I have a 96 coupe lt4. It's been rebuilt, torqhead conversion and coil packs. C6 ecu. Brand new pilot sport as4, corsa exhaust. Torch red, or please arrest me officer red. Just did the weather stripping. 67k miles. She was a single owner car, garage kept all her life. I'm having an absolute blast driving it.

Craig, good point. The convertible LT4 cars are great fun to drive. I didn't mention the Firehawks since they weren't technically factory built cars, but they are pretty awesome. I think SLP also built some 30th Anniversary Camaros with the LT4 also, didn't they?

I test drove a few LT1s and a few LT4s and was sold on the LT4. It's like having the rev-happy nature of an import engine with the low end grunt and sound of a good ol American V8...Best of both worlds!
@VetteSource

Agreed, the low end power of the LT1/LT4 engines coupled with the ZF six speed is addictive and easy to get in trouble with. Plus that sound of the larger cubic inch V8 at WOT can't be beat. Saw your video about the C4 Corvette hidden features. Well done, it looks like you're enjoying your Vette they way it should be👍.

I saw a youtube video about the LT4 c4 1996 engine. Some 200 engines were dyno tested, the results were the engine produced between 360 and 390bhp in standard tune. They already knew the 97 car had only 345bhp, so quoted the LT4 at 330hp in 1996.

Got my LT4 in 08 and had it for nearly 10 yrs. Regret having to sell to pay some bills and I basically kept it nice for the next guy. lots of driveability upgrades but basically stock motor. I built a custom sound system for it but often drove with the music off and windows down. It had limo tint and muffler deletes and sport front spring when I got it. Was my first American car after coming,to the US and I did a lot of reaearch and spent a year looking for the right one. I got the fastest car you could buy for the money. The seller told me ‘it’ll do a burnout for an entire block’. That sealed it for me😁 Loads of torque in any gear but you can still redline it and it just kept pulling. Same torque curve as the original Gen III LS motor which makes me think the LT4 was meant to have the Hotcam from factory but they reigned it in just enough so it wouldn’t beat the new C5. That was a rule at GM! Lots of fun and I learned a lot from being in the club, a lot about vettes, Chevy cars and US automotive history in general. I was having emissions system problems when I let it go and had just replaced the entire system. It was just fast enough to get yourself in trouble and just old enough to keep you guessing😉 I would get another one. A C5 Z06 would better on paper, but just not the same charm as the LT4, with its modern electronics but old school style and attitude 👍🏼

You know, even though the two engines are very similar, there are quite a few differences The LT4's additional power comes from higher compression pistons, different heads, revised camshaft, roller rockers, and a different intake manifold. @Mike-zf4ev Жыл бұрын
Hi, after watching your videos I am confused regarding my 92 C4. When I bought it 2 yrs ago, I was told that the engine was swapped. The LT1 was replaced with the LT4 along with the automatic changed for the ZF 6 speed and also the Dana 36 changed for the Dana 44 differential. I know this because of the bolt pattern on the differential casing, with help from KZfaq. It has the 2 bolt and not the one single bolt in the center. This car was born an LT1 auto as stated on the build sheet and window sticker, which I have. As I am not a mechanic and know little about the vast knowledge of corvettes, I took their word for it because the manifold has the distinct red powder coat. Anyway, when you mentioned that the LT4 does not have the EGR valve it made me question. I took a further look and there it was, the EGR valve. So, my first impression was that this was not an LT4 and that the manifold was just coated red. Then, when you opened the oil cap and showed the LT4 stamping, I opened mine and there it was, the LT4 stamp. Maybe you can shed a little light on this given your knowledge of corvettes. I looked to find the original owner, to no avail. I was told by the person that sold me the car, I'm the third owner, that the original owner was a GM employee. Also, the fuel pressure regulator is on the opposite side. Talk about confusing. the car has 55350 miles on it and is in excellent condition, runs great. Your thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again for any help you can offer. I commented on one of your videos previously regarding this car but not to this extent.

They probably used the GM Performance Parts LT4 intake. GM offered an LT4 conversion kit through their parts department. Those intakes had the egr passages because many of the cars that received these conversions, were originally equipped with egr. I have a 1997 camaro SS that was originally an LT1, but I converted it to LT4 with this intake, heads, and crankshaft from an Lt4.

I shipped it to phoenix & would love to drive it more, but trying to keep miles down on it. Now has just over 11,000 mi. on it. Next to my 55 belair it's my fav. Like i said wanted to keep miles down on it, but it's hard not to drive it. What's your opinion on not driving it as to resale someday? when I bought it the plates said july 2001, I have the orig front 2 tires & other than weather checking & old age they look new. also have orig air filter & it's clean as a u know what. 2 big thick owners manuels in great shape & the small one in D condition.

