The Honkettes were Lynyrd Skynyrd's girl backup vocalists. They were Leslie Hawkins, Cassie Gaines and Jo Jo Billingsley. They were formed in late 1975 by Ronny Van Zant to add to the band's stage show and sound. This is a short mini documentary on them.
#lynyrdskynyrd #classicrock #southernrock
Ronnie Van Zant's childhood friend Gene Odom's KZfaq page. He tells some great Skynyrd stories. Gene was on the plane the night it crashed. Here is his KZfaq / @hangingoutwithgeneodo...

I graduated in 1977, in June. I was doing lead vocals in a band called Cliques and like everyone else, we were covering LS, songs. Sweet Home Alabama was everywhere and that's what we opened with. I will NEVER forget hearing about the crash that day. I literally was stunned and felt like a friend had died. The 70 s had a lot of awesome music but we lost a lot of awesome performers too.

That’s probably because most bands don’t sound good without the magic of their studio engineers. Skynyrd was one of beautiful oddities that was made to play live. They sound great because they were masters at playing off of each other’s strengths and were smart enough to construct the songs to showcase that. Of course they had badasses engineering and mixing their live performances too.

One of my favorite things about Skynyrd is that they never sneered at Jesus and actually acknowledged Him here and there. A moralist could quibble about lukewarm faith, but given the excesses of 70's rock I'm happy Ronnie is on the record as remembering there is someone up above.

@@richardpierce7819 Roadmaster was pretty much over by the early 80s. They began in the early 70s as a band called Pure Funk, and evolved into Roadmaster. Roadmaster bassist Toby Myers went on to play with John Mellencamp from 82 through the late 90s. Rick Bennick played with Henry Lee Summer until he passed away a few years ago. Keyboardist Michael Read is still playing around Indianapolis. They were pretty hot in their day and put out several great albums - their self titled debut, Sweet Music, Hey World and two or three more. They went on tour constantly. I saw them open for Journey before Steve Perry was ever in the band, circe 1975 or 76. You should do a KZfaq search for their music. It's there.

There is another documentary called Uncivil War where he gets asked about it and admits that he lied about it and had apologized but didn't want to talk about it. A year or so ago a guy that was one of the sound engineers done an interview and said he was sitting beside Cassie when the crash happened and said that right before impact she stood up to try and see what was going on and he thinks that's ultimately what cost her her life.

Cassie Gaines was killed instantly according to local rescuers. Her neck was badly broken and her brain stem cut. Billy Powell was traumatized and actually spoke to the other girl who was conscious too but he was suffering from head trauma and got them mixed up. You have to realize how hard the impacts were and what it did to their brains. Gary Rossington was saved by road manager Dean Kilpatrick who pulled a door and other debris off of him. But Dean was also killed on impact. Others who were able to walk were slipping in and out of reality.

Love your comment about these three gorgeous ladies "putting the icing on the cake". That is definitely a true statement. It is a crying shame this whole band has died so young. Gary was the only one to make it into the 70s, and Ed to his late 60s. I am pushing 70 years old as of November 2024 and I really don't feel that old, even though I really am. There was a time I had every Skynyrd album and cassette tape. If I couldn't find the prerecorded cassette tape I made my own. At home or on the road I had Skynyrd blasting through my speakers all day long and into the night. Never getting tired of any of their music. May they all rest in heavenly peace.

I know from a personal source the reason why JoJo wasn't with the band when the crash happened. Didn't have anything to do with getting cleaned up but the sexual relationship she had with guitarist Allen Collins. Allen was married and Ronnie didn't want this mess to go public and Allen's wife Kathy finding out. JoJo wanting back kept calling trying to get her way back in the band. When she finally reached Ronnie, Ronnie handed the phone to Allen telling him to clean up this mess he created. Ronnie later gave in to allowing JoJo to return but she would have to catch up with the band at their next gig. Unfortunately that never happened as the plane went down. Later while attending Ronnie is funeral Lacy ( Ronnie's) father walked up to JoJo, reached down and grabbed some dirt and smeared it across JoJo's mouth & face saying, " Here, taste some of the dirt that made you famous... ". JoJo never admitted to the affair even after accepting god into her life but those around the band knew otherwise.

