I'm intrigued how you mentioned that Master Rule 3 was the most despised master rule, because my personal experience pointed to that being Master Rule 4. Every new mechanic since Synchro did not actually change how your deck played, but Link monsters were mandatory if you wanted more than one extra deck monster on the field at a time, and that pissed a *lot* of people off, myself included. Maybe it's just the context of playing with people who hadn't changed decks but a handful of times over many years instead of chasing the meta (we were young and didn't have the disposable income for that), but that change alone seriously killed a huge portion of the community I was in off because they felt like they were being strong-armed into purchasing new cards they didn't actually care about and couldn't play the decks they loved anymore. It's the first change that made me think Konami wanted to make money not by creating new or interesting deck styles for us to want to experiment with but by flat out changing the rules on older decks and forcing them to evolve newer cards into their strategies to even try and stay alive, which is basically why I quit at that point.

I almost quit Yugioh because of Master Rule 4. But Master Rule 5 brought me back and now my old decks are playable again!

I stopped playing just before Pendulums came out. I recently started playing with the Yugioh game on Switch. I was dissapointed at first because you could only summon only 1 Fusion or Syncro or XYZ monster without having Link monsters with the right arrows so even though I liked the game I didn't had as much fun as I thought. But when the Monster Rules 2020 came out the game is a blast to play. You can ignore LInks and just summon a bunch of monsters at once, you know like how it should have been from the beginning? Summoning a bunch of Shaddols Fusions at once, a bunch of Raidraptors at once, a bunch of Blackwings at once? So much fun!

Master rule 5 got me back into the game . hated when they added link monsters

As someone who was into Yugioh as a kid and only just recently started learning about it again, this video is super helpful for me. A lot of videos mention Master Rules but those same channels don't tend to define their terms, so thanks for making this :)

Doug, I love longer videos like these. I tend to listen to videos in the background while I play a game (in fact I played Animal Crossing while listening to this) and longer form videos like this are perfect for that.

The same way you fondly remember synchros I actually have fond memories of xyz monsters. I started playing yugioh after I watched some reruns of the old series and after I started watching zexal I think I was ten or nine at the time(I think, It was right after the series started.) Anyway I got some random packs from gx and the utopia structure deck. Back then I really only had my grandma to play with even though she didn't really understand much of the cards (hell I didn't understand the cards myself). Now I know what my cards do and I have friends to play with, but those were nice times.

I love XYZ and master rule 2 because while I was never away from Yu-Gi-Oh but by the time XYZ were released I wasn't playing Yu-Gi-Oh as much as I did And XYZ is what got me back to the game

You had me at being able to Fusion Summon and Synchro Summon freely again. With a little fine-tuning, my deck may actually be viable even if it won't always win.

It always blows my mind to find out that synchros came out in 2008 and xyz came out in 2011 because I played casually with friends up until 2015 because that was the year everyone found out about synchros and xyz. Somehow nobody in my town had ever heard about those mechanics until 2015. None of the cards were ever found in any packs or structure decks. It’s like my town existed in an alternate reality where synchro and xyz didn’t actually come out until way later than it did for everyone else.

Honestly I like 30+ minute videos, especially about Yu-Gi-Oh so o say keep it up

The “going first is advantageous” thing is always surprising to me, but that’s because I only play the duel links format where turn 2 is significantly stronger than turn 1. But it makes sense in the tcg format where there’s more life points and more options for negation and disruption.

I just realized something. MR4 is like the “New Coke” of YGO formats. They implemented it to change things up but people didn’t like it so when they undid it (aka went back to “Old Coke”), people came back in droves excited about being able to do what they used to be able to do.

