As a kid I felt really bad for Quasimodo not "getting the girl". It had sort of been ingrained in me, even that early, that the hero is supposed to get the girl. But this is a healthier lesson to learn. Esmeralda loves Quasimodo, just not romantically, but that does not cheapen their relationship. Quasimodo is heartbroken, but he still cares about her and he doesn't put the blame on Esmeralda or feel like she owes him anything (wich Frollo totally does). And he can still appreciate the platonic relationship they share without becoming bitter or jealous. Sure, he is a bit jealous of Pheobus when the heartbreak is still fresh but move past it. I guess my point is; can we just normalise relationships that aren't romantic in movies?

So dark but so good, Disney covering more complex themes than just a dead parent back in the 90s. Got gaslighting, abuse, lust, blackmail, racism, corruption, zealotry, self-loathing, unrequited love, only a handful of Disney movies now cover half as many themes and do it so well. Frollo is horrific in how real he is, Quasimodo's journey is amazing to go against the path of getting the girl and earning acceptance - something he needed more , and the music is top notch it still baffles me how this didn't get the credit it deserves when it came out

Gothal stole Rapunzel for her magic hair as an infant, kept her locked away in a hidden tower, and filled her head with BS about how the world will want her for her power. Now, Frollo. He murders Quasimodo's mother on the steps of a church, nearly drowns Quasimodo as a baby, only takes him in to save his soul from damnation, locks him away in the churches belltower, abuses him by calling him ugly and how the world will shun him for it, and to top it all of, he lied about how his mother abandoned him and he willingly adopted him.

By the way, the original novel was written by Victor Hugo, whom also wrote Les Misérables. The novel is great, and much darker. But Disney really did a good job of turning this into one of their movies and still keeping some dark elements. Out of the movie adaptations that stay closer to the book, I like the 1956 version. And of course we have the musical Notre Dame de Paris, which is amazing and also rather true to the original.

Just a notice: this movie was the first to have the word 'curse' in it. Also, during the Hellfire song Frollo states that 'it's not his fault', but it is hinted that he actually realizes that it IS (the words 'mea culpa' in the background mean 'my fault')

While "mea culpa" literally means "my fault," I would suggest that in the context of the prayer that is being sung by the choir, it really means, "(it is) my fault." So what you're hearing is "It's not my fault." (It is my fault.) "I'm not to blame." (It is my fault.) I've seen this many times, but I never noticed that ironic contrast before.

Frollo is the greatest Disney villain ever, there I said it... he's the most real evil there is in any Disney film; powerful, smart, cunning, respected and looked up to by many, capable of both physical and mental abuse without the victim/victims knowing he's even doing it to them and most importantly of all... everything he does he thinks is "right", indeed there's a part of him that is a monster and he probably somewhat acknowledges that, however the majority of the time he truly thinks he is the good, righteous person prepared to make the tough choices for a "greater good". He is a monster truly because he no longer can see nor no longer wants to see his own evil. Yes, it looks like he revels in it, but there's a truly scary part of him which believes every single thing he is doing is good, it's like he is at war in himself and ultimately he lets evil win... Disney made a film that is so true to what evil is that it made many people find it too dark, when the truth is that they actually made a film that is the most *truthful* about what evil is, and for a film studio that makes the most positive and brightest stories that shine a light on the happier moments in life, I think it is so important they made this film to equally shine a light on the darkest and most evil parts of humanity...

It is now among my top disney movies and top movie osts. Its brilliant, dark, and has one of THE most evil and complex villains of all disney movies. Frollo saw her as a devil Quasimodo saw her as an angel But Phobias just saw her as a person and equal. And all she needed was for someone to see her as an equal, as human. Especially considering that many people didn’t see her as equal being a Gypsie.

This movie feels very personal for me. I grew up, not knowing I was a special-needs child. Asperger syndrome and ADHD made school very difficult for me for many reasons. The only grown-ups that didn't fail me as a child and teen was my parents, and I was constantly picked on for being different, so Esmeralda's quote about Frollo failing those that needs his help the most really hits hard.

Tony Jay, the voice actor for Frollo, said that Hellfire took a lot out of him. I can certainly understand, especially cause of the final note! Also, in the original book, Frollo was a priest, so you can see why they couldn't take that route. Unfortunately, the book has a tragic end. The lava was melted iron or metal, I believe.

Geez I can't say how much I love this film. The most mature and daring challenge ever done by the studio. One of my favorites Disney movies with one of my favorite soundtracks ever done by Alan Menken. It's so dark and melodramatic! Thanksfully, I watched it for the first when I was a teen. It would have scared my soul as a kid. Frollo is the final boss of Disney Villains. And the fact that he's so close to our reality with just his psychopathic mind (no evil powers, no megalomaniac plans) makes him the most creepiest Disney villains ever. The chemistries between the four main characters, Frollo Quasimodo Esmeralda and Phoebus, are amazing. Every character has the time to shine on screen. I also really appreciate the social commentary about racism. Yes, the book "Le Bossu de Notre Dame" is A LOT darker than this, but for Disney's standards, that was a real master stroke.

