So glad you addressed this. I'm really passionate about sustainable transportation and it's frustrating how much attention and resources electric cars gobble up compared to electric bikes, improved public transportation, improved rail, etc. I live in the United States and our "transportation" system is so focused on cars. It's so sad because most daily car trips in the United States are less than 5 miles. I've had my electric bike for almost 2 years and I'm at 6,000 miles. I am so glad these trips weren't taken in a car.

Great points. I live in the US also and another problem is that a lot of people don’t really live in metropolitan areas that are conducive to public transport. For example, I live in Wisconsin, and virtually the entire state is rural/ relatively small towns except for Madison and Milwaukee. Even many people who work in Madison and Milwaukee live in the suburbs and generally public transport does not cross over city boundaries. Madison, for example, has a pretty nice bus system which I would love to use, but because I don’t live within city boundaries, it does not service my area and I am much too far for biking into the city. I wouldn’t mind living within the city either, but it is way more expensive and you get less for your money doing so. I think this is a common dilemma a lot of people have.

YES! Like she said, EVs are not a magic pill, yet people keep pushing them as one. For public transport, unless you live in a city (usually an older one), public transportation is often...iffy. Some towns have really good systems that cover a big area and are user friendly, others are not. I'm in NE and we're pushing to get more bike lanes put in, especially in residential, low-income areas where less of the population has access to a car. The hope is this design will also allow buses to safely use the area. I bike when/where I can and am working semi-remote right now. The bike often isn't safe in the winter due to narrow roadways and the early nights though.

@yuulfuji Жыл бұрын
Unfortunately not everyone has access to those. For me, I live with my single mother, and we do not live in the USA. Its an island, so there are no trains. The buses are unsafe, and don’t get us to our location fast enough. Neither will electric bikes. So, we have to have a car.

Think the main problem that was left unmentioned here is: EU countries (like Gemany) also have Lithium mines, yet they outsource the mining to poorer, politically corrupt countries, that would end up poluting their land but keep the Western Europe 'green'. If anyone wants to know more, just look up the protests in Serbia against Rio Tinto going on right now. Also check out the aftermath that RioTinto left in other countries before. Their ecosystems are destroyed.. In conclusion, EU wants to be 'eco-friendly' and sustainable at the expense of others, yet don't allow Lithium mining at their own back door of course. This is something only EU citizens can fight against, since real victims don't get to vote on it, they just get land exploited Edit: Anyways, I wanna leave on the positive note. This video is very well done and stright to the point. I'm glad you mentioned that public transportation development is important, and that many people are forced to drive a car to work. Good job

Actually, it's true to a point. Chilean miners are unionized, and payed, for example. And the Serbian protesters are the usual NIMBY exaggerating the impact VS benefit. Plus, EU has a strong policy to recycle lithium. Not only for sustainability, but because EU does not want to be dipendant from other sources - see the actual Russian gas crisis, or the long and complex story from petrol. So, yeah, lithium mines have an impact, socially, economically, and in pollution. Just be sure on what are the true costs, and on who that costs fall upon, and what are exaggeration built up by big oil.
@SeeNickView

NIMBYism at its finest! Big problem with the US too. Biden greenlit oil projects in the Gulf earlier this year/late last year, but people are calling him a hypocrite for it. A country's resources have to come from somewhere, and how people argue about that just shows their underlying hypocrisy. I didn't know that about Serbia! Thanks for sharing!

@@SeeNickView I wanna mention that Serbia isn't the only future victim. RioTinto poisoned a whole river in Papua New Guinea with their mining and destoyed Aboriginal cave. They caused so many health probles to locals in Bougainville. Of course their goverments is as corrupt as ours, so they just beat the hell out of their own people for complaining about it. The only difference is that what is happening is Serbia can still be prevented. We're protesting for clean air, but this is an Anglo-Australian company and our goverment is of course in their pockets

Great video! One important thing I think is missing from public discussion however, is lifestyle. There are so many people out there who own cars even though they don’t really need one. And companies that don’t have to keep their staff in city offices have a certain responsibility here too. No city job, no commute. So much to discuss! Anyway, I appreciate the videos you make, thank you.

I feel like the government has an impact in telecommuting. Mayor Eric Adams of New York City spoke out against a company going all virtual. Governor Phil Murphy of New Jersey is doing something similar. Gov. Murphy ordered state employees to return to the office on November 15, 2021-timed badly with flu season, the holidays and the COVID Omicron variant boom. Government officials are acting in the interest of office building land lords as constituents, tax payers and stake-holders, in addition to having a desire for their tax dollars incoming. These government officials are acting against the health of these workers, both in COVID risk and health issues linked with commuting, and acting against climate change recovery by demanding in-office worker presence. And bullocks to New Jersey Congressperson Josh Gottheimer for opposing New York City Congestion Pricing. Yeah. Like Gitte said, vote for people who prioritize climate change recovery.

