Glad that I was able to help get that PSU sorted for you. Really enjoyed the video, and that machine definitely turned out very nice after its restoration and cleanup :)

Very cool ;) I have a very similar setup with an IBM 5155 topped by a 5151 monitor in dual-display mode, except that I hooked the internal CRT to the Berg connector of an ATI EGA Wonder 800 instead of a CGA card. The image quality on the amber display is much better that way and pairs beautifully with the crisp MDA/Hercules!

I bought a 5155 from an electronics recycler a few months ago. It's in a good condition, and with some time and patience I got it running again. I wish I had that Datamini Turbo board, though.

Update: It seems that I can get an NEC v20 chip to replace the 8088 and then an overclock mod to get the entire speed to run around 8MHz.

Reading that article on RLL controllers in your video, it seems that 32MB would be correct for your 20MB Seagate drive, as RLL controllers can use MFM drives and get more storage out of them. So that's why you weren't seeing any errors. It really is effectively bigger, and is probably completely alien and unrecognizable to a regular MFM controller at that point.

Thanks! Yeah this whole RLL/MFM stuff is pretty new to me, but it does seem to work fine though. I was just a bit concerned that the drive wasnt "designed" to be an 33mb RLL drive so that there may be issues..

@@ohsoretro5612 Back in the day, you could actually swap your MFM disk controller with an RLL one and gain both performance and capacity from an existing MFM disk. An RLL controller is - as you said - over-formatting an MFM disk by using a more efficient data layout. In the end, MFM drives are just platters with direct connection between their heads and a controller, so the controller may choose any read/write scheme that doesn't exceed physical capabilities of platters. "Plain MFM" is just extremely inefficient with the format, especially on outer tracks.

@@peachgrush Thanks for the info! So was there any actual physical difference then between the RLL and MFM version of the same drive? LIke the ST-225 and ST-238R for example, or was it just branding bascially?

@@ohsoretro5612 Pairing an RLL controller and the ST-225 was very common. I did it on most of my 8088 systems back in the day. On the BBS scene we would get some people posting that "we were asking for trouble" with our drives but I never had even a hint of trouble from the practice over the years.

@@hansoak3664Thanks for the info! I was using this machine again the other day though and the boot sector kinda died..even though the data is all still there.. so I think I might have run into a RLL/ST-255 problem :(