I think you should have mentioned that we not only got the new mechanics but also the psychic, wyrm and cyberse type with the master rules

Master rule 2 is definitely my favorite one, xyz is my favorite summoning mechanic. Day33 of waiting for new photon support

5:16 The effect on the player base was really quite dramatic. The Yu-Gi-Oh! players born in the early 90s were pretty appalled by the decision to add extra deck monsters that were so strong, so powerful, that deck building would be forever changed to accommodate them. They left in droves, and it very much DID seem like the end of Yu-Gi-Oh! Look at the card releases, and note how soon Goyo guardian was released after the introduction of Synchros. We were hardly prepared. Dark magician of chaos and breaker the magical warrior were considered some of the best cards in the game at that time. Power curve has risen exponentially since then, And most of modern deck building now revolves around terms like "combo-off" and "chains". The decks that came out in the immediate aftermath were auto pilot and non-interactive. Synchros only made decks like the Lightsworns (which already played themselves) even more powerful. And if you're curious, this has literally just happened in Magic the gathering with the release of the newest set. They have added an extra deck and cards that can be called arbitrarily from it.

I used to DESPISE link monsters because you were forced to use them if you wanted to even play the game, but now, I’m willing to give them a shot. Now that I have a substantial link collection, and I have a few monsters that are pretty tough to get, we’ll see how they play for me. It’s great to know that the original three styles are no longer restricted, and the arrows only apply to other links and pendulum monsters now.

When you said Synchros has been around for 12 years, it really feels unreal. It feels like it was just yesterday I got excited seeing Junk Synchron for the first time, chanting Junk Warrior's name, playing Tele-DAD only in Tag Force 3 as it was waaaaay out of my budget. Man, time really did fly by.

I started really playing the game (with proper rules) once synchros came out. I was probably around 12 and even synchros were pretty confusing for myself and my middle school friends. Listening to this video really brought me back to those good old days and all the years in between.

It’s interesting how old school players would complain about synchros when we basically had the same concept with contact fusion. There were multiple fusion monsters that could be summoned by just sending to the gy/removing from play the fusion materials from the field to summon the fusion monster (like XYZ Dragon and Neo Spacian monsters.)

I usually don’t leave comments but I had to say that I really liked this video. It was long but very informative and interesting. Discussions like this are great. I definitely learned a lot. You can tell you’ve put a lot of thought into content over this quarantine.

As a collector I've just recently got back into this game, spurred on by my discovery of Link monsters a few months ago. Been collecting since the beginning with most of my cards dating back to the Original Yu-Gi-Oh days. I remember when the Synchro cards came out back when I was a freshman in high school and fell for then immediately which probably makes up almost another half of my collection. Lost interest in it when the XYZ cards came out but still got some from that period as well before stopping all together just before the pendulum cards released. Been picking up new cards for my collection these past few months off eBay. Even gone as far as to start watching old episodes of the different series again as well.

Ya know, I'd like to see you and BladeYGO do a collab together. Y'all have the same kinda style, and I think a history video from you two would be neat.

Great video Dzeef as a player of yugioh for many many years I was mostly a casual player except for a time during the GX era where i played way mroe seriously, and i never understood Master Rules until now, so thank you!

Thank you for this timeline, I needed it! I quit YGO right after the introduction of Pendulum, mainly because it looked like Synchro and XYZ were now less effective, as well as control decks (my favorites). 2017 didn't catch me either, seemed like an overcomplicated introduction to heal from pendulum plague (but I wasn't into YGO anymore at the time so I was probably wrong). Having looked at master rule 5, and with the recent Ghost from the Past expansion, I am now newly curious of playing, collecting and discovering new strategies without having to bury my old beloved decks!

I've been trying to get into YuGiOh a lot more recently. It's nice to see there's a video explaining the history of the game. Thanks :)

XYZs monsters is my number 1 favorite mechanic. It's widely different from other mechanic and yet still remained simple. Also it's probably the most powerful mechanic since it had highest number of extra deck monsters banned only links coming close second. I wouldn't be surprised if links surpass XYZ monsters in terms of number of monsters being banned.

I came back myself only playing Duel Links right now after leaving the game when it was 5Ds. I didn't know what master rules were. Thanks, for this very informative vid! Although now I'm just overwhelmed by the sheer playstyles the game has to offer now.

I'm sure other people have said it, but Magic the Gathering has always had a "15 cards or 0 cards" side deck, and it may be that yugioh followed this simply because "That's clearly what card games do". MtG's side deck rules include that you can be DQ'd from official games if your side deck doesn't contain 0 or 15, but they eventually changed it to allow people to add basic lands (which you may have any number of) to their side deck if they accidentally register an incomplete side deck at a tournament.

