How do you pronounce it incorrectly? With regard to pronunciation, the story of middle earth was written by an English professor. His goal was to create a mythos for the British. He had his own pronunciation defined, but if you really wanted to default somewhere it would be more appropriate to default to an English or perhaps Gaelic pronunciation, rather than a spanish one.

Fun fact: In the books, Sam was wearing the Ring when he overheard the orcs talking about how Frodo was alive after getting stung by Shelob, the implication being that the Ring can act as a translator.
@TallisKeeton

@@nickcys5395 no, Sam could understand orcs becouse they use common tongue (of men) becouse the orcs were from different tribes and so used common tongue (though twisted), it was not becouse of Sam wearing the Ring at the moment. In the book the Ring has nothing to do with understanding of any languages - of orcs or spiders or anyone else. But in the movie they did it well to insinuate that only the magical abilities of Ring Bilbo is able to undestand spiders (and we also dont know if movie spiders talk or if they use telepathy), but the creators could avoided this disonance by just not giving spiders any dialogues, that way this movie would be more in tune with LOTR movie (not talking spider) and LOTR book (not talking spider), but becouse they did not cut the talking spiders from the movie it is also in tune with LOTR book becouse in LOTR book both Sam and Frodo can not understand the spider even when Sam put on the Ring. He only could hear voices from more distance than without wearing it, but not translating any language by it.

@@TallisKeeton This section from the book suggests otherwise: "He listened. The Orcs from the tunnel and the others marching down had sighted one another, and both parties were now hurrying and shouting. He heard them both clearly, and he understood what they said. Perhaps the Ring gave understanding of tongues, or simply understanding, especially of the servants of Sauron its maker, so that if he gave heed, he understood and translated the thought to himself." Also remember no one suspects the ring Bilbo found is Sauron's ring yet. They don't know it for sure until the Lord of the Rings when Gandalf throws it in the fire to see if the writing appears. But you can already see the negative effect on Bilbo as he is lying to hid its existence and how he mercilessly killed the non-spider creature he thought was trying to get the ring on the forest floor..

Dwarves have a complicated history with all other races and much of it is because they were somewhat alien to the world compared to Elves and Dwarves as they were made my Aule, not Eru illuvatar himself. They are generally thought of as greedy and avaricious and rightly so to a degree. It was a group of Dwarves that killed the very first elf who ever awakened, Elu Thingol, over a cursed necklace that they had been hired to place a Silmaril in. They lied about what happened later to their dwarven kin and caused a war
@parissimons6385
@parissimons6385 Жыл бұрын
Good comment. Going that deep into early Tolkien legendarium stories (likely in the Age of the Two Trees), then it can be added that the elves in Middle Earth did not always treat the first dwarves they met very well, hunting the Petty Dwarves for sport before learning that they were sentient beings. In the First Age, the murder of the Sindarin elves' leader, King Thingol, and theft of the silmaril by dwarves (who claimed that the elves refused to pay for their work) did not involve Durin's Folk. It was Durin and his descendants who were kings of Khazad-dum (Moria), and in the Second Age were very friendly with the Noldorin elves of Eregion, those elven smiths who helped make the Rings of Power (but not the One Ring) after learning craft from Sauron in the fair form of Annatar. But Thranduil and Legolas are Sindarin elves, and they have long memories of what had happened to King Thingol eons earlier, so they were not inclined to be friendly to dwarves, even if that First Age mess did not involve Durin's Folk. And Thorin Oakenshield is the prince of Durin's Folk thousands of years later, late in the Third Age of Middle Earth. This is partly why Legolas' friendship later with Gimli during the War of the Ring is both unusual and important as an example of reconciliation. And Gimli's devotion to Galadriel, the most powerful remaining Noldorin elf, makes some sense given the friendly history of the Noldorin realm of Eregion and Khazad-dum thousands of years earlier in the Second Age.

