Join us on a new Expedition Extinct as we look at the weird history of the construction-based theme park - Diggerland. Here kids anyone can operate full-size excavators and diggers. With multiple locations around the world, 2021 saw the first of the Diggerland Parks go extinct.

What and where is your local park that you made amazing memories at?

Georgia Cyclone at Six Flags over Georgia. I remember it was one of my favorite roller coasters and I used to ride it for hours when i was little and not tall enough for the other coasters. It was my favorite ride at that time and I marathoned it for hours every visit. I made so many memories from riding with my parents. Also I have many memories from riding Scream Machine Backwards also at Six Flags Over Georgia. It was a quiet day and all of my family were on the train. It was rough but we all had a fun time.

I suppose a plus side of closing down a Diggerland vs a normal theme park is that they can just drive the rides away, and put them back to use in construction.

The whole concept of Diggerland is insane, but you can see they people behind it really had a passion for bringing diggers to those not fortunate enough to be OSHA-Certified. Them having such a positive safety record is incredible.

Something I-ve heard before is that kids like to be taken seriously (by that i mean to be treated like adults) and when they are taken seriously, they usually behave much better. That may have something to do with their safety record.
@cocolocobirb981
@cocolocobirb981 2 жыл бұрын
@@ixcutamp8059 that’s one reason why adventure playgrounds are better, and can even be safer then the “safe” playgrounds. When kids are using bricks and nails they know it’s serious, but when they are on equipment designed to be safe they are going to take risks and hurt themselves because it’s designed to be safe so they don’t think it’s going to hurt them.
@cocolocobirb981
@cocolocobirb981 2 жыл бұрын
@@ixcutamp8059 another thing that kinda relates is shop class? In shop you’ll have 11 year olds messing with saws and drills and yet they don’t usually get majorly hurt, yes a few burns or scrapes/cuts but no sawing off your hand. They are usually scared, and so are cautious, whereas an experienced user can get comfortable enough to make a mistake that causes a major injury.

As someone who grew up driving heavy equipment on my grandparents' farm I can see why the park has been such a success, and why its safe. That equipment is dangerous but it's really easy to limit that danger, especially for the operator. I can remember one time I had a load high in the bucket on a skidsteer and managed to flip it forward... well besides knocking me around and scaring the shit out of me it didn't hurt me or the machine and being that it caught itself with the hydraulic arm I just pushed it back upright and scooped back up the load that spilled. God that shit is fun!

I took my daughter to Diggerland in Kent nearly 10 years ago. She loved it! She drove a car for the first time there (an ex-police car, no less) and chauffeured me around in a massive tractor. We had dumper races too! The Spindizzy is ace. Alex got massive brownie points at school for operating heavy plant (she had pictures to prove it), and she looked at the vehicles in use when more houses were being built at the end of the road in a completely different light.

My personal favorite was the auger ride, where you stand on the three point hitch to act as extra ballast while your dad digs post holes. Make sure to keep your arms inside the ride at all times, lest the auger rip them off.

There's a full size one in Las vegas if you make it out. I believe it started with the 2008 market crash. One construction had leases on loads of heavy equipment and a massive lot if dirt that suddenly had no construction contract. The owner opened it to the public instead, kept some employees on to teach customers to operate the machines and let them go out and have fun in bulldozers and other large machines. Successful enough that it seems they moved and kept it going.

It's an idea that is genius, incredibly British and massively eccentric all at the same time - it's one of those things that seems so obvious with hindsight. Totally true that even adults are fascinated by diggers and other related equipment, some of the most popular youtube channels are centred around it. For some bizarre reason, they built another location in suburban south Jersey in America recently. It’s definitely regarded as a weird roadside attraction even by the locals. I haven’t been yet but I drive by every time I’m in my hometown.

Southern NEW jersey. NOT Jersey. Stop referring to my state that way. Very disrespectful!

I grew up around the corner from the HE Services site on the Medway City Estate. As a small child, being let loose on a load of heavy construction equipment was seriously cool

They need to add a steamroller to Diggerland and let the kids experience riding a steamroller with the vibration on, that's fun. Also a concrete pump is an awesome machinery and everyone should try working on one, or at least play with one...

This looks so marvelous. There's a place (I think in Texas?) where you can pay a few hundred bucks to run a piece of heavy equipment for a few hours. And even with that, it sounds tempting. This sounds way better. Hopefully they don't go extinct, I'd love to go there.

Its really interesting how creative people can be that they use actual construction equipment to subsitute for amusement park rides adn you know what I respect the hustle as long as the park does well thats all that matters

I went to the Kent park and it was very fun. The charming local buisness mixed with the cool construction theme made it quite enjoyable.

Great video. This actually looked fun to go to as a kid and maybe even at my age now. I do wonder what the next video is. Are we possibly returning back to Efteling?

When I was a kid, my dad rented a backhoe to dig some drainage pipes in our backyard. He let me drive it around a little and dig out some of the trenches. It was amazing

I know this is likley out of your norm but can you consider doing a video on Haussner's in Baltimore Maryland? I saw a documentry on it here in Japan and it seemed like a unique place and a Baltimore landmark.

I remember going to one of these as a kid for a birthday, not sure which but given I think kent would have been closest, I'm guessing it was that one. It was a lot of fun, loud and dusty for sure but that felt very fitting! Don't remember the giant spinning one with the seats in the bucket, but I remember driving around in some kind of big 4x4, and operating some of the diggers. Nice to hear they're still holding out, to some degree anyway.

I do remember going to the Devon location back in 2012/2013. Quite sad to hear it had to close due to the pandemic. I do have a few memories of the place, like when I was driving a big backhoe around an off road track. Good times. Great video!

Oh my god. I haven’t seen the video yet but I went there once!There was a snow area with manmade snow and there was like this single pump making it all. And all the snow was dirty and horrible. Some of the park was fun but after about an hour or two I was bored of the place. It was maybe 2002, it was freezing and rainy and there was a guy called “Metal Mickey” and he was a giant screwdriver or something. But oh my god, If you never went there, you didn’t miss much 😂 Personally Butlins with the Donkey Kong Country/Ninja Turtles area was the thing I loved around that time.
