In a frontal collision, at bumper height, cars are designed to absorb as much of the energy as possible, while keeping the passenger compartment relatively intact. If the nose of the car goes underneath an obstruction, this protection is lost.

The ides was that it would deter anyone from breaking in if they saw cloths on the line, They had almost completed their journey and going over a sharp angled bridge that led into the town,when they met an articulated trailer,the cabin part negotiated the bridge but the trailer part swung around flattening their car. the husband was decapitated poor man,but mercifully would not have suffered, his wife suffered s broken arm ,the two kids escaped with minor injuries but it must have been horrific for them. They never showed any mental affect or elde were very good at hiding it, If only he had not gone back to hang out those two tea towels. they wouldn't have met that truck right on the bridge,if only,I knew the people well, a lovely family, poor truck driver he wasn't speeding.

@@tommytompkins4564 Not really, back then it was the main highway on the gulf coast from Mobile to New Orleans know as Hwy 90 and still is used today. Hwy 90 was replaced by Interstate 10 that runs from Jacksonville FL. to California just as did Hwy 90 that was a two lane road i most parts.

I just commented above wondering about the hotel she stayed in. I was thinking it more likely the old Edgewater Hotel that was next door to the mall, demolished in the 70s to build the now gone Sears.

That car was going too fast and that boy did not know how to handle that Buick and back then they would run like a son of a gun you thought you was in an airplane on the ground one little iota and he lost control of that car and that was it😪😪😪😪🙏🙏🙏❤ Lord have mercy so sad

@C A Would have to slow down if sprayer vehicle ahead of semi was driving even slower, possibly stopping.

Trucker didn't use any brake lights and may not have even had working rear lights. He caused it.

@@davidb2206 As narrated, how could it possibly be the truckers fault. He didn’t brake because he didn’t have to. He slowed down by down shifting. It’s a bit of common sense not to follow too close to a big truck as that. He said that the driver was seen passing by at a high speed. He shouldn’t have followed so close; he shouldn’t have been speeding and the truck driver was not responsible because he slowed down. Any surrounding drivers MUST be careful when near a very large vehicle as that truck was.

@@sdavis5001 Did any of the rear lights work on the truck? Were any on? Probably not. Nobody would expect that kind of a slow down without some indication of it. You HAVE TO factor in other drivers' expectations and reactions when you are on the roads, at all times.

@@sdavis5001 working tail lights are required by law so yes the truck driver was in violation.

true, but even that probably wouldn't have saved them. a heavy ass old buick slamming into that truck at that speed meant a very small chance of survival for ANY of them. the fact that the car slid under the trailer is what saved those kids lives... plus a lot of luck.

Yes, I used to load/unload trailers for N.E.M.F. One day, at our Springfield terminal (Massachusetts), I arrived at work with a sawz-all - including a special metal-cutting blade - and attempted to cut all those annoying bars off! I was so sick of them. I thought they were there simply for the reflective strip so I decided the trailers would be more, I don't know - aerodynamic or whatever. I started making some serious sparks, cutting into the first. A bunch of truckers had clocked in and saw what I was doing so they wrestled me to the dirt and pried the sawz-all out of my hands. Can you believe I was put in handcuffs over this?! It was an outrage! I descend from a signer of the Declaration of Independence and they fought me to the ground and confiscated my legitimately bought tool, locking it in a safe. Ungrateful S.O.B.'s, the lot of 'em.