Fun fact: Bilbo told the whole crew about the ring in the books. Nobody thought it was suspicious and considered it to be normal as there were many magical rings that existed. Also, they left out a huge part about the Elves from the books on how the Elves caught the Dwarves and the fact that the Dwarves spent weeks in Mirkwood.

I think it’s worth knowing there are different “types” of Elves. It that might clear up some future questions if you wonder why Thranduil being referred to as King and perhaps not seeming as graceful and noble as Galadriel or Elrond. I think a good analogy comparing them to the “types” of the Men in the LOTR trilogy, is that Galadriel is like Aragorn, Elrond is like Faramir, and Thranduil is like Theoden when it comes to bloodlines. The destiny of the Elves was to accept the call of the gods to the Undying Lands in the west across the sea. Some made it, and actually lived and learned and sung with the gods in their own land, but others decided to stay in Middle Earth. - Thranduil is an ancestor of a group that stayed in Middle Earth and claimed a kingdom as their own. They are aware of the gods and their eventual call, but chose to stay. He’s kinda like Theoden… just sorta there lol - Elrond is a direct descendant of someone who once lived in the West, and Tolkien being the lover of bloodlines, gave a bit of genetic nobility to those who are descended from Elves that completed the journey. He has no Royal blood, but he has the rank and stature to be called a Lord. Maybe like Boromir or Faramir metaphorically. - Galadriel was actually born in the West. She lived with the gods. She learned from the gods, eventually journeying back to Middle Earth for various reasons. This is why she literally glows, striking all who gaze upon her with a true sense of awe. She is literally radiating the light of Two Trees she gazed upon that once lit the world, and has great wisdom and magical knowledge like foresight. She’s kinda like your Aragorn-noble bloodline and such. /endrant Cheers!

@ponder421 Жыл бұрын
I hate to be that guy, but Elrond absolutely had royal blood. He is a direct descendant on his mother's side of King Thingol, the king of the Sindar elves. Through his father's side, he is descended from the High Kings of the Noldor Elves in Middle-earth, and the lords of the 3 houses of Men.
@morothane
@morothane Жыл бұрын
@@ponder421 lol you’re fine because you are correct. I suppose I meant it as a means for Stef’s understanding. He indeed has royal blood, but would have no male connection to claim a kingship, no more than Aragorn would claim a kingship over Elves (stretching that analogy because of bloodline lol). And I guess to complement his reasoning for taking Lord of the Last Homely House as a title rather than “King of”. But yeah, I don’t at all deny my mistype by using “royal blood”

Remember the battle at the very beginning of The Lord of the Rings, where Sauron was defeated? He wasn't killed - - he's an immortal spirit. He was weakened, however, and his spirit fled into the forest, where he gradually regained strength and became the Necromancer. The sub-plot of this movie trilogy is to verify that the Necromancer is in fact Sauron regaining his old power, and what to do about it.

Beorn could transform at will in the book. The mistrust for dwarves was caused by Sauron, not only through subterfuge, but the rings he gave them awoken the greed we see in the movies, the dragon sickness. Aside from an incident concerning a necklace (which inspired the part in the movies), dwarves have only ever fought with orcs. They even got along well with elves, despite how they act towards each other, as there's a reason the door to Moria in the Fellowship of the Ring opened with the elvish word for friend.
@Frelzor

Many Dwarves were mistrusted way before Sauron gave them the rings, tbf. But you're right that many, especially those in Moria, also were friends with the Elves. The dragon sickness comes from treasure that has been hoarded by a dragon, and has technically nothing to do with the rings.

Nevertheless the Silvan population has adopted the customs and language of the Sindar. Forsaking their own Avarin tongue. It is a similar situation with Lothlorien.

