Humane, the San Francisco-based AI company co-founded by former Apple executives Imran Chaudhri and Bethany Bongiorno, launched its highly anticipated product, the AI Pin. Unlike traditional phones, this small, screenless digital assistant attaches to clothing using a magnet and is equipped with a camera and sensors to scan the wearer's environment for contextual cues when responding to queries.
While primarily voice-activated, the AI Pin features a unique miniature projector that displays laser icons and text on the user's palm, offering a novel approach to human-device interaction.
The AI Pin's capabilities extend beyond voice commands, incorporating computer vision to assess the nutritional values of food and providing translation features in the user's voice. Powered by Microsoft and OpenAI's large language AI models, the device boasts a Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, ultrawide camera, and Bluetooth connectivity. It is set to run on T-Mobile's network, with availability for purchase starting this year at a price of $699. Users can opt for a data subscription and cloud storage at an additional cost of $24 per month.
Humane's vision for the AI Pin aligns with a desire to counter modern screen addiction by offering a minimalist device. Drawing on the founders' experiences in touch computing with Apple, the AI Pin aims to provide a streamlined alternative to traditional screens.
Humane's AI Pin built up considerable anticipation ahead of its official launch, which was marked by a high-profile awareness campaign featuring supermodel Naomi Campbell at Paris Fashion Week. Imran Chaudhri, one of the co-founders, showcased the device's capabilities at TED, underscoring its dynamic and personalized memory features, such as holographic phone calls and gift recommendations.

So 10 people in a room and they are all talking to their Humane pins. The audio ads are going to be hellish. This is a niche product at best.

Any non visual communication is generally always second to visual communication. That’s a big reason for the dominance not only of phones but also other visual medium like video games, movies etc. in comparison to books or music.

I dont think this will get much momentum. Considering how big companies invest so much into improving displays, this is seemingly an unwinnable war.

I have seen this concept before. I do not believe this is what is going to replace mobile devices. 99% of things you do on a smart phone can not be done effectively on this device. AR/VR are more of the direction we could be heading. Something like Apple Vision Pro have the potential to replace smart phones, and computers all together at some point in the future.
