The History of Virgin Atlantic
Since 1934, Imperial Airways, which then became BOAC, and finally into British Airways was the dominating commercial airline of the United Kingdom, having the monopoly on air travel in Britain, and pioneering many of the routes departing out of the UK; however, after some time it became apparent that there was a need for a change within the British Airline Industry, so, to spice it up, in 1984 Sir Richard Branson founded Virgin Atlantic with the hopes to make air travel more stylish, exciting, and enjoyable once more, and that’s where it all began!
Virgin Atlantic would soon grow to be a close competitor of British Airways, and this competition would sometimes lead to some unsightly slander, and much more often result in protests or campaigns against either airline.
Virgin Atlantic would develop into one of the most successful airlines flying out of Europe with routes connecting the United Kingdom to the rest of the globe; however, these successes were also often met with some challenges, including much financial instability during the 1990s and early 2000s.
After a large overhaul of airline policies, and the flow of management within the airline, a more modern and innovative Virgin Atlantic rose from their financial despair once again being a member on the forefront of the British Aviation Industry.
Much more recently Virgin Atlantic has suffered heavy financial loss due to the COVID-19 Global Pandemic. These losses resulted in the closing of Virgin Atlantic’s Gatwick Airport base, and the laying off of 8,000 workers. Almost on the verge of bankruptcy, Virgin Atlantic was saved by a financial aid package amounting to about $1.5 Billion United States Dollars.
This video provides insight into the innovative, triumphant, and sometimes unstable history of Virgin Atlantic, but gives hope for the future of the airline to last for many more years to come.