I was told long ago, that 'repair' was usually way better than buying new. Yes, a new fridge is more efficient than an older model, but not usually so efficient to negate the mining, transport, manufacturing and distribution of the newer fridge compared to keeping the older model going.

Being an electric car owner myself, this video blew my mind. Prior to my second hand Leaf, I had a large diesel company car. Sustainability is something that is fairly new to me and my family and although we buy things that are marketed as more sustainable, when you dig deeper most aren't. We also have a second hand diesel car used only for long journeys as infrastructure isn't really there yet where I live for charging. Generally as a family we walk or bike and go by train for work trips. This was a great education for me.

Thank you for mentioning about where the power source of your electric car is coming from! I really doubt a lot of people think that deep into it. I live in Kentucky in the United States where most of the energy comes from coal - not to brag but I have my place set up to use as much renewable energy as possible rather than be only energized by coal. Anyway, there are quite a few EVs in the area I live with charging ports that rely on the energy from coal! It's not as if the charging ports are being used with renewable energy - which is really unfortunate. I love your deep dive into it. I also work for the state's environmental program and I know a new EV plant is being constructed in the state and I am going to take a peak at their permitting to see if there is any mention about recycling or renewing the lithium batteries made (i doubt there will be)! I feel this conversation, along with many of your other conversations, really make people look far into the future about the environmental changes rather than just at the immediate do good. Yes EVs are better, however, as you stated, what will be done with all of the batteries?

Thank you for this! I love your impact videos. I’d be interested in seeing the impact of sustainable aesthetic (swapping out current things for the seemingly more sustainable version) vs. holding onto the (seemingly) less sustainable version. I know the most zero waste option is to not get rid of things we own but I’m curious to know how big of a difference it makes to keep/maintain existing items instead of replacing them with sustainable ones.

Idk if it makes sense to make an impact video about that per se, when so much of my content is about just that, it’s sort of the theme😅 . Holding on to your old things rather than buying new aesthetic zero waste swaps makes a huge difference. I talk about this in the impact of stainless steel video, as well as the bamboo video, where I also include a lifecycle analysis on different types of straws 👌🌿

Electrical engineer here, can confirm that Gittemary gets electric motors mostly right (This is in the classical physics view, fellow engineers and physicists) Anything involving the circular/looped motion of charged particles, particularly electrons, creates a magnetic field or "magnetic moment". If this matter is subject to an externally applied magnetic field from another source, the matter will seek to orient itself in a way so as to minimize the difference in field direction. For example, imagine a square loop of wire depicted on a piece of paper. Imagine that the current through that loop is going counterclockwise. Via the right-hand rule (curl your right hand in the direction of the current; thumb = magnetic field direction), a magnetic moment would be created, pointing out of the page. If another magnetic field from say another, bigger loop were applied so that its direction pointed downward on the page, the magnetic moment of the small loop would seek to align itself with the bigger one: e.g. by rotating the small loop 90° downwards so that the small loop is sticking out of the page and both magnetic fields point downwards on the page. In motors, once the small loop is pointing ~close to the same direction as the applied field (e.g. downwards on the page), we can reverse the applied field (e.g. upwards on the page) of the bigger loop so that the magnetic moment of the smaller loop seeks to align itself in the other direction. The small loop's momentum will carry it forward so that it's magnetic field faces into the page before spinning 90° more to align upwards on the page with the applied magnetic field. If we reverse the bigger loop's field one more time, the smaller loop will pass by its original orientation, making 1 full rotation, before its magnetic moment heads towards the bottom of the page again. Usually with Electric Vehicle motors, the matter that rotates is a permanent magnet, while the loop applying the external magnetic field is energized by the Lithium-Ion battery (e.g. a Brushless DC Motor (BLDC Motor) or a Permanent Magnetic Synchronous (AC) Motor (PMSM)). In some of Tesla's cars, the battery still powers the outer loop, but the inner, rotating matter is a loop of wire arranged in a "squirrel-cage" configuration (AC Induction Motor). Imagine a cylinder of steel with small gaps cut out so that in top-down view it looks like a gear. Fill in those gaps with a copper conductor, then connect all of those conductors with copper disks at the top and bottom of the cylinder. Believe it or not this actually works and doesn't short out the rotor and cause fires lol. The metal has too high a melting point, and the induced current is too low to melt the rotor but high enough to produce enough force to rotating a shaft and eventually move the wheels! Phew, point is, girls know stuff! Nuff said!