A lot of people shit on and dislike these movies and admittedly nothing can rival the LOTR movies . 3 of the greatest movies of all time. That being said though I never understood the hate these movies got. I really enjoyed these movies . A lot of small details I really appreciated . First of all just being back in Middle Earth is magical, them showing the story Bilbo told in the beginning of LOTR about the trolls, the soundtrack is, again, one of the best movie soundtracks ever made and more so they do some tiny things that I absolutely love . Number 1. Anytime the ring is on screen the song thats always played in LOTR is played , the ring theme song if you will, and Number 2. at the end of the final hobbit movie when Thranduil tells Legolas to go look for Aragorn softly in the background the famous trio theme song plays in the background which only plays that 1 time through all of the hobbit movies and just brings you back to the LOTR story. It’s masterfully done. So yea. Nothing like the LOTR movies but still really great movies in my opinion

You had some questions about scent. As an outdoorsman and Appalachian (apple-at-chan) mountain man, if you spend about 3 days in the woods with no way to shower or bathe, you begin to pick up on synthetic scents like deodorant, cologne, perfume, aftershave and such. You can definitely tell when someone is doin laundry at a house nearby and also who is wearin freshly washed clothes. It's a lot like if you spend enough time on a ship, you can smell land and if you spend enough time on land, you can smell the sea. If you spend enough time away from humans.....you can smell humans. If you have the skills and physical altitudes, you can potentially be very dangerous to those who would be dangerous to you.

Ok, here's a bit of a very simplified nutshell explanation on the disdain towards dwarfs. The dwarfs are kinda viewed as the red-headed step-children of the creator god. The tension with the dwarfs as a race has to do with how the were created. The creator God in Tolkien's world is Eru Illuvatar. Eru is directly responsible for the creation of his 'Children' races The Elves and Humans. Eru has a class of lower gods under him called the Valar. One of those gods, Aule The Smith, is the creator of the dwarf race. But they don't have free will or thought yet. They can only do what Aule commands them to do, kinda like robots. Only Eru has the power to create life with it's own free will. Aule later pleads with Eru for their continued existence and for them to have free will like Eru's other 'Children' the Elves and Humans. God Eru says sure but they won't enter the world until after Eru's other "Children' races of Elves and Humans enter the world. The tension comes about because the Elves know this fact about the dwarfs, that they aren't essentially created as an equal race. This is why they are generally looked down upon by Elves.

Thranduil and Legolas are High Elves, those who went to, or were born in, the western Lands aka Elvenhome or Valinor. Wood elves were born in Middle Earth and either did not wish to leave or balked at the western coasts and remained in MiddleEarth, never learning the higher arts including magic from the Valar and the Maiar. After the War of Wrath when the Valar overthrew Morgoth, Sauron's BOSS, Thranduil and many other High Elves crossed the Seas back to Middle Earth to aid both the remnants of the Noldor Elves and those Wood Elves. Thrabduil established his kingdom in this time, becoming King because of his wisdom and skills as a Leader. BTW, the Dragon's he referred to were the Great Dragon's, servants of Morgoth. Smaug is a lesser descendant of those wyrms. Smaller, less magical and more obsessed with wealth.

Not quite correct. Thranduil and Legolas are Sindarin and had never been to Valinor. Thranduil was part of the court of Thingol, the king of Doriath and migrated East to Eryn Lasgalen at the end of the First Age when Beleriand was destroyed. The same is true of Galadriel's husband, Celeborn, who as also a Sindar from the household of Thingol. Though Galadriel herself was a Noldor who was born in Valinor and had beheld the light of the two trees, Telperion and Laurelin. In both situations, Thranduil became king of the Silvan Elves of Mirkwood and Celeborn became ruler of the Silvan Elves of Lothlorien, because the Sindar as much surpassed the Silvan Elves in wisdom and strength, as the Noldor of Valinor surpassed the Sindar.

Dwarves are also seen by the other races as "Greedy" for lack of a better term. The stones in the mountain, the king elf was talking about being interested in. That was another story that happened in the second age. Back when the king's wife was still alive, he had these precious elven stones he wanted made into a one-of-kind necklace for his wife and queen. Dwarves being the master craftsmen of middle earth, he went to them and made a deal to commission them to make it for him using these gems. When it was complete, the dwarf king changed payment... the dwarf king now wanted the remainder of the Elvin sacred stones as payment before he would hand over the necklace. When elves refused to hand over their sacred stones as payment, the dwarves kept the stones and necklace. When Elrond spoke of the Dwarves in LOTR part 1. He said "do we look to the Dwarves? They dig greedily in their caves caring only of their riches... they care nothing about the concerns of the other races." Even Saloman the White spoke of the dwarves digging too deep in Kazadoom, wakening the Balrog. There are other happenings between dwarves and the other races that enforced the idea that dwarves could not always be trusted. But the dwarves have also been done wrong on many dealings with the outside races as well. So, let's just say there is a lot of history.

