Unfortunately, the only reason why he was never given the recognition he deserved until now was because he was gay. Poor guy saved the world but was forced into suicide because people did not approve.

I feel like this is a fact that gets left out of a lot of discussions about The Imitation Game, somehow! Don't get me wrong- the fact that Turing played such an integral role in defeating the Nazis is an *enormous* deal, but it also just amazes me to think about the level to which computers play such a massive, massive role in our entire society today, and how Turing was basically the first one to kickstart all of that. Granted it sounds like the movie took some liberties, and I haven't done enough other research on him to know exactly how much the development of computer science was founded on Touring's work, but... it sure seems like it was! And that's just incredible to me, that someone who played such a role in essentially shaping the world today as we know it, isn't a household name.

I liked the movie, but the historical accuracy is sacrificed for dramatic convenience. He was not a loner. He was well-liked by his team. His boss was not screaming at him, threatening to pull his funding.

If film was similar to history then instead of watching well made dramatic movies we would be watching stuff from Social Studies class. It's the same thing with Argo, and even the Social Network. People aren't gonna love your movie based on real life unless you make some more interesting shit up, because real life just isn't as interesting.

onetruegentleman What, England getting bombed and otherwise attacked by Nazi Germany, with many lives being lost in the process wasn't dramatic enough for you?

nicodimus2222 "I liked the movie", Just leave it at that then. Like the other guy said, if it was 100% accurate it would not have been as suspenseful. I don't know his actual story but if he was well-liked, not under any pressure from the 'boss', not being threatened to be stopped, where is the suspense? While in real life the threat of people dying from Nazi air raids etc would be pressure, in movie context that isn't pressure to keep an audience engaged.
@bryangutierrez5
@bryangutierrez5 9 жыл бұрын
nicodimus2222 A war movie is a war movie, you don't have to do much to make a war dramatic. But a team of people building a a (by these days standards) very low tech machine? Sure the subtext may be exciting, and it may make an interesting read for people into that kind of stuff, but you can't expect that to translate to film well without SOME sort of conflict in the way. You say that he wasn't a loner, his team liked him and his boss wasn't pushing him, that's like 90 percent of the movies conflict right there. Without it the story would be much more dull.
@cameronw6259

It's made to be more entertaining, like he's fighting for something rather than being loved and cheerful, then it wouldn't have been suspenseful and no movie extremely historically accurate

Not to be "that guy", but Turing didn't build the Machine. That's an artistic liberty the director took for the movie. Some guy had originally build the machine, but Egnigma was rebuild as an aftermath of that, leaving it useless. Turing was actually hired to rebuild the machine. So your statement about him being "the first" is somewhat not correct. I loved the movie though, and I absolutely don't mind when directors change the story to make a better movie for it, which I believe was the case of The Imitation Game, in my top 10 too. Amazing movie.

Simon Pettersen haven't watched the movie yet, however ur first stament is correct, but the original enigma was very basic and was figured out within a week of the invasion of Poland (that's why the success didn't last long, Germany had Poland before it could be taken into proper effect) the new and improved model outstrips the original the same way a smart tv outstrips any tv from the 90's which kind of makes Turing the more impressive in my opinion

MegaDragonslayer1997 It just didn't live up to the first two seasons. The writing was lazy and pandered way to much, The humour was tired and predictable and the stories weren't all that interesting, the only episode that I remember all that well was the second episode and I only remember that because the conclusion didn't make sense. Over all it was just a disappointing experience. Witch makes it even worse considering how good the first two seasons were.

***** That's BS, J, sorry. In what world is that EVER a spoiler? It's in the trailers and every review synopsis and it's a well known story. There's no way one can do an adequate review of this film without at least touching on it. Finally! (Totally agree with you about the marketing/release BS.) Personally, I was prepared to be grief-stricken and outraged and awestruck by this film because I was aware of Turing’s story before I saw The Imitation Game. What I wasn't prepared for was how familiar it would be. Anyone who has been even a little bit uncool, geeky, or just plain intelligent in primary school will recognize, and empathize with, the open wounds of Turing as a boy and the scars of Turing as a man. Cumberbatch’s work (brilliant, of course) includes having Turing crumple under the weight of society’s dislike-and finally open persecution-while he, somewhat baffled by the people around him, just wants to solve puzzles and, incidentally, give us all the modern computer. My thanks for giving it AWESOMETACULAR status.

