When the father started saying he was supposed to die before his children but couldn't even get the whole phrase out, that really rips a person's heart out.

I lost my son to a drug overdose six months ago. Been binge watching Mikes channel for awhile, and through my depression. Takes my mind off of the dark. So thank you- all of you. This really is a great channel.

That father's heartbreaking line, "I'm supposed to die..." made me think of Theoden saying: "No parent should have to bury their child." Unbelievable tragedy.

Yosemite does have a lot of forested areas. So it kinda makes sense that it’s one of Mike’s ‘Top Tree Places’ to visit

When Cary's brother Steven died 10 years after he escaped, one of his pallbearers was the boy he had rescued, Timmy White (now 14). White later became a Sheriff's Deputy . . . and died at age 35 of a pulmonary embolism. His parents outlived him and he left behind his wife and children. This is a heartbreaking story all around. Both boys deserved to live long, happy lives.

I know a guy who broke into a pharmacy at night when it was closed and stole some pills and he did 8 years in prison (3 more years than Kenneth Purcell for kidnapping those boys). Call me old fashioned, but I would think stealing children to be worse crime than stealing pills.

"In the car she went crazy..." no psycho you were crazy. The brave woman just tried to save her life. What a story.

"Carrey's uncle Jessie, who he was living with at the time, was shot and killed in their home. The killer was never found." I... think I might have an idea who did it.

“I’m supposed to die.” My heart was broken by that father.

The dad. Dear God. He had me in tears when he broke down.

I feel so awful for all of the victims. Silvina went through something so horrible so far from home; her mother saying, "she never hurt anyone, not even with words," was heartbreaking.

I meet Steve, Carey's brother when I was in Elementary school, he was going around doing public speeches on not trusting strangers. I grew up in Atwater a city in Merced County Ca. So it was a huge news story and shortly after he visited our school he died in a motorcycle accident. Years later when I heard about this incident I was shocked and horrified. I've visited Yosemite several times it is a beautiful park can't imagine what those poor women went through. Prayers for their loved ones.

When you started going into his brother’s case I was like “holy shit is that the case I think it is”, and as soon as you said he died in a motorcycle accident I knew it was. I had no idea his brother then turned into a serial killer. That poor family.

I can't be the only one who cried when the father broke down....that was awful. :(

Im surprised they never revisted the case of his uncle being shot considering he was living with a future serial killer. Cops were dropping the ball on every play.

Seeing a grown man and father cry like that is just so heartbreaking. It almost chokes me up. I just can't imagine the pain he must be in. From now til the day he dies he will still be devastated.

I was an exchange student in Argentina when this story broke, and Silvina was all over the news. A lot of parents didn't want their kids to go to the States or be exchange students after this. May all three RIP

If you're staying at a motel and someone knocks and yells "Maintenance", Do Not let them in .. They can fix the supposed repair after you chechout. I always remembered this story about the Mom and 2 girls on vacation..

I grew up in Modesto in the 70/80’s. Everyone knew about Steven Stayner. Mother’s used it as a cautionary tale to keep kids from wandering off. So sad.

I don’t think there’s any other channel that can make anyone cringe at a story and laugh at it simultaneously.

Ugh, this one was hard to watch for multiple reasons... Imagine being Julie. Watching your mom being murdered. Then your friend. Then enduring what she did before he finally killed her too. And Joey, literally jumping out of a moving car and running on pure adrenaline, desperate to survive, and still being caught. Made me emotional to think about it. 😢

"And he took his mustache with him!" Were almost the last words i ever heard because I laughed and choked on my food 💀

Such a sad situation. His brother was a hero gone through every worse of hell. Steven had every reason to set havoc in the world yet he was selfless and saved another boy while Cary was at home loved by his parents yet he came out to be an evil turd. May his brother rest in peace. Such a crazy story of two brothers and their fate.

I remember watching the movie about his brother Steven on Lifetime years ago when I was younger. Back then I didn't know what happened to Carey. No matter what, Carey did horrible things. Yet, at the same time, Kenneth Parnell (the guy who kidnapped Steven) started a whole domino effect that didn't just ruin Steven's life, but the lives of the entire family too. It's sad.

I worked in the shopping village as a maintenance assistant in Modesto where Carole’s wallet was found. I was 19 years old. I’ll never forget it… chilled me to the bone.

