One of the most shocking executions of the Tudor period saw Queen Anne Boleyn facing a French swordsman inside of the Tower of London. However she was not alone in the brutal case to bring about her downfall. Along with the Queen, 5 other men were executed accused of treason and sleeping with Henry VIII's Queen. But George Boleyn was Anne Boleyn's brother who was accused of sleeping with her, and for this he was shockingly sentenced to death.
George Boleyn was a talented courtier and ambassador and he was very well liked by Henry VIII, however when Cromwell was tasked with finding the King a way out his second marriage, George Boleyn fell from grace too. The Boleyn's had risen to prominence following Anne and the King's marriage, but no one would have anticipated the Boleyn's downfall. George was sentenced to death after being accused of sleeping with the Queen, and for this was then imprisoned at the Tower of London. He was then taken for his execution on Tower Hill, and he made a long speech to the crowd before he had his head taken clean off by an axeman.

Just a note... George's wife Jane did go on record during his trial to support the charges against him. Joke was on her though as she was later charged with assisting Katherine Howard (Henry's Queen at the time) to cheat on her royal husband. Jane was found guilty and lost her own head as a result.

That is a complete lie. She is not even mentioned as one of Anne’s accusers it’s just been assumed by some later historians. Modern historians mostly believe she was innocent. Three of Anne’s accusers are named and the fourth one is said to be “one maid more”. There’s zero reason to believe that maid was Jane.

You know, I heard that the Church of England was born from Henry VIII’s codpiece. Now, as terrible as that sounds, it was true. When he no longer wanted to be married to his queen, he’d accuse them, chase one of the ladies in waiting and marry them. Thomas Boleyn was a prominent member of Henry VII count, where he rose to a level of importance due to his own abilities. He was very intelligent, spoke many languages and was familiar with European courts. When Henry VIII came to the throne , Henry found Thomas equally useful, He was frequently sent as ambassador ,representing England. Thomas Boleyn was a high ranking noble in his own right .

This is one of the flaws of the show The Tudors, portraying George as a closeted homosexual, a wife beater, and an arrogant man of court just like his father who got everything solely because of his sister. While influence of his station no doubt assisted, what records show that George could’ve easily made a name for himself - he -and everyone of that period- didn’t take into account the unpredictability and violent nature of the king, who had slowly become his father’s son - a cruel man with a weak hold on power and it was only by killing his own people could he keep it.

A major reason for including George Boleyn and the claim of incest was to support the legal charge of witchcraft against Anne, as well as treason (for adultery). If Anne was convicted of witchcraft, that gave grounds for declaring the marriage void from the start (as she obviously enchanted Henry into marrying her and doing many of the other things that had angered many other people and states). As Catherine of Aragon had already died, this gave cover for Henry to remarry cleanly and rebuild relations with the Catholic powers (and it also deprived the Princess Elizabeth of legitimacy).

@stuartwald2395
@stuartwald2395 Жыл бұрын
@@spookyxstylist I agree that she was not formally charged with witchcraft, and many of the more graphic stories in that vein were only raised decades later as part of attacks on Queen Elizabeth. There was a subtext present at the time, however, including from Henry VIII, that Anne had "enchanted" him. Also, while many did profit from the fall of the Boleyn family from their position as power-brokers, this could have been substantially accomplished just by the death of the Queen in disgrace; George would have had to withdraw from court like his father actually did, but no further revenge was taken against the persons of the surviving Boleyns in their modest retirements. The only reason to include George on such a unique and shocking charge (of incest) was to expand the moral taint against Anne beyond "mere" treason and adultery.

Back in the day it was more accepted that men had other women, especially kings. The mistress would be very well looked after. The wife on the other hand was property to serve and obey her husband. I was reading a story about England the other day and the author kept referring to England , as" Merry old England " Then later on I started reading about the reign of King Henry V111 and the hundred thousand people he had killed and their methods of execution which were horrible ,then the reign of his daughter Queen Mary ,often referred to as Bloody Mary because she had thousands of people burned at the stake for being protestants and later her sister Queen Elizabeth I Who executed her cousin who was the rightful heir to the throne of England Mary Queen of Scots it suddenly began to dawn on me that Merry old England wasn't so merry after all . The history of Europe is a lie it's like death spread from out of Europe ,you can see this on a world graph to encompass the whole world .Look at Africa,Asia ,The Americas .In 6 or 7 thousand years , billions of People have been murdered ?

@GonzoT38
@GonzoT38 6 күн бұрын
@@user-hu5iw4lb4x I think you read too much into that post. Yes, he was uncharitable in the characterization of a royal courtesan, but I understand what he/she meant by the Icarus reference. In a time where you are surrounded by people who are quick to dispense with life over squabbles and easily-concocted accusations, it is a legitimate warning to keep distance from said power structure, unless you have the army to challenge it properly. That statement doesn't excuse the tyranny of the powerful, which I think is where you got hung up on. That condemnation is stipulated at this point. But that doesn't change the FACT that engaging in the roulette these royal courts engaged in, can in fact get you killed. To handwave that away and just retort with the equivalent of "victim Blamer!" is the height of naiveté, as all these martyrs of the Tudor time found out the hard way. There were women who rejected the courting of that madman for instance, and lived a long and productive life as a result. That what the Icarus reference ultimately implies in this context. It doesn't convey admiration for Henry VIII, as you incorrectly (in my respectful opinion) inferred. Cheers.

Beautiful biographic documentary, always marvelous narrated by someone I never could, unfortunately, know his name. Apart from this, if George Boleyn was a man so handsome as shown between 1:12 and 1:27, I am not surprised at all that his brother-in-law (King Henry VIII, one of the most evil men ever walked on Earth) felt deadly sick with jealousy to the point of ordering his execution under false charges. In case it was realistic the scene of George's execution in one of the movies about the Tudors, where it is shown the executioner touching several times George's neck on the block with an axe for increasing his suffering, I can only wish that the King has in Hell a Prometeus-like punishment when chained on the Caucasus; I mean, during the day an eagle ate Prometeus' liver and during the night the organ was regenerated to be eaten again next day... and so on... I don't think we can claim Henry as a "Christian". He executed 70 thousand people, had two of his wives murdered and destroyed the monasteries of England and Ireland and stole their lands and wealth for his own use. His first wife Katherine of Aragon was certainly a Christian woman. Her grave in Peterborough Cathedral is venerated today and always has fresh flowers. Henry planned a huge tomb for himself, he stole the marble for it from Cardinal Woosley. However, when he died he was just put into a basic grave, the marble he stole, was used in the grave of Admiral Nelson.

@@connoroleary591 Yes old king Henry certainly enjoyed killing people.What we would describe as a psychopathic monster now. I never knew Catherine of Aragon was buried in England. Yes and what he did the monastery order in on both islands was truly barbaric.

The best reason i have heard why anne and george might have commited incest was so that the baby would look like a boylen. If i was about to lose my head because i could not get pregnant by an infertile man, and the baby had to look like one of us, and i had a brother.... i can kind of see the thought process.

There was enough evidence to suggest that he was truly accused. He and his sister had a lot to gain if she had become pregnant and had a son. It’s believed that that was their intention.

That would only work if Henry was able to rise to the occasion around the same time as George. If its true that Henry was impotent, no way could Anne risk getting pregnant by another man.
