We all know about the Mongols, the Turks, the Huns and other marauding Steppe peoples, but did you perhaps forget about the Scythians? It would be reasonable to do so, given they're not in CK3, but their descendants are, in the form of the Alans.
The Alans are an interesting culture to play in Crusader Kings 3, on account of their strange traditions. They're simultaneously specialized for mountain warfare, and use horse archers, who are awful in mountains.
I've played a little campaign here as Taus, the Mercenary Alan fighting for the Abbasids, but finding his own path for his people. It's interesting to realize, but often times, ethnogenesis can come from something as simple as settling a few mercenaries in a region and them forming a community, and in this campaign, I seek to simulate exactly that.
These are the Horse Archers you forgot about: the Alans.
Enjoy this Crusader Kings 3 Gigachad Story.

I think the reason they made Alans Byzantine is cause by this era, Alans and Georgians were like, best homies, so culturally, they'd have fit in with the Georgians, who are Byzantine, better than with, say, Persians or Tajiks

Have you ever considered a gigachad story in the Fallen Eagle mod? There's a lot of potential especially with migrations, which you seem to enjoy as much as I do For example, I once managed to take over all of persia as the magyars after migrating south, then I converted to Mandaeism and beat back the caliphate

My two favorite parts of steppe history are that 1 nobody from the outside can understand who is who. Were all the people called scythians actual scythians? Not really. 2 for some odd reason steppe nomads loved to steal names for prestige. "200 years ago the bulanid clan or whatever held lots of land and prestige so now i will rename my clan to bulanid even tho i have literally no connection to them" was a surprisingly common sentiment. Both of these make anthropologists cope and seethe. The alans btw are probably not scythians. They were probably vassals of the scythians that moved around eventually reaching the caucuses. There were also other groups that were called alans like some invaders in the rhein during the late empire and apparently they settled in spain but again we are not sure about any group of steppe peoples. The term peoples might even be itself incorrect since steppe life was very nomadic and fragmented. As long as you could communicate with someone they might aswell be part of your tribe

I imagine by this time next year the Alans would be far more fun to play as by that time you can start as a landless mercenary company as Alans and you could potentially settle wherever you want to. Also, the next DLC will drastically destabilize the Khazars in the 9th century start date as the changes to the legitimacy system will drastically change their situation, making them both fun to play, while also making it easier to break free of them as a vassal. Historically, shortly after the CK3 9th century start date, the Khazars destabilised, when this occurred their former Pecheneg tributary and their allies took advantage of the situation to invade and take the former lands of the Khazars, in the process the Alans took the opportunity to break free. Over the course of the following 200 years the Alans would wind up taking over the entirety of the Caucasus Plains, to only then lose the territory when the Mongols showed up.

The scythians are a Proto-Turkic group of people, as more Turkic group of people migrated to scythian lands they got assimilated/mixed with them. But it is hard to know something when talking about nomads since they dont leave anything behind that we can look for clues but in modern day genetic studies does help a lot when dealing with these tricky situations
@Tarkusarkusar
@Tarkusarkusar 4 ай бұрын
I’m not sure that calling Scythians proto-Turkic would quite be right, at least genetically. I’d argue that Scythians and Turks are two distinct ethnicities that certainly did mix, but indirectly, since by the time large numbers of Turks went west, Scythians themselves had mostly already assimilated into other cultures or become Alans or other descendant peoples. Nonetheless, the two certainly share a sort of cultural heritage as fearsome horseback pastoralist nomads that brought much change to the regions they eventually settled in.