I believe most of this story is accurate,as I've heard it from several sources and they were not internet commentors. The problem was...Ronnie was furious with both of them(Ronnie, always herding cats),but Allen was essental while JoJo was not. The situation had been going on awhile and the fact that only the female would be sanctioned had really pissed Ronnie off for being stuck in the middle;everyone took their problems to Dean...or Ronnie. He was not kidding when he told Allen to clean that mess up. Other crazy stuff was going on with Leon and associates back in Jacksonville. The local law enforcement hated the Skynyrd crew for a looong time. I got an earful from sheriff about it,and that was because I was harassing their office to find out who had vandalized Ronnie and Steves internments, which was decades later. The sheriff got so mad at me that he called our local sheriff and told him to shut me up. Resentful assholes. Ronnie's state of mind, regarding the open animosity from all sides within his hometown is evident in the last song he ever recorded. I feel for Ronnie,he was surrounded by toxic, resentful, ungrateful leeches. His so called friends STILL work any grift they can to make a dime off of the relationship with Ronnie. Like it or not,Artimus is the only one righteously paying homage to his brother, although he should prolly stop talking, too. Shut up and play👍

To me, Jojo was every inch a Honky Tonk singer, both in style and temperament. She was wild as hell and always laughing, I think Ronnie saw her as the soul and spirit of the Honkettes. Cassie was a wonderful, sweet and bright lady. She was small town normal - kind and generous. A truly great singer, who's lack of rock and roll ego was quite uncommon in those days. Leslie - petite and radiant, she looked and sang like an angel. She was a gifted, beautifully clear, melodic soprano but she could belt it out. Leslie put everything she had into her performances, every night, she would ask me how she did. The answer was always the same, she was perfection, I never heard her miss a note! Ronnie never told me how he chose the Honkettes. He was certainly intuitive but if he selected these three on intuition alone then someone was smiling on him because together, their individual styles were a perfect blend that covered all the tonal ranges. They were 3 beautiful, talented women who were a lot of fun to be around. They definitely deserve their place in musical history as Rock and Roll Royalty! - Crazy but magical times with some exceptional people... Thanks for the video

I am a die hard, lifelong, Skynyrd fan and would love to hear some credible information about Steve Gaines. There are just so many myths and flat out lies that surround Skynyrd lore but I'd love to know more about Steve Gaines. I firmly believe he would've become the American Clapton. He could write, sing, and play. He had it all. Such an absolute tragedy. It just seems there's such very little credible information regarding Skynyrd for whatever reason.

@@SimpleManGuitars1973 We had all heard about Cassie's brother for quite a while before we met him, she wasn't a pushy person but if you had ears, she made sure you knew about Steve. Cassie was Steve's big sister and she was extremely proud of him, for good reason as you've pointed out. She knew Steve would be the perfect fit to restore the three guitar line up and much more. That's why she was so relentless at lobbying Ronnie to give her little brother a chance to jam on T for Texas. Ronnie wasn't thrilled with the idea and he wasn't an easy man to convince. He wasn't an educated man but he was highly intelligent, an independent thinker and stubborn as hell. Ronnie wasn't looking for someone's little brother, they had been looking for a "star", and a lot of them came up for what was basically a live audition on T for Texas. If you saw a guest guitar player showing up to jam on TfT, he wasn't there for fun, he was looking for a job. Cassie was beside herself when she finally managed to convince Ronnie to check Steve out. I remember that night really well, I'd seen a fair number of the pretty well known guitarists get up to try out, only to end up doing competent but uninspiring blues solos. Steve was a really nice, friendly guy, unassuming and a little shy. Like Cassie, no rock and roll ego. As Steve took the stage for that first time, what struck me was that he seemed fearless, despite everything that was at stake, he was totally in his element, even on someone else's stage for the first time. It was obvious right away how tight and musically intuitive he was, he wasn't following, if anything he was leading. Gary and Allen were definitely feeling it because the 3 of them were in lock step from the first beat. Then he whipped out his slide and started wailing with a note perfect searing solo. No one had done that before, all the others had played it safe in my view, laying back letting Gary and Allen do the heavy lifting and then popping in some generic blues solo. All three of them were hot but Steve just ripped it up. I think we could all feel that something momentous had just happened while at the same time, not quite believing it. The next day, Ronnie and Gary and I were sitting at a booth in the hotel restaurant, Ronnie wanted to talk about Steve's performance but he was actually focused on his suitability as a potential recruit. Ronnie saw in Steve what everyone else saw, probably more so and seemed to be looking for confirmation or a nudge. So I took a chance and piped up to tell him that in my lowly opinion there was no comparison with Steve compared to the other previous try outs over the last couple of years. I just blurted out, "This is the guy, Jesus, Ronnie, he played slide on T for Texas, no rehearsal and he nailed it". I glanced over to Gary who fortunately seemed to be in full agreement and waited for reaction from Ronnie who was sitting beside me. I half expected him to tell me to piss off and mind my own business but he just looked at me and nodded. Whew... I want to make it crystal clear that in no way do I believe my intervention was determinative or even influential in Ronnie and the others decision to hire Steve. Ronnie didn't need me to tell him anything, I was just a fly on the wall, echoing what he already knew - that Steve was the ultimate perfect fit for Lynyrd Skynyrd.

