My first time watching The Hudsucker Proxy (1994). Tim Robbins and Paul Newman deliver in this thought provoking Comedy brought to us by the Coen Brothers. I'd never heard of this one, but it proved to me once again I need to watch more of their films. I hope you enjoyed my The Hudsucker Proxy movie reaction & commentary

This is one of those unregarded gems. The Coen Brothers have a unique take on comedy, don't they? I especially love Jennifer Jason Leigh's brittle, glassy take on Katharine Hepburn. And of course, Paul Newman is always worth watching.

The real fun of Coen Brothers movies is that you never know when they're going to throw all rules of storytelling out the window. This is maybe the all time champ of that.

I love this movie and quote it frequently (“you know, for kids!” “Consider this my resignation, effective immediately!”) and nobody ever knows what I’m talking about. This was my fave Tim Robbins movie until I discovered Shawshank. And ugh, the music in this movie…absolutely incredible. So glad someone else is now an appreciator of this rarest of gems.

Robbins is also in "Short Cuts" (1993), along with Lily Tomlin, Robert Downey, Jr., Julianne Moore, Jack Lemmon, Fred Ward, Frances McDormand, Buck Henry, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Tom Waits & many others. As for "...Shawshank...", you need to see 1979's "Escape From Alcatraz", which is where "...Shawshank..." got a lot of its ideas. King clearly saw "...Alcatraz" or read the non-fiction book it's based on before he wrote the "...Shawshank..." story.

The music (by Coen's regular Carter Burwell) was an arrangement of themes by Aram Khachaturian, including the popular "Sabre Dance" (Hula Hoop scene) from his ballet "Gayane" and the Adagio from "Spartacus".

"You know, for kids." Fun Fact: Both products made by Norville Barnes (Tim Robbins), the Hula-Hoop and the Frisbee, are products of the Wham-O company. Impossible Hudsucker Fact: Joel Silver wanted Tom Cruise to star as Norville Barnes, but the Coens insisted on Tim Robbins. Historical Fact: The death of Waring Hudsucker (Charles Durning) was inspired by a real-life incident. On February 3, 1975, Eli Black, the CEO of the United Fruit Company, smashed an office window with his briefcase and jumped to his death from the 44th floor of the Pan Am Building in New York City.

Bruce Campbell devotes a chapter to this film in his autobiography. The highlights are his telling Sam Raimi "I have to go work on a real movie now" (though of course Raimi himself had co-written the film with the Coens, which was how Campbell got involved in the first place), and his amazement that Jennifer Jason Leigh showed up on day one with her multitudes of complicated dialogue down cold.

I love this movie, this is the 2nd reaction to it in as many weeks. The cinematography is to die for, every frame is like a work of art. Jennifer Jason Leigh is great in everything (watch her in "Single White Female") and you can't go wrong with the Coen Brothers. Try "Raising Arizona" to see more of their humorous side, it's a classic. Great reaction.

I highly recommend the Coen Brothers film "Hail, Caesar!" It's a sort of love letter to the 1950's era Hollywood, specifically the Hollywood fixers that kept actors in line, and out of trouble. It stars George Clooney and Josh Brolin, and it's excellent.

I mean to tell ‘ya, Jennifer Jason Leigh should have gotten an Oscar nomination! I swear if they had filmed this in black and white, you would never notice that it’s 1994 instead of the 1940’s. How perfect was her accent, her timing, her look? That is someone who understands the character she was given. I wish we could go back in time and get her that nomination she deserved! Did you know the gears and mechanisms in a watch (or clock) are called complications? Perfect technical use of the complications to match the character’s complications! Love your reaction. Again!

Happy New Years! I'm so glad you found the comedic dialogue enjoyable. My Coen Bros love developed since childhood seeing "Raising Arizona" as a kid, watching "Hudsucker" in a theater with a friend (I was so excited! Paul Newman?! Bruce Cambell?! Jennifer Jason Lee?!) was wild because I was the potentially annoying movie geek but my friend loved it just as much.

To me this is a style tribute to Frank Capra. "O Brother, Where Art Thou" is a tribute, of sorts, to Preston Sturges. Preston Sturges wrote and directed a film in 1941, "Sullivan's Travels", about a film director who wants to direct a dramatic socially relevant film based off a novel (called "O Brother, Where Art Thou"), to ultimately learn that sometimes those people with the hardest lot really need a good comedy. I highly suggest watching the Frank Capra film "You Can't Take it With You", starring Jimmy Stewart. It has similar spirit to Hudsucker Proxy, if substantially less dramatic cinematography.

Oh, my goodness, yes! The Coen brothers filmography is a wonderful journey! There are many famous ones others will tell you about, but a couple of their lesser known ones that are among my favorites are "Barton Fink" (1991) and "The Ladykillers" (2004; a remake of a 1955 film). I hope you enjoy them!

Great reaction to a great movie that is severely underrated and misunderstood by its contemporary audiences. LOVE this. Re: Coen Bros - you've seen most of their comedic output, so if you want to wade in (and you should!) be prepared for much of their other work not to be as funny, though several of their movies are flat-out masterpieces (Fargo is as good as everyone says it is and should have won the Best Picture Oscar it was nominated for).

@@CasualNerdReactions it’s so clever, funny, warm, zany and completely unexpected. I promise it will end up in your top 5 of 2023. But the biggest draw is, NO ONE has reacted to it yet, and you will in effect be introducing it to most fans of movie reactions - and many reactors will follow.

The hula hoop is one of those things where the idea is so basic that you can't really say anyone "invented" it, and it's possible cavemen even did it. But in 1958, the Wham company patented their plastic weighted hoop, which the movie is playing off of.

"I quite like the dialogue in this movie." Welcome to the Wonderful World of the Coen Brothers. 😊 "Without Buzz with the fuzz, how will the elevator do what it does?" WOW! 🤣 The use of perennial good guy Paul Newman as the evil Sidney Mussburger must be the biggest cast against type since Henry Fonda in Once Upon a Time in The West. I've also got a fondness of the use of Aram Khatchaturian's music, though I may be influenced by the fact that The Onedin Line was a popular TV show when I was a kid. 😊 I wish that you had kept the "double stitch" incident. Leave some for the full length version, I guess. 😊

I so enjoyed this movie. I can suggest sonetging that I enjoyed years ago, and something that still gets quoted here and there by either me or my husband. Humorously enough, the story has a at one time "classic" feel, nervous about the reception of the soon to be completed movie, the owner of his brand new production company added on a couple more things to the movie: magician comedy duo - or comedic magician duo Penn and Teller, and then something that he loved that he figured would get butts on seats or rentals to watch this movie...titties. The wife part of another reaction content maker uses that word a lot for nude female torsos. Since I find the word choice funny i used it for this quiet gem of a comedy My Chauffeur. Glad you liked Hudsucker.

The Coen brothers make great films, but the rest of them are very violent. Blood Simple is a good start; it's film noir, only in color. And Fargo defies description, a lot of comic relief in a violent kidnapping for hire scheme. They also did a remake of the western True Grit which is excellent.

America's greatest filmmakers, back when that used to mean more than it does now. I love how it's basically a 30s-style film with all that Art Deco and Leigh's Rosalind Russell imitation, but the Coens move things up to the 50s when need be (i.e., the invention of the Hula Hoop). Pound for pound, the Coens' most underrated film. How did they get Paul Newman to do this, one wonders? ;) Anyway, if you want to see this type of thing without the ironic nostalgia, try "His Girl Friday", 1940, Cary Grant and Rosalind Russell. You'll need subtitles because everyone's talking faster than a "West Wing" walk-and-talk scene, lol
