Located in Nha Trang, a seaside city on Vietnam’s southeast coast, this residence is one of three vacation villas-the Stone House, the Timber House, and the Glass House-each enjoying a privileged location. Carved into a 420-square-meter hillside plot, it boasts a unique ocean view, overlooking the bay and mountains in the background. However, the high construction density of the street threatens future sea views if not properly anticipated. Thus, the primary design goal was to optimize this viewing experience early in the conception stage while considering future residential density in accordance with local urban regulations.
From a vacation rental perspective, the aim was to maximize hosting capacity and entertainment experiences. The property is accessible from the front street via an exterior staircase leading to the higher deck level.
The house sits on a large “podium” to gain enough height to manage sea views over the street and the residences in front. The pool, an additional extruded volume higher than the deck level with three overflow sides, creates a direct visual connection with the seascape and minimizes the visual impact of the nearer environment. The house is composed of two main elements: a high-ceiling volume glazed in the front and stone-clad in the back, open to the deck and facing the ocean and hills, and a suspended timber box with large, openable louvers.
Considering the site characteristics, with the cliff in the back and the lower street level, the program is spread vertically across multiple levels. At street level, there is a garage and a large home cinema at the back of the pool with an underwater window allowing natural sunlight through the pool, along with technical and spa spaces. An intermediate level, facing the cliff, features a bedroom suite with a private garden and outdoor bathroom. The deck level hosts the main space, merging the dining island, kitchen, and living room into one seamless connection with outdoor spaces. The high ceiling allows for a mezzanine floor, turned into a bedroom suite with panoramic views over the kitchen. The timber box hosts the first floor with two bedroom suites.
Locally sourced stone blocks connect the construction to the rocky environment, while teak timber cladding enhances the "suspension" effect by wrapping the entire first-floor block. This material palette effectively delineates the volumes.