I am quite new to your channel, but the reason things fall into the camera is the 3D for cinema, so people dodge. I believe u know it and want someone to point it out in comments, so u get more views or whatever. There I am, the answer if needed, or the comment if needed.

I wish people didn't judge The Hobbit through Lord of the Rings eyes. The Hobbit was written as a children's story. Although they share many similarities, they were written for two different audiences. Another great reaction, love how invested you get. And your happy which i think also makes the viewer happy.. contagious and all :)

That's not the fault of the audience, but the producers. It's literally a prequel to the movies and less an adaptation to the book. The movies want to be both epic and childlike, but kinda fails at both. If they survive falling down a mountain, being crushed by a giant goblin king, it just takes away most of the tension.

But the other writing by Tolkien filled in all of the gaps between TH and LOTR. The producers and writers used that detail to pad out TH.

The dwarves aren't disliked by everybody, they have a rivalry with the elves. They were great allies once, but the feud dates back to one of the greatest jewels ever created, the Silmaril and the necklace the dwarves made for it. It all comes down to greed and jealousy. Also Beorn doesn't hate dwarves like it's portraited in the movie, he's just not very fond of them but he has a grudging respect for them and is willing to help them because they are enemies of the goblins, as he is. Beorn is a skin-changer as it is called in the books and can change into a huge black bear at will.

That's true in general terms... but Thranduil and Thorin's family have a specific grudge with each other - King Thror refusing to give the white gems of starlight to Thranduil (there is an implied thought he wanted them because they were something to do with his late wife) started it, and Thranduil refusing to help aid the Dwarves after Smaug's attack.

They were disliked because, of their wealth, and only concerned with themselves and maybe because they were not made by Eru Iluvatar (God) but by the Valar Alue (the Smith ) - (lesser gods who made the earth) of whom Sauron was once a Miair (lesser god) of. Sauron, Gandalf and the Balrog were all Miair to different Valar. Read the Silmarillion, it explains everything.

I'm not going to spoil things for you, but the necromancer wasn't a thing in the books, he is later mentioned to be the reason why Gandalf left them in the book by Tolkien, but he was never actually mentioned in the book, and it probably wasn't him that is assembling an army. Same thing with Legolas, he is implied to have been there by the fact he is Thranduil's son, but he is never mentioned in the Hobbit book, and only is a character in Lord of the Rings. Azog should be dead by now cannonically, and Tauriel is made up.

All those scenes where objects are closing in on the camera - that is because these movies were filmed in 3D. While the 3D hype is over now and I can very well do without it, it was nonetheless an experience watching all three parts in their 3D version in the cinema when they originally came out.

Dwarves have quite a contentious history with many other races. An age-long, violent and bloody conflict with elves, have fought a few wars against a few peoples of men (such as at one point against the ancestors of the Rohirrim over another dragon's treasure hoard). Beorn however just personally dislikes their materialism and what he considers to be ignorance of the natural world. Dwarves tend naturally to greed more so than others, and the obsession with riches that Thorin's grandfather developed is a common risk with the wealthier dwarf lords, and such dwarves who fall into this have shown to have no scruples with almost any misdeed be it murder, theft or deceit as long as they aquire the wealth they desire, and so many distrust them for this reason. Dwarves also have it against them that they were they only race of the free peoples whose kin fought for Sauron during his first conquests, even though dwarves from Moria contributed with 60,000 men, several of the eastern dwarven clans fought for Mordor just as several kingdoms of men did, like Harad, Khand and Rhûn.

