Honda's CVCC engine shocked the automotive industry at the time of its introduction and helped jumpstart the brand's fortunes in the American market. Honda went from an also-ran in the car business to a force to be reckoned with, and they can attribute at least part of this success to CVCC Technology. In this video, I'll go over what CVCC technology is, why Honda decided to develop it, and what it ultimately did for Honda and the industry as a whole.

Best engine in any car I've ever owned. Put 65k on it before any repairs (dirt in the carburetor needle & seat). Sold it at 80k miles; buyer put 20k on it before doing brakes. Put another 40k then did a clutch. Car got 37mpg combined with no computer or fuel injection - only car that got better mpg was my parent's Rabbit Diesel

Very good, Honda have been world leaders in engine technology for many many years, i did not know about the Jaguar V12 using Honda technology to gain better MPG.

Wow, after all these years I never knew exactly how my 82 Honda Accord worked. I just took that 3 barrel off & put on a Weber 33/36 DGEV carb on & the car came alive! I wished I could've understood it better to tune it better & dial it in.

The video was impressive! The technology remains valid. I’d like to see the easy conversion information concerning the Impala. Some of us use carbs still and engines do go far bigger than giant 350CIs. Loved the effort Red.

The CVCC engine in my Mom's 78 Accord was super problematic and I've often seen that engine listed as one of the worst engines of all time. Sure it made emissions and fuel consumption good, but the overly complicated vacuum system and carb's sensitivity to different gas mixtures made it quite unreliable.

Yes the carbed and heavy vacuum engines were headaches to troubleshoot. Modern tuners found out ways to delete all of the vacuum lines with the “wire tuck” craze

I've got one still, plus a few 1st gen civics. The carbs are copy cats and reliable, but the vaccuum is as bad as it can be. The 1st gen community calls those cvcc engines boat anchors for good reason. Nearly everyone blew the head gasket.

In the fall of '78, after owning several used vehicles of varying descriptions and vintage, I was ready to buy my first brand new car. I needed something small with good gas mileage, and my budget was no more than $6k. I looked at pretty much everything on the market in the US at that time which met those parameters. The small cars made by the US automakers did not compare well to the imports IMO, so they were out of the running pretty quickly. I looked briefly at Hondas but decided they were too small, plus there were some stories going around about problems with the engines and overall QC. The idea of a Honda car was still a new thing at that time, especially in the US, and they hadn't yet built up a lot of trust or a loyal following. They were still thought of as primarily a motorcycle company, and there was some doubt about how long they were going to be able to stay in the auto market, especially in the US. I ended up buying a new Golf/Rabbit. I was able to splurge for the midrange model with a few minor options, but it had power nothing other than steering and brakes (I think). It had an AM radio, crank windows, stick shift, and of course no AC, which was pretty typical at the time even on new cars, especially econo cars. The AC option alone would have added ten percent to the price of the entire car (around $600), so it was a budget buster and I had to skip it. Houses and cars without AC were common then so it wasn't a big deal. I was able to get out the door just under $6k. The VW was peppy and served me well for two years until I was making more money and could trade it in on something bigger and a little more luxurious (and with AC).

I had a Civic that had a bad transmission so I bought a smashed up CVCC car for parts. I decided to switch out the engine as well but after many hours to get it to fit I discovered the CVCC car front end was a few inches longer so the engine wouldn't bolt in. If I remember correctly the fenders were longer too on the CVCC

"WHEN CONGRESS PASSES NEW EMISSIONS STANDARDS, WE HIRE 50 MORE ENGINEERS AND GM HIRES 50 MORE LAWYERS" -- MR. SOICHIRO HONDA...THIS IS THE MENTALITY THAT MAKES ME LOVE JAPANESE CAR COMPANIES AND FURTHER DESPISE LARGE AND CORRUPT CORPORATIONS. INSTEAD OF LOOKING TO DO IT THE RIGHT WAY THEY LOOK TO SEE WHAT THEY CAN GET AWAY WITH. NO DIFFERENT THAN OUR LOUSY POLITICIANS.

No it wasn’t. Honda continued to produce it until other emissions regulations came along. The only way it intersected GM was when their CEO said it would only work on “toy cars” and Soichiro bought a V8 Impala, refitted it with CVCC heads and proved it would pass emmissions tests without cats. It ran hot, but the message was clear for a lab mule. GM, Ford and Chrysler did everything they could to stop the Japanese because they knew they were in deep crap.

Some of the content was even more confusing than clarifying. If your speach content taken the book, probabbly I will just read that book. Overal 6/10

Its hilarious how the world actually considered converting the industry to rotary engines and they found it was complete garbage. I also love how american automakers dismissed honda then honda basically took their cars and FIXED THEM. The ultimate F U in the industry 🤣😂

The rotary engine essentially bankrupted Mazda. They dumped billions into its development and never got anything but massive troubles from them. Sad too because Mazda’s car and B series trucks were as good as anything produced by the other Japanese companies. Cash strapped Mazda got in bed with FoMoCo and their line turned to poop 💩. One Mazda executive recently stated that their relationship with Ford was the worst decision they ever made and was regretting until this day.

@@prevost8686 even without ford in the mix the rotary engine has alot of weak points for the engine to fail eventhough it has “less moving parts”. The whole engine has to come out anytime a rotor seal fails. And while they are the most efficient in terms of power/liter, they are also the least efficient in terms of gas milage which isnt appealing to the american market. Interesting design, great on paper but not viable long term relative to piston engines. Honda ias basically perfected the 1.6L and its not difficult to find one with over 300k miles on it