@@JumpingJesusMurphy Awesome dude. He's by FAR my favorite Skynyrd player and honestly he was the overall best player ever in the band. His precision and musicality was much more advanced than the relatively simple blues rock approach that Gary and Allen took. Plus his voice was incredibly soulful. I always salivate to get my hands on any Steve bootleg I can. I've always wondered if they played a full set at Day On Ths Green or just Sweet Home Alabama and Freebird. I LOVE the Asbury Park show from 77 and have watched it countless times. Also the Japan shows and England ones as well. Any bootleg with Steve improvising is musically priceless to me. The sky was the limit for him. I Never Dreamed will always remain my favorite of all time from Sknyrd because of his solo. Blistering. He CERTAINLY inspired Ronnie and the boys to newer heights as well.

@@SimpleManGuitars1973 I agree, Steve Gaines was an exceptionally talented musician, he could do it all, write, sing, play anything with strings and was exciting to watch on stage. You're absolutely right, Steve did inspire Ronnie and the others. Right from the start, there was a change in the atmosphere of the tour that was palpable, an excitement and renewed enthusiasm that filtered down from the band and permeated the whole entourage. I think Ronnie was not only wise but incredibly generous to be willing to share the spotlight with Steve, if anything, he was pushing him towards it. I read somewhere that Ronnie, commenting on Steve, said something along the lines of, One day we'll all be working for him! Regarding how Steve compared as a player to Gary and Allen, I tend to I take a broader view. The world is full of unbelievably talented guitar players. The reason we don't know them is because they're not capable of, or haven't yet done what Gary and Allen did, which was to create a unique sound and co-write a catalogue of music that we're still talking about almost 50 years later. I don't think there's any doubt about how much Steve would have enhanced and influenced Skynyrd's musical direction but he literally walked in to a highly coveted spot in one of the biggest, most popular bands in the business. He certainly had to chops to do it but in a way, he also had a freedom of style that the other two didn't. The fans all knew Gary and Allen's parts note for note and Ronnie and the audience expected to hear that every night. Gary had a wider musical palette than may have been apparent, he could play just about anything. One day at sound check, I heard music from Jeff Beck's Blow by Blow album suddenly coming out of the P.A. I turned around and it was Gary, just noodling around but nailing it. As guitarists, Gary and Allen were focused on creating parts that were right for the song and the combination of their guitars, in my humble opinion, was as recognisable and crucial to Skynyrd's sound as Keith is to the Stones.

Thanks. I try, but there are so many stories out there, I try and take mine from earlier interviews from the person themselves. A persons mind can change and believe things so you will find discrepancies in interviews that are say, 20 years apart. One thing I can say is I do not use any AI or wiki for my information. I also say that you have to have an open mind and with some of these people I doubt we will ever know the whole truth about them. Appreciate you watching and your comment.

I was in my Navy electronics training in Millington Tennessee and one of my instructors, we went to his house for barbecue on his fireplace mantle had some awards he was an original member of Lynyrd Skynyrd but he got drafted. They did send him a copy of the debut album while he was in boot camp. He had that on his mantle as well. He also took Charlie and Robbie and I that Free Bird was about Dwayne Allman. For the life of me I cannot remember his name. But in Millington Tennessee he was an instructor in fundamental electronics and he was a 1st class Petty Officer.

@@dominiccase6846 .. he was the drummer until I believe the third release then Artie came in to replace him. There could very well have been short term band members Ronnie really liked who weren't made known to the general public prior to 1973. Here's a tidbit from my life: I distinctly recall seeing the first album displayed in a hippie record shop and wondering who the heck this band was. The place was lit like a cave restaurant and so I couldn't see the smaller print pronunciation guide below their name. Also, consider that maybe--just maybe --this guy you knew somehow acquired these awards and might be duping people into thinking he was once a band member. Similar ruses have been successful until the con artists slipped up and got caught. A number of books exist about LS. .. skimming through the indexes, if there are any, may jog your memory.