Hi Wayne, that's a great find and story. I understand the compulsion to keep the miles low on the Corvettes, but personally I love driving them so it's very hard for me to save them for the next owner. I find a good compromise is to drive it on those nice weather days and keep a detailed mileage, usage, and maintenance log to pass along if/when selling. You'd be surprised how much a potential purchaser will value documented use of the car versus low mileage because it tell the cars story and proves its honest. Thanks for the comments👍

Thats an interesting swap. I have seen it done to a few other cars. One of my other subs has a 96 LT-4 in his 92 IIRC. Best way to tell if it's an LT-4 to start is to check for that EGR block off plate, cylinder head part number, and roller rockers. You can spot the last two by just pulling the oil filler cap.

I'm looking into possibly purchasing one of these. 54k mile all stock collectors edition. I've had a few lt1 fbodys in the past but mostly ls powered stuff in recent years. I'm also kinda leaning towards a c5 6spd possibly. I'm more comfortable with the ls engine platform far as working on stuff but not a huge fan of the trans axle setup c5 vettes have. What would you pick between the two?
@VetteSource
@VetteSource 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Marshall, thanks for the question. Both platforms C4 and C5 have really great attributes and things about them that stand out. With that being said, I prefer the less complicated electronics package in the C4's that aren't as failure prone as C5 electronics. As far as drivetrain goes, the LS is hands down simpler to work on and can create power much easier than the LT-1 or LT-4's but has the added complexity of the transaxle setup. For every day comfort and power I would go C5, but for a fun driving experience that reminds you that you're in a Corvette go later C4. Of course with the one you are considering being a Collectors Edition, I would pick that all day long. The Sebring Silver looks awesome on the C4👍
@marshallwarden4240

Yeah I really like the LS platform & have the ability to tune them myself with hptuners & I'm actually pretty good at it. That has also been weighing on making my decision. I think the CE car would be a good investment over a plan jane c5 though. Mostly just want a fun weekend cruiser me & the wife can go places in. Autocross would also be fun on occasion. We typically go to LS fest in Bowling Green every year & they have a fun autocross event I'd like to try out.

I am sure there have been dyno tests conducted over the years, but can't seem to find any mention of results. I will say that the seat of the pants feeling you get from the LT-4's is much stronger than what you would expect from 330 HP. It feels closer to the upper 300 HP range.
@davedavis775
@davedavis775 3 жыл бұрын
Yes you can find many owners have put their LT4's on chassis dynos. You can see the results over at the Grand Sport Registry website. The figure pretty well corrected for driveline parasitic loss match up with what Chevrolet claimed. Modified engines that have been stroked or bigger cams result in more power. Stock LT4's are right in line with the factory power figures.

The LT4 was an underrated motor, and is more powerful than the LS1 in the C5s when tested. I’ve seen videos and articles of people talking about the LT4 motor and only few actually made ~330 HP while others were making much more completely stock; Closer to 360 on average, with some even reaching 390 horsepower.

What's the reason why there was no automatic LT4? LT1 at4 vs ZF6 apparently at4 wad faster by a second
@VetteSource
@VetteSource 2 жыл бұрын
I suspect it had to do with the higher RPM capability of the LT4, along with the increased HP and Torque. With the numbers not being that far off from the LT5 of the ZR-1, I think the engineers felt more comfortable putting the ZF and Dana 44 behind the engine. I remember many customers wanting to order an LT4/Auto when they were new, but we had to keep turning them away.

I bought a motor out of a 96 corvette to replace a blown one in my Z28 of the same year can I expect a power increase? I know it shouldn't be much and also how will I be able to tell if its an LT4 or not thanks in advance guys
@VetteSource
@VetteSource 3 жыл бұрын
The C4 LT1 of 96 is rated at 300 HP, 15 more than the same year LT1 Z28, so you may feel a little more seat of the pants power. The easiest way to identify the LT4 visually besides the red intake and Grand Sport throttle body is the lack of an EGR valve, and it will also have roller rockers instead of stamped steel rockers which can be seen when you remove the oil fill cap.

People that say to junk older cars just for a blown engine are usually exhibiting the group think mentality. As long as the body of the car is sound and it hasn't been ravaged by rust, there's no reason not to mechanically refresh when needed to keep them running for decades. You'll get a great sense of satisfaction knowing you kept it going and have a classic to cruise in to boot.

Wayne, an LT-4 equipped Collectors edition coupe with that kind of low mileage and in top notch condition with no previous body or mechanical damage can bring mid teens to low twenties depending on the type of buyer. At the higher end of the valuation, expect it to take some time to sell. If looking to sell quickly, pricing at the lower end in the mid teens will get interest from dealers looking to make a profit on holding the inventory. In 1996, the LT-1 was only available with the automatic, and the LT-4 was only available with the ZF six speed.
