Doesn't matter if your a child or an adult; when someone like Gandalf tells you a story you sit and listen. Period.

the amount of times iv used the line "you'll have a tale or two to tell of your own when you get back..." while trying to convince someone to come on a night out or something lol

This is a very minor detail from "The Hobbit" (book, film, and I've also seen it referenced in a video game), but it always makes me smile.

I think the funniest part for me was that the Goblin chieftain was named "Golfimbul".

Fun fact, the goblin king's name was Golfimbul.

Well, in the book Bilbo also had a time-piece (watch) to keep time. The anomaly of the Hobbits is that they're kinda like us human beings. They have a postal service, tobacco (never existed in Medieval Europe) and English tea (can't have that until England traded with the Orient). . But I did find that the movie took the perspective away from Bilbo unlike the book where it was mostly from his perspective.

Mostly because it's Tolkien's depiction of his childhood; english society around the turn of the 20th century

That's right. I just finished reading The Hobbit today and through the book that was the most noticable difference. I think that it was originally intented as a tale for children ( even if it's definitely different from the usual child stories). There are many other great changes/differences between the book and film, but I think this is probably the greatest.

What is lesser known is that the bodies of Golfimbul's heralds (even for an Orc chief he was so self-important that he had heralds) were found on the battlefield by a Hobbit who is only remembered by his surname of Hornbag. As any Hobbit would say he got the queer idea of taking the severed heads with the pipes still in the mouths to Bullroarer as a gift. He tied the broken-before he got to them, mind you-heads together and presented the thing to Bullroarer who gave a fearsome laugh as he plopped it on the ground and sat down as hard as he could. At that moment a digestive problem that occasionally afflicted him was felt and heard causing a most monstrous noise to issue from the dead men's pipes. In what is simple Hobbit fashion what were to be called the "Hornbag Pipes" was reduced to simply "bagpipes".

The way he said that was so funny. “…And the game of golf was invented.”
@SHHSFilmCluB10 жыл бұрын
Usually I don't see or imagine golf in a fantasy world like Middle Earth. But then again golf is a really old sport. Some people say that golf was invented in the 15 century or much older. and they mention the golf thing in the books.

Hobbits may have been peaceful creatures, but they knew that peace was neither free nor everlasting. When a call to action was needed, they answered it! Most Hobbit warriors were experts in throwing weapons like throwing knives, sharp stones, and sometimes throwing axes. They weren't big on bows because you need long arms for an arrow to fly properly, and for the most part, they lacked the stature and strength for melee combat.

this is what we with functioning eyeballs call character development. Nothing special or life-threatening, just a simple engaging conversation between 2 people. Bilbo's a dumbfounded cynic, Gandalf's a witty overlord

Now THAT I'd like to see as a series! Amazon should give Bullroarer Took his own adventure series! Buildup to this great battle, learning to ride an actual horse, carving a mighty shillelagh powerful enough for such a blow, and even Elves donating Elven arrowheads to the Hobbits that they turn into sharp sling stones! Just imagine it! An army of huge goblins charging to the Shire only to fall as Hobbit suddenly begin slinging sharp Elven metal at them with their hunting slings as Bullroarer sneaks into the Humans'/Elves' cavalry and gets to the head of the charge twirling his shillelagh club above his head with a massive battle cry as he runs over their ranks on his mighty steed, sees the king, gets a firm grip on his shillelagh, and swings it with enough speed and force to hear the goblin's neck split the air with a massive CRRRAAAACKKKKK!!!! as goblin blood spews all over and the head goes flying into the distance as the remaining goblins look in disbelief that such a small warrior could be so strong! They retreat in absolute terror!

Probably not too different to how Golf was invented in our own world, somebody thwacked a rock into a rabbit hole with his walking stick or cudgel and thought, "Hang on a tic, this could be a good game." Given the ancient origins of Golf with the Nordic peoples and the Scots a bit later on, I'd wager good money that booze was probably involved.

Indeed, The Hobbit however is not as the Lord of the Rings, the Hobbit is more of a child's story according to Peter Jackson.

I don't think they should've included the golf joke. Because It's hard to imagine golf being a known thing in middle earth. Somehow I just can't imagine Elrond on the fairway wearing those dorky golf clothes. 😅

"Well all good stories deserve embellishment." Yeah that preety much sums up lotr and the hobbit, both the books and the movies, everything is exaggerated, everything is ludicroulsy blown out of proportion. Its not supposed to make sense, its supposed to be entertaining. Tolkein himself confirmed that he intended for there to be no "morale or message" in the story, he merely wanted to entertain and "in places" move the reader. The movies work just as well, better actually imo, because they don't waste time talking about stuff that is irrelvant to the story than in the books were irrelevant stuff is packed full into the story.
