I'm glad they remastered Battle of the Five Armies in particular because one of my main big issues with it is that it looks so fake. Glad PJ finally had the time to go back and make what he originally intended.

I like how the image isn't as soft anymore. Definitely appreciate the added clarity and detail in the 4K. But I'm not sure the new color grading works every time. Kinda takes away from the feel/atmosphere in many scenes.

But think about this for a sec: watch the other video where they show the improvements on the lord of the rings trilogy and tell me: don't these changes in color bring it closer to the color grading in the original trilogy??? I mean, since the release of the hobbit, I always felt like they graded the colors to be too contrasty and too colorful. The original trilogy was SO different. But now, if you watch them in a chronological order, they all look like they belong in the same universe. They have the same color grading, and the same amount of detail, clarity and even contrast. It's what they tried to do and I think they succeeded!!

Have they added a faint haze around the edges at the beginning when bilbo is explaining about the dwarfs, dale and Smaug to give it a fairytale like look? I swear it wasn’t there on the Blu-ray

I highly disagree with you. What made the Hobbit franchise so amazing was that colours were vivid. It made the world come alive. In every aspect is the Hobbit franchise superior to The Lord of the Rings.

@@dreadlock375 No because the original Hobbit releases were rushed over stretched films that should have been one movie. Its common knowledge that peter jackson wasnt happy with the films appearance and over reliance on CGI. These movies have no heart and the rushed production is the culprit. Thankfully the visual issues were refined but the video gamey feel to everything leaves a lot to be desired and these movies pale in comparicon to the originals.

IMPORTANT : this is not a proper comparsion, scenes used as the old blueray are actually from the trailer, its really misleading - 4:00 this looks like a drastic change but it isn't, it's just a trailer footage. Look up the scene - Woodland Realm and you'll see for yourself

I enjoy the films a lot more now, I couldn’t get into them because I kept focussing on the bad CGI etc. The 4K release has really fixed that!

Some of these look better, some look worse. Real mixed bag. That Gandalf and Galadriel shot definitely looks worse. Though I do seriously appreciate all the blurry shots that are made clearer

the resolution is great and the colors are occasionally better but we still don't know how to use HDR with taste. There's a paranoia about contrast you can't have any highlights or shadows. We have to show everything in the shadows so there's no mystery and we'll mute all of the highlights that could make the picture really sparkle. And some of the color choices are bizarre the shot of elrond at 8:30 is using a green filter on the entire shot. how about just black and a nice bronze for the armor. why does it have to be puke green?

Okay so the original scene at Rivendell I didn’t mind for some reason. I always think of Rivendell as soft and a bit glowy in the golden light, so I didn’t mind a bit of over saturation there, but it looks fantastic either way.

I have never been a 4K guy. I mean: HD is already clear enough. But OH BOY!! Peter Jackson totally changed my mind! Now I need to waste a lot of money on a 4K TV, 4K Blu Ray, and lotr 4K and The Hobbit 4K right away!!

The thing with this is, they didn't JUST upscale it to 4K, they individually went through it scene by scene to adjust the colours- fixing the tint, saturation etc. It looks SO much better now. The original was way too soft, had way too much bloom and in some scenes just had an odd blue tint.

I hope you get an oled or miniled, it will look best on there. Dont buy a cheap 4K TV it is not just about the resolution! And yes this remaster is amazing. What were they thinking with the instagram filters in the original? It was so bad, like watching a cartoon.

Stay tuned for upcoming minileds coming 2021 it might be the next best buy; best picture for reasonable price without drawbacks of oled technology, and oleds are getting better too, overall it is a very exciting year for TVs this year so it will be worth waiting a couple more months for the newest models.

I thought I was going crazy for a second. You are right! He didn't recomposite the movies at all. He only changed the color grade (and obviously there is more detail now too). Any scenes where things are shifted - is because it is comparing the 4K to the original trailer, not the theatrical version. Weird.

7:26 ... why are all of the Elves dummies with blank faces? Even in the remaster the Elves are still generic NPC models; I know in LOTR they had CGI armies but they were more careful to add in the faces when visible. This is just baffling that this passed multiple releases.

4K now has a more neutral color grading compared to the cool originals. The lighting now seems more consistent with an emphasis to even out dark zones.

So you’re not going to get the full 4K resolution picture til you go out and buy the 4K set. This isn't accurate at all. I just compared it to my blu rays of the original and what this video is claiming is the 4K is the same as my blu ray version and what they are claiming is the 'original' is footage from the original trailers in which the color grading hadn't been completed yet.

If you’re referring to the reds in the skin tones, it’s more natural that way. The red in skin tones was done away with all the makeup due to the cameras.

Ah wow! These look so much more 'natural' now that bizarre blue/red look to most scenes has been removed. That shot of Thranduil seems to have a completely redone background and Lake Town look far more gritty. Bringing all 6 films closer together tone wise is a great decision.

That is basically what they have done, Samuel. It's tonal and saturation differences to make the 6 Middle Earth films more consistent with one another

Is it just me ore does it look like they made it look more washed out in the 4k version. Sure looks higher res but drained of color.

Yup. They definitely muddied up the picture. Sometimes it looks more natural, but many times less so with no contrast.

About the resolution it's not so different cause it was already shot in digital with 5k or 4k resolution and a stereoscopic rig, but with better software tool, they make the color and contrast a bit more vivid and natural, log color profile is really close to what analog film scan was. The thetrical version realy have fake Looking issue especialy at high frame rate, it make everything look like video game.