Why does the media stick a camera in someone’s face and leave it there when they are getting their heart broken and crying from grief? GOOD LORD GIVE THEM SOME PRIVACY!!

The only time I ever saw my father cry was when my sister died at 19 and he said the same thing this father did. Then another sister died suddenly at 35, also before my parents. It gutted them.

The father breaking down like that really got me. You can see his pain. Breaks my heart for him.

The Stayners have really been thru some shit.. Poor Steven, I didn't know he died so young. And after having basically what ended up being half his life stolen.. so unfair. Those old pics with Cary in the background glaring at Steven.. so creepy.

I remember the story about Steven. It was heartbreaking. He was a hero and a beautiful soul.

Omg, I remember so clearly when this happened! I was in Middle School and my Mom & I visited Yosemite two weeks before the first three women were kidnapped. I remember it really shook my Mom up because she was a single parent and fiercely independent. We lived in Washington State but would go on road trips all the time. Being a big fan of the outdoors, we would often stay at State or National Parks, usually in the lodges because they were cheaper and family friendly. After this happened, we would only travel with other families or friends. Thank you for covering this story. I knew they found the killer, but I didn’t know who his family was or that he had other victims. Super scary!

I was a student at garden gate elementary school which had yearly trips to yosemite. Joie was our camp guide. She was absolutely fantastic, and I'm not just saying this out of respect for the dead. She really was a truly wonderful person, beautiful inside and out. It did not surprise me at all that she fought. RIP

I've only recently discovered your channel and I've been binge watching episode after episode for days now... with seemingly SO many more vids to go (which is perfect.. I never want to run out - your style, humour/self deprecation/authenticity, and lighthearted yet poignant insight into all these cases is fantastic work). Anyway. What got me thinking is... how many murders and serial killers have been around and still are. It's mind boggling.. and channels like these really make you realise this stuff is more common than we tend to imagine. Scary stuff.. and so sad how many lives have been taken for so little (not like there's ever any justification for murder). Anyway, keep it up man. Love it.

I have heard this story told several times, but it hits different when Mike tells it!! VIVA MIKE!!!

Imagine having a blast with your best friend, on vacation and in the blink of an eye, complete terror. Crazy.

This case has always been one to stick with me. Once I was traveling cross country, just myself as a teen girl and my mother. One evening when we were about to fall asleep a man came knocking and yelling at what sounded like our door or just the door next to us at our motel. We both got wide eyed and agreed not to open our door. Period. Still don't know what that was all about but to this day it's very suspicious to me bc of the whole situation. We heard/felt the banging and couldn't make out what he was saying. It was like a sinister plan to get us to open our door. No thanks.

One small detail, Cary, was 4 years older than Stephan, his cousins said Cary was creepy and weird as child, well before Stephan was kidnapped. He'd sneak around and watch the girls in the family undress and say creepy things. His Mom and Dad made excuses, boy's will be boys, he was just curious etc. When he was older he was caught, peeping into windows around town.

When I first started watching Mike's channel I thought he was a bit flippant. After the first video I didn't really like him. I watched another, and one week later had watched every video on his channel. This dude is addictive!

What’s also tragic, poor little Timothy White who Stephen Stayner saved died young at like 35/36 from a pulmonary embolism. A lot of tragedy around this case....

I am from Canada and so surprised on how many killers and unsolved cases we have. What really impressed me was the story of the Oland Family. I like about 1hour away from Saint John, New Brunswick. What a tragic family story. The made for TV movie, "I know my first name is Steven" is a tearjerker. It doesn't seem fathomable that two horrific incidents can happen in one family.

He was told, "Don't go anywhere!" He went somewhere...and took his mustache with him!!!😊😀😄😅😂 Here I'm so broken hearted over the loss of life of such beautiful souls, the Father especially, tore me up😢😓😞.... than Mike just lightened up the moment. It seems like if the police had opened the backpack at the time they took it, they’d have cause to arrest him on the spot before he killed the next young woman. 😞

Hi Mike! I really enjoy all your videos. This one struck me in particular because of Cary's brother, Steven. I watched that mini-series called, "I know My First Name is Steven" when I was 12 years old. It was a what we all talked about. It was very powerful. It's really crazy to find out Steven's brother turned into a disturbing killer. A mom, her daughter and friend are just out for a nice vacation and then are met with absolute tragedy. And then a young woman who was ready to move on to her next destination senselessly killed, as well. Thanks for your wonderful videos, Mike!
