. It is a great trolling motor. Took a few days to learn the cable free foot control but again I love it now. Been running it for 3.5 yrs with no issues and fish it 4 days a week. My friend has an Ultra and is now looking for the big toe power switch. And while helping him I found alot of KZfaq vids how to fix an ultra with all kinds of different problems. After I saw all those videos there is no way I would buy an Ultra.

This info couldn't be more inaccurate. Gustav Trouve was testing his electric portable propeller in 1881. In 1892 Wilbur Salibury patented his flex shaft electric trolling motor in Chicago and it was being used in New York's central park. By 1896 Samuel Newton Smith was running his electric troller in Menomonie WI. Shortly after he partnered with Tracy B Hatch designing a Submerged electric motor with a propeller mounted direct to the armature shaft running underwater and being water-cooled. They were issue a patent for it in 1899. By 1912, The Jewel portable electric boat motor was beginning to manufacture a design with an electric motor mounted on a vertical shaft connecting to a worm gear. They continued production through the mid -20’s. Finally, by the 30’s multiple designs from the like of Lejay, Minnkota and others were beginning to hit the market.

I'm cool with you guys makin money but I'm not going to pay crazy shipping cost. I build dog training equipment that weighs 17 lbs. and we ship them all over the country for $22.00 why so much for shipping a shirt. Granted I'm a 3x but dam. Ok I'm done whining and bitch'n . Back in the late 80's and early 90's I had a great trolling motor from up your way it was a Ram trolling motor. It was quiet and had some good power even in the weeds it worked well.
