The Hour Before the Dawn is a 1944 American drama war film directed by Frank Tuttle starring Franchot Tone and Veronica Lake. It was based on the 1942 novel by W. Somerset Maugham. Some would say this movie helped ruin Lake's career. It was not a commercial or critical success.
A beautiful Austrian refugee in England--who is also a Nazi agent--marries a scholarly English pacifist. He lives near a secret military base she needs to get information about so she can help in Hitler's planned invasion of England.

When you're up to your neck in alligators, it's hard to remember that your initial objective was to drain the swamp. Same for being a pacifist when the enemy is bombing your estate.

I wonder if THE HOUR BEFORE THE DAWN got short-listed for a Best Special Effects nomination for the bravura bombing attack climaxing the film. The visual effects were supervised by Gordon Jennings, head of Paramount’s special effects department. He did a mighty fine job, as usual.

Your post is so disturbing, karin. Millions dying in the Second World War “for nothing” is terribly antisemitic and racist. Knowing that Hitler wanted to wipe out anyone who was not Caucasian (preferably white Anglo-Saxon) and those who were mentally and physically disabled. It cheapens those that died to wipe out such evil.

There are evil people in the world who are generally kept under control by normal people around them who will use force to stop them from hurting others. The key to understanding the point I'm making lies in recognizing that the life of the murderer is not more valuable than his victims. He must be forced to stop so he does not murder. If the murderer refuses to stop murdering when pleas are made to him, and he cannot be stopped when lesser force is brought to bear upon him, the force applied must include killing him since he will not stop otherwise.

@@gardengnome3249 'An eye for an eye' is a command from an authority. What I wrote is an explanation for why the death penalty, and lethal force, are justifiable.
@gardengnome3249
@gardengnome3249 Жыл бұрын
@@deezynar The justifiable is in your eyes. Who is to say you're right? My mother in law was injured with shotgun pellets in a payroll robbery at her work and the shooter took advantage of turning state's evidence and got a lighter sentence. According to my brother in law the shooter actually smiled at my mother in law when the sentence was handed down and he only got 3 years. They did not have witness testimony back then. Don't you think there were several relations as well as my mother in law who wanted him dead? Thing is we are civilised law abiding citizens within a culture that would rather pay taxes for his very long term incarceration than murder him by "legal" means.
@deezynar
@deezynar Жыл бұрын
@@gardengnome3249 The first two sentences of your last comment ended you. You do not understand logic so of course you missed the objective proof that I provided in my OP. As for your MIL, her case was an injury, not a murder. And civilized people support the death penalty for murder. Those who do not, believe that the life of a murderer is more valuable than his victims. That is not a subjective claim. If we weren't speaking of murder and the death penalty, you would see that clearly. For instance, if you suffered damages from theft, accident, or natural disaster, you would demand that the insurance company compensate you completely for your lost property. But there is a large caveat involved with capital punishment. Cops and prosecutors must be kept honest, they must understand that they will bring serious prison time on themselves if they falsify evidence, and an innocent person is convicted. That should be true of any charge, but in cases involving capital punishment, they need to be kept extremely aware of the personal consequences they will face if they railroad an innocent person.
@gardengnome3249

@@deezynar Are you trying to convince me you are correct or boring Nothing ends me except my death. If my inlaws and myself had been able to we would have adjudicated that peasant criminal to death by ourselves. We then would have carried out that sentence. Not a similar punishment. Just death. That is how vehement we were. Objective, subjective meant stuff all to us when it is one of ours. A fellow I helped run a little athletics club asked me one day if I would help him meet some justice on his wife's brother. This person was fiddling with the girls he was offering work to. The girls would meet at his warehouse and pick orders for a few dollars per hour for spending money. My daughter, 12 years old, was one of those girls. That Saturday afternoon was his last with all the girls. he left the state. The police were informed in the state he moved to. I have lived and worked in many countries and seen "justice" served in many forms. Your waffle is just that to me. Too many words for too little result. To be totally honest I did not bother reading it all either. Might I also add your opinion is just that. It is not the end result.

Why, because Russia interfered in America’s civil war? Wait, that didn’t happen! The Russo-Ukrainian war began in 2014 with a pro-EU coups d’etat. This is neither the business of America nor NATO. America ought to secure its own borders rather than using taxpayer funds to interfere with a Russo-Ukrainian-Donbas conflict.
