The Horns of Caltrain
The Nathan P2 horn is the "voice" of Caltrain. Here is a collection of horn videos of about 2/3 of the revenue fleet running today. Also included are the unique sounds of Locomotives 920, 921, and Bombardier Cab Car 120. Not included in this video: 119, 504, AEM-7, and Stadler EMU.
I am not expert on the air horn subject, but Caltrain seems to have had a long history with horn issues.
The SP's signature horns on the commute was the M5. Initially, the CalTrain commute fleet of 1985-early 2000s used K5LAs. Noise complaints along the line resulted into a switch to P2s.
Their location has changed through the years, from the roof to behind the pilot. The current location for most of the fleet apparently requires quite a bit of piping hence the long and often wheezing honks. The location also attracts dirt, and as a result there are many fouled horns particularly on the gallery cars.
The P2 isn't exactly a favorite to most people, but I enjoy it when there is a delay of the second chime, see: 7:23, 11:42, 11:59, 22:58, 26:04
If the rumors are true and most of the remaining diesel fleet will switch to that "European style" horn seen on two of the MPI F40s, then I will certainly miss this unique sound of Bay Area transit.
Corrections welcome.