@remmek2
@remmek2 Жыл бұрын
@@Gumbi4ever Not sure about the 'no brainer'. It takes about 5 years for a solar panel to make back the electricity it took to make the panel. Then you are finally enjoying solar power, at an efficiency rate that is significantly less than when new. And has a life of maybe 10 yrs left. Taking into account the costs involved, effect on value of your home, and consequences to the environment (usually overseas), the decision isn't a 'no-brainer'.
@Gumbi4ever
@Gumbi4ever Жыл бұрын
@@remmek2 thanks for this info. At least according to the manufacturers specs, the efficiency doesn't drop as quickly as you are stating. And of course nothing is a no brainer in actuality, but it's hard to say that the decision was a net negative compared to not doing it. I mean I guess I could have donated the money to a cause, but that is a broader moral argument.

In BC (🇨🇦)… yes, the province of temperature extremes driven by climate change, 2021 has been documented by BC Hydro as the year of the greatest electricity demand ever recorded. It is taking massive amounts of electricity just to stay warm in winter and cool in summer. The production of this electricity takes a lot of metal, water, and other resources. Another problem, as seen during this pandemic, is that people do not like to say home. People are always on the move. I constantly wonder how my province will be able to produce enough clean electricity to power cars too? And then there’s the Lithium issue. It seems that society has fallen in love with battery powered stuff (yes, I’m part of that population) which also places huge demands on the grid. I am not a Luddite… but these are important questions that have been on my mind for quite a while. Thanks for this great video Gittemary… it aligns with my questions. THANK YOU! I keep seeing EVs pushed as some magic pill, without considering the other aspects of it. Not every charging port is renewable powered, and nor are many homes. I'd really like to see a big push to recycle existing components/cars into more efficient models and using vehicles until they're done, rather than just getting rid of them. I also have a pretty big issue with telling people that they're unsustainable because they can't afford a $30,000+ car payment. People are struggling to pay for food right now, and someone wanting to push a new bill on them just gripes. I have a 2011 car that gets decent mileage, but I bought a small place in town so I could limit my driving. I bike or when/where I can and and try to combine all of my driving trips into one day. I plan on keeping my car for as long as I can and taking care of it. My hope is by the time I need a new one, I'll be able to afford a gently used hybrid that will last me a while.

Spoken as a girl who works and lives with cars: there is a difference with what kind of petrol you use, actual lifespan (not the projected ones from research papers because they are rarely true) of electric cars' batteries, car lobbies lancing "new and improved" electric vehicles every year while actually having minor improvements much like phones, lets not forget the Nissan Leaf and its bursting in flames incidents because of the "new and improved" batteries, and then there is the vintage car aspect (driving a 30 years+ cars), WHEN and WHY would you swap our cars, etc. To make this video there are also many other points of notice I definitely forgot to mention here, but it is not as simple as to read a few projected reports that have nothing to do with actual cars. Especially since the batteries are being thrown away already, production costs, labour exploitation in manufacturing the vehicles, material sourcing for the cars, since the car service materials are "easier for mechanic" meaning more parts that needn't replacing get replaced, oh and lets not even point out the "bluetech technology" which is basically piss (uric acid) in your car to condense the insoluble particles we call "emission" just to make them explode out of your car at one go instead of excreting them a bit day by day just so you convince the EU that you've made a sustainable SUV. AND lets us even go to what happens to the car once you get rid of it... There is so much to unpack here so this video actually does not tackle the sustainability with every possible aspect in mind, but rather it sounds as if it is done by popular demand. There is way more knowledge of engineering and politics and knowledge about car lobbies needed for this talk than just "a girl who knows how the different motors work".

Fossil fuel power plants are much, much more efficient than internal combustion engines. Even if you charge off a Gas Power Plant, that plant is often running at 60+% efficiency, not ~20%. Combining the cars efficiency with the plants and allowing for grid losses, you are usually still ahead on efficiency. Power plants also generally put off fewer secondary toxic chemicals that engines aren't efficient enough to avoid. Stand near a running diesel truck to see what I mean.

My partner needs one to get a job, it is a CONDITION to get the job, even if it is not a job in transports or delivery stuff and we live in a city with a quite good public transport network. And also, when we want to bring our dogs with us, like on holiday or at family's 1/ they are not allowed in public bus (at least in my city) 2/ their train ticket costs 50% of full price, 3/ carpool drivers often don't accept animals in their car. Whether electric vehicles are sustainable depends on the source of the electric because if the electric is still fossil fuels dependent it's not sustainable and is actually a form of greenwashing. Even the manufacturer of vehicles is probably not sustainable. Loved 🥰 the video and love 💞Gittemary.