@@LuisGustavoSO I wouldn't say Be Prepared has more impact, at least not in my opinion. Both are setting up the main conflict of the films but Hellfire goes deeper into the villain's motivation and really does an incredible job of showing us his twisted sense of reality, religious virtue and hatred that drives him. Be Prepared is simply a demonstration of the forces Scar has been building in the shadows and telling us he's going to take over. It shows us his ambition and arrogance but not any of his vulnerabilities or insecurities. Hellfire has more depth in my opinion so it left a much bigger impact on me as a kid.

A nice touch during the song Hellfire is that those robed figures are chanting a Latin phrase that translates to "My fault. My most grievous fault." It's part of the mass, called "Confiteor" or "I confess", which the whole point of is to confess to your sins as a flawed human being and pray for mercy and guidance. It highlights how Frollo's delusion of righteousness and virtue flies completely contrary to the actual points and teachings he tries to hide behind. Even his first like in the song shows this off. "Of my virtue I am justly proud" "I'm so much better than the common crowd" That is the textbook definition of pride and vanity as a sin, and he fully displays it while trying to call himself virtuous and ask for salvation without admitting it's all his own fault he's on this path or considering changing his ways even when he knows he's on the path the damnation.

The songs in hunchback aren’t just really good they either progress the plot or reveal the nature and character of the people whom sing them Both parts of Out there and heavens light/hellfire are duets between Frollo and Quasi that tells us exactly what kind of people they are as well as their world views and motivations. Esmerelda's song shows us who she is and how kind and selfless she is, asking for others while everyone else asks for themselves The opening song not only sets up the events of the film and but also establishes the character and presence of the cathedral itself. etc. etc.

When you watch this, you really have to take in the juxtaposition of Frollo's, Quasimodo's and Phoebus' view of Esmeralda; Frollo sees her as a witch or even the devil in disguise, a temptress put on earth solely to tempt him (and him specifically) to sin. To him, the way to avoid this is to marry her, because he would get absolute power over her in marriage, thus "conquering his sin" in a way. Quasimodo sees her as an angel, a saviour who can do no wrong. While it's a positive image, it's still an image. Phoebus sees her as human and his equal; that's why he's the one she falls for in the end. But also, Frollo's reaction when she doesn't want her is to kill her, while Quasimodo, when he realises, gives his blessing to Phoebus and Esmeralda. Someone else has said this exact thing before and much more eloquently, but I couldn't see that anyone had put it here yet, so...

To answer your question at the beginning "What did they do?" when the gypsies were arrested; gypsies were notorious for being traveling bands of cut throats, thieves and murderers, not really adhering to the law of any city or country they went through. Those four gypsies were trying to enter into Paris illegally, which is why two of them were saying, "Shut it up, will you? We'll be spotted!" You also have the stereotype of gypsies who were practitioners of witchcraft and black magic, like fortune tellers and witches.

The world does not forgive deformety easily. Someone whos face isn't pleasing or adheres to the general norm will always fight an uphill battle. This doesn't mean that there are not people out there who will see you for what you are and treat you like a human being, but you _will_ have to wade through a whole lot of ugly in between. Frollo displays the trope of Evil Cannot Comprehend good a lot in this movie. I think the best example of this trope is at the end of his tirade against Quasimodo near the end. After he chastises Quasimodo for letting Esmeralda escape and being fooled by Esmeralda's fake kindness (at least in Frollo's mind), Frollo asks Quasimodo what chance he could have had of not falling for Esmeralda's trickery. This indicates that Frollo believes Esmeralda tricked Quasimodo into letting her go, because, by virtue of being Romani, she would naturally trick people into doing anything (heck, this belief is what leads him to want to hunt her down in the first place). Therefore, the idea that she would actually do something for the sake of it being the right thing to do (treat Quasimodo with the minuscule amount of decency Frollo never would), or that Quasimodo would decide to help her of his own free will, doesn't register in his mind. She HAD to have manipulated him. This ends up being Frollo's major flaw. He's so convinced that he has everybody figured out that he fails to recognize his own shortcomings and they all end up coming back to bite him.

(Hell, almost everyone dies lmao) Quasi is so consumed by grief that he goes to her grave and lays beside her body, and dies of starvation. An excavation-group finds them many years later, and sees their skeletons are still embracing each other. When they try and separate them, they both turn to dust. So yeah.. Disney had to 'lighten up' A LOT of the material for this movie (don't even get me started on Frollo's origin and his brother), but it is still one of the darkest pieces of art they have ever made, which I do appreciate.

The music in this movie is soooo dang good. IMO this movie is the pinnacle of Disney’s golden animation era (starting with Little Mermaid and ending with Atlantis) before they started to focus more on digital animation. In fact, I think this was the first Disney movie to make use of crowd simulations and it made those huge crowd shots feel so organic and natural. And Frollo. Most terrifying Disney villain ever. What makes him so disturbing is he’s not doing any of this for personal gain or for power like every other Disney villain, he has everything he could possibly want and all the power in the city. No, he’s doing these horrible things because he genuinely believes they’re the right thing to do. That and he’s not infallible and he recognizes when he’s straying even from his own twisted morals. He’s so chillingly… human. And that makes him all the more disturbing. If I recall properly, this movie didn’t do as well in the box office because nobody really knew what to make of it at the time. It was a Disney blockbuster summer animated movie, so it should be great fun for the kids, right? But, it was so dark and somber in tone that it threw a lot of people off.