There has never been an age-long conflict between Elves and Dwarves, the sacking of Doriath in the first age is the only recorded war between them. Since then relations between the two peoples are on ice (sorry if you meant that by age-long conflict), especially between Dwarves and Sindar, the Elves who inhabited Doriath (Thranduil infact is a Sinda but most likely not directly related to the ones who lived in Doriath). An exception are the Noldor who lived in Eregion (where the rings were forged) who had very good relations to the Dwarves of Khazad-Dûm (Moria). I've never heard of a war between the Éothéod and the Dwarves anywhere, where did you read about that? Sounds interesting. I agree with you on the greed part though. Dwarves are just very stubborn and secretive about their own ways, as well as often suspicious of outsiders which makes diplomacy difficult and lets them come across as very self-centered and egotistical to other peoples.

@@Poggle_der_Geringere Yes, I did indeed refer to the age-long bitter sentiment between dwarves and elves only healed through Legolas and Gimli's friendship at the end of TA. The treasure hoard of Scatha the Grey Worm, killed by Fram son of Frúmgar in TA-2000. The dwarves of the Grey Mountains had a portion of their treasure stolen by Scatha and laid claim to it, but when demanding it back he only sent Scatha's teeth in a necklace and an insulting letter which erupted in hostilities for a time.

Beorn doesnt like dwarves because hes half beast and therefore a lover of animals - which dwarves are not. Dwarves are more ‘technological’, a bit like orcs. The mirkwood was formerly known as the greenwood, but when the ‘necromancer’ moved into the old elf fortress of dol goldur evil began to spread in it, but even the, as beorn says, the elves of mirkwood are wild and not wise like the others. So those elves cause trouble with enchantments in the forest. They dont like anyone which is why they imprison the dwarves but in these movies theres the issue of the jewels belonging to thranduil’s wife as an added reason. But as a general rule, dwarves are stubborn and rude. So no-ones’ too friendly with them. When gandalf refers to ‘the enemy’ he means sauron, which you know by now i guess. The ring is how bilbo understands the spiders - theyre speaking black speech, which is the language of mordor and of evil things.

The Orcs are EVERYONES enemies. So the "elves of the woods" may not like the dwarves...but they'll fight the orcs at all cost. There is MUCH Peter Jackson pulled from obscure parts of the book, and the appendices to fill out this film especially. Tariel is a whole fabrication (i.e., not in the book), but it's nice to see a badass female elf warrior. For that matter Legolas himself was NOT in The Hobbit book. Dwarves are generally NOT liked because they are so rough and focused on only themselves and their wealth. This film illustrates one of the issues lots of folks have with The Hobbit films. There is a LOT more reliance on CGI rather than practical effects (i.e., less Orcs in actual latex body suits, etc). When you watch closely you can tell the difference...the "practical effect" Orcs just seem "more real". I still find these films to be fun...and thrilled you are getting enjoyment out of them. Looking forward to your next installment. Have a GREAT rest of your week. (Love the Middle Earth Tee shirt)

Hobbits are very close to nature despite being camping in their cosy houses all day long. Contrary to Saruman, Galadriel suspects Sauron of returning to power and asks Gandalf to check on the Nine kings tombs... Obviously, their tombs were desacrated and the corpes reanimaed into Nazgul by then... Because of their rings bound to the One Ring. Tauriel doesn't exist in the book, they added her as a feminine token to add a love story that wasn't there in the first place. They even lied to Evangeline Lilly about the love story (she didn't want to be cast for one so they told her there would be none...) The things going to the camera; yes ten or fifteen years ago was the stupid fashion of bringing back the 3D tech of the thirties... Never worked then, never worked ten years ago either, despite the great effects, it costs too much for what it brings.

Actual geography lesson... mountains are never lonely. A single mountain peak in the middle of nowhere is either the center of a meteor impact site, or its a volcano, or its a bit of land remaining after water has eroded away everything else. Actual mountains are typically full continuous ranges caused by tectonic plates colliding.
