Tolkien's writings The visuals are much better, the pacing is much sleeker, production design is bigger, the newer supporting characters add great flavor to the proceedings, and the final scene is lots of fun seeing the Dwarves utilize their skills Evangeline Lily as the Elf Tauriel is one of my favorites especially her interactions with Kili blooming a potential love story but it pales in comparison to Aragon and Arwen's By far the best portion of the film is Smaug the dragon himself; he is expertly voiced by Benedict Cumberbatch giving such a commanding presence The scene between him and Martin Freeman as Bilbo is a true battle of wits seeing who is more fit to handle the treasures of the world without letting greed get in the way The cliffhanger is one of the best to leave such a strong impression too Yes this isn't a perfect adaptation and fans will truly notice so many key alterations and differences made, there's also questionable plot lines and dialogue Bilbo is also not focused on entirely at least until the last act but the big change here that feels earned is him being afraid of the Ring the more he uses it But take it on its own merits as a film it outways 'An Unexpected Journey' being bigger, darker, more mature, action-packed, and setting up a perfect climax

A HUGE amount of the extra content is actually from the appendices in the books, including Gandalf's side of the story. And Thorin definitely needs more development as he was pretty thinly developed in the book
