Minera Limeworks, known locally at the time of its operations as ‘Y Calch’. The Limeworks constructed many variations of kilns during its operation period. The most impressive were the two Hoffman Kilns. One has been demolished many years ago with all traces now gone, another however still remains, albeit in a poor state of disrepair. The chimney has been long demolished, but it’s kiln structure has survived, with it’s location area not needed for other uses when quarry operations replaced lime burning from the 1950’s, it has also been half buried which has also helped its remains being intact.
My great grandfather worked the Hoffman Kilns from the 1890s till his death in 1923. A newspaper report from 1906 featured the ‘MINERA BURNING CASE’ when a local tramp was mysteriously found with third degree burns in the kiln by my great grandfather. Details shared in the video.
