Takeaways from tonight's episode: 1. Sydney, Chris A., Lynne, Chris C. and a late arriving Rich (long time no see) in the house 2. Chris Alo aka "Grumpy Face" 3. "Death Alley River" 4. "Damn, where's that jacket?" 5. "It's an honor just being nominated" 6. Three Deep Purple dudes vs. three Deep Purple Dudes 7. "...walking like a hobo or whatever the fuck the line is!" 8. "How many panties were thrown on stage?" 9. "Good thing I dropped my F bombs before you came on" 10. "Lou Grahaming it" 11. "That's the candy ass one?" On tonight's topic, I cant rate these two albums as I have not heard either one in their entirety..

As for "Here I Go Again", I do think the original more direct version captures the 'loneliness' aspect better. Remember seeing them perform the song on German TV show Na Sowas! in front of a stunned audience, not accustomed to seeing longhaired dudes in tight jeans up close. Also had a nice piece on them in Kerrang! from the video shoot, with that legendary balcony shot of Coverdale sitting down. 'Hobo' merely flows better when sung than 'drifter' as a lyric, simple as that, I think. Not David's best but it is what it is.

I love the boogie keyboards on ‘Bloody Luxury’.. being a fan of 50’s Rock’n’Roll. I remember hearing a guy shouting out for ‘Lie Down’ at Snake’s gig at the Birmingham NEC in 1988 and I was still on that page,as a Whitesnake fan. S&S’s first four songs are excellent, the original ‘Crying In The Rain’ has a blues sensibility courtesy of Bernie Marsden and Paicey keeping it measured behind the kit. Get ‘A.I’ to drop in “drifter” instead of “hobo” and that would be my favourite version of ‘Here I Go On Again’. Rainbow ‘Straight Between..’ ‘Death Alley..’ ‘Stone Cold’ ‘Tearing Out..’ & ‘Eyes On Fire’, have always been head & shoulders above anything else on that album. In short the two albums in discussion would make two great E.P’s!

I love both of these, but there's something about "Saints And Sinners" that puts it over the top for me! I am a huge fan of "Straight Between The Eyes", but I think that the tracks overall are more memorable on "Saints And Sinners" I weirdly enough actually prefer this version of "Here I Go Again" to the 1987 one, but that is probably due to me just hearing the 87 version over and over again lol

7-1 from the panel.in favour of Rainbow is pretty conclusive of their views. I like both these albums and there are a couple of songs on Saints that I like more than anything on Straight, but in general I find the latter Rainbow album more consistent so I'm going to agree with the majority of the panel here and yes, Blackmore's guitar work is fantastic.

Both featuring awesome deep tracks that deserve more attention. Bring On the Night (Dream Chaser) and Eyes of Fire are as great as any of the Rainbow hits. Saints & Sinners being the last album of the snakes to feature the classic line-up. Ian paice delivering awesome grooves non-stop.

Not a close one for me. This is probably my least favorite Whitesnake album of the early blues era. "Ready an' Willing", "Come an' Get It", "Love Hunter", and "Live in the Heart of the City" are far superior in my opinion. Then "Slide It In" really crushes it. So, I don't have any connection to this one. The songs that were carried over to the "87" album are better as well. Now, "Straight Between the Eyes" is my favorite Joe Lynn Turner album. Great production and strong material! Easy win for "Straight Between the Eyes".

For me it has to be Saints an' Sinners even though SBTE has some fantastic highlights and wonderful soloing from Blackmore. Saints An' Sinners is a poignant album in some ways because, with the possible exception of the UK version of Slide It In, it's the last time Coverdale made the music that he truly enjoyed not just creating and playing but listening to as well. Additionally, while Jon Lord was always underutilised in Whitesnake, if you compare Crying in the Rain and Here I Go Again to the 1987 versions his presence is sorely missed on those re-recordings. There may be fewer standout classic tracks this time around, but I think Saints an' Sinners is one of the most consistent and enjoyable Whitesnake albums!

"Straight Between The Eyes" is so underrated. Great hard-rock album with great Blackmore's solos. "Eyes of Fire" is easily one of the best Rainbow songs. Joe Lynn Turner is really great singer, and I love his late vocals even more. His solo albums is also awesome, especially "JLT", "Usual Suspects" and "Second Hand Life". All Rainbow and Deep Purple fans MUST check it out.

I have listened to both of these albums A LOT. Rainbow is my favourite band and I love Whitesnake, so it was a tough choice. I was a little surprised that Rainbow won 7-1 - I thought Whitesnake would be your pick. I rank Straight... higher than Saints... mainly because of Ritchie´s guitar work and the three songs Death Alley Driver, Stone Cold and Eyes of Fire. By the way, I saw JLT perform Death Alley Driver at a concert Feb - 20 in Sweden and he still does that song brilliantly!

I love both albums, but Whitesnake's Saints &Sinners is the first Whitesnake album I ever got back in 1988 at ten years old. I actually got it by accident back in 1988. I saw that it had Here I Go Again so I grabbed it to buy it on cassette tape. At that time I had no idea that the version of Here I Go Again that I knew was a different version than the one on Saints & Sinners . I actually ended up loving the Saints &Sinners album eventually, but the first time I listened to it I did not care for it. Saints & Sinners is my vote because of nostalgia reasons.

Oh, one more thing. I agree w/Chris Alo about the Saints an' Sinners' version of Here I Go Again. The hobo line totally kills that song. I like the '87 version better too. I'm good with either version of Cryin' In The Rain. But I made a similar comment on Martin Popoff's Contrarians episode on Whitesnake. For me, this one's easy. Whitesnake pre-Sykes, in my opinion, was an incredibly middling blues rock band that definitely didn't add up to their individual parts. Just a sleepy pub band trying too hard to hold on to the '70s. By contrast, Straight Between the Eyes is a high-energy album, melodic, has great instrumentation, and a killer album cover. Hands down Rainbow for me.

@@LarryFleetwood8675 Maybe that wasn't fair. I just came to early Whitesnake later in life, after already hearing 1987, and other early-80s hard rock (UFO, MSG, AC/DC, Rainbow etc), and pre-Sykes WS just seems like an incredibly average blues rock band to me. I listen to Gary Moore's Corridors of Power and think, "Now THIS is what WS should've been doing in the early-80s."

Have to disagree with a lot of people on this - I MUCH prefer the original version of "Here I Go Again". If I never heard the re-record again, it would be too soon - but I would listen to the original

I think I'd give the edge to Rainbow on this - I saw them on this tour with Scorpions and Riot opening - what a great show!