Not really. Even if electricity is 100% coal, an EV is still slightly less polluting than petrol. Plus, nowhere electricity is 100% fossil - even countries like Poland or some states in the US heavy on fossil, at least a 20% it's renewable - Hydro, usually. Then, of course, a EV car on 100% renewable is better than an EV on 20% renewable - and all those are less polluting of a car 100% petrol.

@@fabiogalletti8616 Keep in mind we will still need fossil fuel to make the car itself, the insides - dash, carpeting, seats, head liner, component (wire) coverings, etc. But yes, greenwashing is a concern...

I might have missed it, but did you talk about the plastic pollution from the car tires? I understood that because electric cars are heavier due to the batteries, the tires wear out faster causing even more micro plastics
@fabiogalletti8616
@fabiogalletti8616 2 жыл бұрын
yes and no. The problem did exist, but it's a tiny percentage of overall pollution. I have an EV that weight 1580kg - the petrol equivalent is 1480kg. Does 100kg, 6% more weight, really grind down tires sensibly more? Add, EVs didn't use the brakes so much: it get natural to drive with one pedal, lifting the foot kick in the rigenerative brakes (aka, the engine became a dynamo and consume speed to recharge the battery) and the mechanic brakes are just for going to very slow to full stop. Less wear on brakes does balance the supposed more tires wear? Probably. But all those are just small numbers, compared to the pollution of an engine with exaust versus no exaust at all.

There is a battery recycling company that does have a cost efficient method of recycling batteries. I don't remember the name of the company, but what they do is flash freeze the battery pack for transport, which makes transport safe and also makes the battery able to be safely shredded. They then have a cost efficient method for recovering about 99% of the battery. How do I know about this? I watch other KZfaq videos that I also trust. I don't want to give the name of that other channel; because, I don't want to chance losing access to this channel by directing people away from it. A lot of the battery waste can be reduced by the increased usage of super or ultra capacitors.

No real mention of the need to move away from cars in general and how unsustainable car dependent low density suburban design is no matter what the fuel source. In a well developed transportation system (not only in dense cities) cars would only play a minor role in transportation and most people would get around walking, cycling, and public transport.

It won't be sustainable if we all go with electric cars. I guess the real problem is that is that in 2022 we still live in the idealistic life of the 60s where everyone work in the city and live in the countryside... It makes me mad when I see empty bus and empty trains running, bcs everyone take its own car... We should make it easier and much cheaper for everyone to take public transportation

Public transportation is just not viable for so many people and i can only imagine if public transportation became more widely used where i live because to get from my house to work or to the store using public transportation just takes way too long and there really isn’t a way to make that shorter just because of the distance and the stops or transfers that would need to be made. I don’t like the push for electric and public transport for everyone and there needs to be a better way.

The better way is building cities to be walkable and bikeable, and if you live in rural areas, enjoy walking for miles, it can be done, my dad 's family didnt have a car until 1960 so they walked or biked every where, build up not out, but Americans aren't going to do that. There are electric car charging stations in my town. If you own a tesla you can only charge your car there. If you own it and live outside my town you need to drive here to charge it. It’s hundreds of miles away from other charging stations. It’s wasteful right now.

It was a well thought out and presented video. You did fall into a few holes, but the general gist was correct. Ultimately EV's alone are not a solution, but they are an important part of building a cleaner more sustainable future. Put it this way, once ICE cars are gone, nobody will be calling for their return.

The freaking battery isn't sustainable. Sure the car might look cute but the waste made to create the fucking battery not to mention how the electric is made (same fossil fuels or worse like coal is used) is ugly...... Keeping your existing car running optimally and getting filters to filter out the waste gases to lessen the impact.
@ulissedazante5748
@ulissedazante5748 2 жыл бұрын
Data proved otherwise. An electric car "cradle to grave" polluted less than an equivalent combustion engine car. The batteries will have a second life as stationary accumulators for the grid, then they will be recycled - because the metals inside are cheaper than new raw lithium from a mine. And, granted, there is a matter of how electricity is made: but even in the worst scenario, there is a % of renewable in the mix, and you use 60% of that energy to move. And, of course, the renewable % will go up in the future. A petrol car must use 100% fossil fuel, now and in the future, squeezing an anemic 20% of efficiency and wasting 80%. So, no, in no way a internal combustion engine, no matter what filter you may add, is less impactful than an electric car.
