I think they are probably something used in the petroleum industry for oil or natural gas testing. The first three were all in petroleum rich basins, the paradox basin in utah, the basin in Romania in the Carpathian mountains, and the paradox basin again in Colorado (the basin is where the two states border each other). They are made from metal which would deflect the suns light and heat from whatever is inside.

I saw a close up of the original monolith and it was some screws holding it together. I don't think it's anything to profound. Just my humble opinion

If you think about it. What does it look like? A 4 sided mirror. These are being put up so in case anyone happens to walk by it and go up to it and see their reflection in it. Their reflection is showing their evil.
