@@annother3350 I remember Video killed the Radio Star but this was a much larger hit (at least in the US where the Buggles barely cracked the Top 40.) Looking at the timeline Gary Human released Cars in August 1979 and VKRTS was released in September. I would still argue that this song was the most influential but it is something that can be debated. I was born in 1966 so I was a young teen during this period.

A very historically-important song: it was a huge hit in the US and was the beginning of what is known as 'The Second British Invasion' in the 80s, which was tons of British acts becoming huge in the US. The first British invasion was of course The Beatles, The Rolling Stones etc in the 1960s.

I just love your reactions to these 80s songs. They are so pure. Its especially cool watching you react to the lyrics. The 80s had intense and often very political lyrical content that’s masked by the super up-beat music with whirling 80s synths, jangling guitars, intense drum beats and randomly-placed special effects. It’s great to see the music of my youth through your eyes. Thank you. It makes me smile with every video I watch.

So...you have their first album too?? That's when I saw then just before they hit really big but I already loved Empire State Human and Being Boiled (first new wave animal rights protest song about silkworms!) Loved them before they hit and after, two different bands really. On a side note when I saw them I was standing in the same upper balcony space as Gary Glitter; he seemed to love them, somewhat surprisingly given their closing number!

Hi Jay, always loved the Human League, I remember them singing this on the Xmas Top of the Pops in the U.K., with someone spraying silly string around.

Hi Jovaughn! You are right, there is just something about 80s music! That is why I asked what music your mom listened to the other day. I exposed my 22 year old son to 80s music while he was growing up and he is a huge fan of it (literally because he is 7'4" - lol) like you have become! I agree with other comments that you should listen to Human League's Fascination if you haven't yet.

This is exactly the type of music that makes many serious people look down their nose at the 80's music scene. Part of that is that is was almost impossible to top the 70's; a magical musical decade. But looking back at this pop rock decade it's not too bad! In fact, it's a lot of fun! Of course there was some serious rock in the Eighties too but this is primarily what it's remembered for. Glad you can put this stuff out there for a new generation to see!

As a 10 year old, I remember seeing this on Top of the Pops (BBC chart show) for WEEKS! (Turns out it was 5 weeks at No. 1, 5 weeks is a LONG time as a 10 year old) 😊

This was the UK Christmas number one in the charts in 1981. Listen to the whole album. 'Dare' really is a classic my friend.

Tnx :) Impressive wiki stats "It was a 1981 number one in the UK, It topped the Hot 100 in the US on 3 July 1982, where it stayed for three weeks. In November 1983, Rolling Stone named it the "breakthrough song" of the Second British Invasion of the US.

It’s the juxtaposition of soulful vocals set against the synth machine. That’s the tension you’re experiencing and what makes this record and others around this time so iconic and listenable. They still sound modern, vibrant and relevant. In all great art of one kind or another you’ll find this tension. Styles make fights as they say.

Like someone suggested previously, try 'Living on the Ceiling' by Blancmange. It was a pretty big hit here in the UK during the 80's. It has great energy and got played a lot in clubs. Think it was also edited by the BBC when it got played on the radio and Top of the Pops because it contained the word 'bloody'. Happy days!

These guys lived in a house opposite me in Sheffield, England. Used to see them pile into a van on their way to gigs. Phil Oakley was super recognisable.

This has to be one of THE most iconic songs of the 80's by one of the most iconic bands of the time. Absolutely classic and timeless song and band. This was their biggest hit as well from a good few they had.

You're great, man. On behalf of everyone who was in high school or college when this was out in the early 80's, it's awesome to see you really enjoying the music that we've all loved for almost 40 years. It was REALLY exciting when all of this stuff was brand new, and it still holds up today.

If I recall...the two girls in the band had to get special permission to get out of school so to appear on the tv music show "Top Of The Pops" as they were only 15 at the time.