Buddy, I just gotta say I really love your reviews. You and your team have a true talent for presenting things for their face value on a level that everyone has to relate to, on some level. This movie has been on my "don't forget to check it out list", for probably too long at this point. The things that you were stoked about were precisely what I was hoping for from this movie. I just watched the trailer for the eleventy-millionth time and I was in the same place that it's left me every time. Excited to see one of my favorite actors portray a genius that never got his due credit, in today's society. He was recognized, undoubtedly, but as you said he was one that never stood amongst the well known. My only hesitation (but certainly not a deal breaker) was that the trailer really played a lot more to his romance and kind of painted a Friday Night Lights kind of backdrop to a story that I feared would lose it's value to classic Hollywood bs. Your review eased that tension. Keep doing what you're doing. As a long time movie lover and studier, as well as a self proclaimed connoisseur of reviews and what makes a good youtube video, you have a fan in me. Cheers.

After reading all these comments criticizing you for not mentioning it, I feel the need to THANK YOU for keeping your review straightforward and to-the-point which isn't that he was gay but that he was a genius going up against impossible odds. My interpretation of the movie: it was not about neither about homosexuality (to some extent) nor development of the deciphering machine. It was about a man, who, no matter of his contribution in ending the war, was condemned just for being homosexual. It's the society, that should be cured, not Alan Turing.

This movie was awesome! The framing was perfect, the pacing was crisp, the characters had personality and were relatable, there's really heavy moments, and it's intriguing as fuck. What else do you need? Not to mention the acting. Just watch this movie without bias from the comments. It really isn't one of those World War 2 flicks we always get. Very thoughtful and intelligent biopic about an unsung hero. Like he said, its a very intense movie that tells a great story that some will either respect and understand or completely ignore its great themes. Benedict Cumberbatch is a brilliant actor and gives an incredible performance, one that focuses on Turing's genius and his struggles as a homosexual when at any second the wrong person could find out and arrest him. Some people aren't fans of Cumberbatch which is fine and is their opinion, but to call him 'overrated' after a performance like this is simply a sin. Keira Knightly also came out of nowhere with a great performance. It may have its inaccuracies like every biopic, but I hope people respect the themes and at least appreciate the great things this man did for us. Once again Jeremy, great review!

Hey, first time leaving a comment, awesome channel, you're doing good work here. You can't tell but I'm giving you two thumbs ups. Now, this review. Honestly, this wasn't a bad movie, it was good but nothing more than good. Actors did great work however I felt that this movie should have been longer. There was really no emotional connection the audience, at least me, made with any other characters other than Cumberbatch and Knightly. When Hollywood does a movie like this on a relatively unknown historical figure, I feel that more light should be shed on the entirety of their life. I felt like the details were brushed over and that making up a childhood for this historical character doesn't do justice and ruins the magic of a movie about a historical person by reminding me that I'm watching a screen with actors role playing. Just my opinion, maybe I'm asking for a documentary or the writing and directing were as dry as I perceived them. Keep up the good work! PEACE

If you ever visit Manchester (in England) make sure to visit the Turing Memorial. It's a part of the memorial garden just off canal street. It's a beautifully moving and understated statue. What's most striking about it is that, despite the fact that you can sit beside him and have your picture taken should you choose to do so, he looks so lonely. Loved this film. Watched The Imitation Game yesterday and I loved it so much. Great acting from Benedict Cumberbatch, who portrayed the demeanor and the voice of a lonely genius so well. Despite knowing what to expect(since I read the plot), it still touches me very much. Great movie.

I like Cumberbatch a lot but I do agree he's definitely a bit over-saturated at the moment. That said though, him being cast as Turing is actually legit good casting so I let this one slide.

Jeremy I have been subbed for a while. One thing that I've never payed attention to is when you release reviews. Do you have a certain day a week when you review movies like other channels with schedules or do you do it when you are able to? Just a something that came to mind.

Until this movie came out I didn't actually know how unrecognised Alan Turing is... In my school one of the 6 houses is named after him, I just assumed everybody knew about him. I'm really glad this phenomenal movie is giving him the recognition he deserves.

Loved this movie. It made me cry, which is very hard to do. I partially blame the fact that a few years back, I did research on Alan Turing and the Turing Tests, and was appalled that neither I nor anyone else in my class had ever heard of him. Alan Turing should be a household name.

I've seen the Enigma Machine and the machine made to crack it. The Enigma is the size of a typewriter, but Turner's machine was 10 times that, it was really cool.

The weird thing is that prior to the release of this film, I wasn't aware Alan Turing's role in breaking the Enigma Code and early development of modern day computing, but as a fan of science-fiction I'd often seen or read about the Turing Test being used to determine whether and artificial lifeform was sentient or not. So it seems kind ironic that he has been part of current day culture before now, just not for what most would consider his most important contribution.

Correction, Jeremy. Enigma is the code that Turing tries to break. The machine is named a "bombe". But thank you for approving this movie. One of the best of 2014! :D

It's interesting (but not surprising) to me that Turing's contribution to the war effort is not widely known in the USA. If the work on Enigma interested you then you should look into the Lorenz cipher (Enigma on hard mode) and the Colossus machine they built to break it.