I play Yu-Gi-Oh casually, but every time I have problems with card interpretation I always stop, read the card slowly and paying attention to punctuation and I if I still don't get it, I always try to get an explanation online, so it gladens me that the "problem solving text card" thing happened and they are actively trying to always better the understanding of players

I agree that it was a good idea to not introduce any new Extra Deck monster types with Master Rule 5, but part of me still has nostalgia for when Synchros first came and I was like "Oh man, I can think of so many new Extra Deck monster types!" Dream Monsters: Monsters summoned from the Extraa Deck that required a *very* specific material, but only 1 material. Basically a way to make completely outdated cards usable - like "Wall Shadow" and "Gate Guardian". Later on even had the idea of an "Extra Deck Effect" where they would reveal themselves in the Extra Deck to activate an effect that would help with the summon/consistency of their material, like "Nightmare Wall Shadow" being able to equip "Magical Labyrinth" to "Labyrinth Wall" from the Deck, or such. Honestly? Mainly thought of as a way to give Normal Monsters effects that matched their lore. Chain Monsters: Monsters that could be summoned either turn, but you could only summon 1 per turn. Initially thought of as just "Summon at a certain Chain Count", essentially turned into monsters that can summon themselves on a Quick Effect in response to very specific conditions. Had the potential to be very broken though if their summon conditions and effects weren't balanced. Also helped by the introduction of Link Monsters as the idea changed so they could only summon to the Extra Monster Zone / Link Arrows and they themselves would have pointers up to their Chain Rating. Speed Monsters: Back when I hoped Turbo Duel format would be more of a thing. Using Speed Counters to summon monsters from the Extra Deck, didn't really explore this idea as much as the other two. ...Yeah, this comment ended up being an excuse to share fanmade Extra Deck monster types. Sorry. :x

I was only a kid at the time, but i remember synchros being beyond busted when they came out. This was the first strategy type that didnt have to draw or search very specific cards to get out a specific board, and could even use the same cards in hand to get out different options based on what you needed for the situation. So where old decks would need to play as many of their core strategy cards as possible to hope to draw into and would need to draw counters/outs every time they needed them, these new decks could just run a full list of tuners and non-tuners that combo well together so they could practically always open their best ending monsters and perfect outs. This inherent advantage meant synchros/tuners would have needed to be complete garbage as individual cards to not completely outclass everything else at the time. I personally like this shift now since it made yugioh so much more consistent and gave the turn player so many more options, but id say that masterrule change is the largest shift yugioh has ever had.

Thank you for making this video. I was very confused because I am just now getting back into the game during master rules 5 and I was confused when pendulum zones were gone, you no longer needed link monsters to get into extra deck plays, and you know longer draw at the beginning of your turn if your going first. I was very confused by field spells being used at the same time. After watching this video I have a way better idea of how Yugioh evolved over time. So far loving master rules 5.

I played from lob and I quit like a month before xyz came out. I loved synchro when I played. I just started playing again.. it's taking me a while to catch up. The game is so much different than it was in 2009-2010.

I've been retired from Yu-Gi-Oh for a while now. I got hooked on the Pendulum mechanic, and invested a lot in it. Link Monsters and Master Rule 4, nerfed both Pendulum summons and the Extra deck restrictions. I've played a few times with Master Rule 5, but I thought I had my fun with the game ( I barely won any games, mostly lost. Yugioh is a money game). I still have my Pendulum Magician Odd eyes deck. My only regret is not experimenting with other decks.

I still love the fusion method. Aslong as they keep coming out with Fusion support there will be fusions.

An important comment on the xyz ruleset: At the start we didn't know that xyz material is *not* on the field, but in this weird state. Tourguide into sangan make xyz, detach for some xyz eff (Levi) would make sangan trigger. This lasted for a month or two. Additionally (iirc): Tourguide was released in the last synchro set, but then xyz were announced and the price shot up into the sky lol
