The Imperial Clipper from Gutamaya is their second most expensive Imperial status symbol - but the question is, is it all style and no substance, or is it actually any good - and is it something that's good enough to fly the flag of the Empire
In this video, I go through my personal impressions on this Imperial machine.

Review of the Clipper this week, as suggested by @Nafresreom on the comments for the Mamba review. Hope y'all enjoy it

The humble clipper may be a multipurpose ship, but its king in one area... PvP Ramming, the combination of a high base hull mass, wide af wings for "clipping" the enemy, the class 7 slot, and being able to move ridiculously fast for how much it weighs easily makes it in the top 3 for pure ramming ships. My one clocks in at 570m/s with a mass of 1,100T, pair that with 4 OC frags, and well, Braben have mercy on those poor fdls

I love the Clipper. Starting out in 2015, I used to trade in it and also did some basic bounty hunting before engineering was a thing. Nowadays, after I returned and achieved pretty much everything I wanted in the game, I used one thanks to the size 7 internal (Universal Limpet Controller) to unlock Caustic Sinks. I have one for laser mining, and also one dedicated to High Grade Emissions farming/looping, because of the stellar SuperCruise pitch rate. As others mentioned, it is a good pirate ship and also a nice pvp rammer, although I don't know anything about those. It is a joy to fly it. I also like its big sis, the Cutter, which made me space rich. And the small sis iCourier for exobiology, which made me even more space rich. But the Clipper is special. It is there when the game throws you a silly task, and you need big internals, speed, armour and must be cold too, while still packing some deterrent guns. Or for Titan farming. Bask in Her Glory.

My ship of choice for at least 50% of my gameplay in ED. One of the best available.

My Clipper is set up as an explorer, because if I'm going to spend dozens of hours in the black in a ship, I want it to be a ship I enjoy spending that much time in, and nothing compares to the Clipper for that, and with a class 7 fuel scoop, I can easily travel far and fast in style and luxury

Always found that there was a better option, so put off the Clipper until recently. The Large landing pad was always a big negative for me. But when the Titan's showed up and we got the chance to go inside the Maelstrom's the Clipper rose to the surface. You actually need something multipurpose, and it runs cool enough to often slip by unnoticed. IF you're venturing into the caustic clouds and don't want the big rebuys that come with the big 4, this is a go to for Maelstrom related activities!

I like to outfit my clipper for purpose activities, like material farming either in open space or on the surface, interrupting bgs activities, or pretending it can gank and attacking players in something they can actually fight back against, often with flechettes and cannons

Clipper is my go to core miner, good speed, good enough maneuverability around asteroids, and it's canopy is perfect for skimming the ring looking for cores. Don't need a huge cargo bay since I don't want to spend hours trying to fill that, and jump range, even though it's not terrible, is a non-issue since I have a carrier.

I'm partly convinced that the large hard points on the wings are meant to be turreted and controlled by the copilot. And personally, I find the clipper to be one of the best black market runners. Like the clippers of the sailing days of earth, she's large enough to need big ports but will be there smallest ship at the bar. She's got enough teeth to bite but can choose to leave larger and more dangerous ships at a whim. You don't even need to go into silent running with illicit cargo if you got g5 dirty drive engines. And those engines are great for planetary operations if you're exploring

optimization be damned, it should be illegal for a ship to look this elegant, my go-to for a good while now.

Love the Clipper, piloting it is a joy. It just takes some jiggery pokery to make it effective at anything apart from just the joy of flying it 😅

Yep, definitely needs some tweaking to get the best out of it, but it's a good ship to fly once you get the build right and fly with it's strengths in mind to work around the weaknesses.

o7 great Video and the title really fits. I always look at the beauty of the ship and try tp forget the tiny legs, that ruin it a bit :D But one of the best cockpits in the game, good internals and surprisingly good maneuverbility, especially in supercruise! So always worth a spot in the fleet
@gamingsnipsandbits

I don't actually mind the tiny feet it sits on - feels like a very minimalist approach, allowing you to concentrate on the rest of the ship - the main event as it were. Did take a while to gel with this ship, but now I have, it's there to stay in the main fleet. o7

Haven't bothered to rank up enough for the Clipper yet, there's so much else to do. I'm not sure what my current rank is, with the Empire. I managed to pick up a free Courier as a CG reward, but I'm not even sure I rank high enough yet to buy one of those. Love the ship reviews. Well written & produced. o7

Like many multi role ships there are often better ships. But, I did find a specialist role for mine and that was diving into the maelstrom’s with a cool running ship. That was until the glaives came along and then I bought myself a cutter for more utility points and hull. That said, I find that the clipper along with my mamba are really good at smuggling (Collin tunings again). If there is a lot of cargo then I use my clipper; if I am likely to fight I use my mamba. So I suppose there is a specialist role for the clipper. Loving these reviews btw.

Glad you're enjoying them, thanks🙂. Y'know I've been meaning to return to the maelstrom for a few weeks - never thought about taking the Clipper in there, but I'll have to give that a go - if nothing else it'll do a better job than my Alliance Crusader is doing with 'goids at the moment (love the Chieftain and Challenger, but the Crusader is a bit lacking for me at the moment)

The clipper is also a very good pirate ship because of its speed.
@gamingsnipsandbits

Out of the three "pure" Gutamaya ships, this one is probably the best for piracy - it has the legs to keep up when the target is fleeing, and the same legs for when the authorities want to pull you over for a "chat" - y'know the sort of chat that involves lasers and missiles.

What is the best ship for exobiology without SRV?
@gamingsnipsandbits
@gamingsnipsandbits 9 ай бұрын
I don't know if it's the "best" per se, but I've become rather fond of my DBS for exobiology without an SRV. It's good decent visibility, a small frame so can land anywhere and the jump range isn't bad either.
@vincore2845

I use the Imperial Courrier. With engineering you can have a boost speed of over 700 m/s which makes getting down to the surface, or boosting back into supercruise take no time at all. And it has great shields that let you bump and scrape your way to finding samples at pretty high speed. You can even add an SRV if you want one or go without, your call.

Too many compromises coupled with the large pad requirement rendered this ship useless as far as my fleet was concerned, and more since the arrival of the fleet carrier. I simply have no need for a middling large ship that stands out in exactly nothing, besides the "looking good" department. Clipper is a vessel to own early in the game when you're on your way up the experience / financial ladder, and provides an excellent platform for module experimentations at a decent cost.

It's a decent ship indeed but in combat even an ASP Explorer can match up to it unfortunately. But it can still bully the small ships without any issues.

I still insist that the Clipper is the actual Courier, since the courier in FEII looks more like the Clipper, and the ED Courier looks nothing like the FEII Courier.

Either way though, they're both bloody good looking ships. Doing a bit of reading , the FE2 Courier had a mass of 480T, which is substantially closer to the E:D Clipper (400T), so you might be onto something there

It's an OK, fun ship. I use mine for combat and it is serviceable enough while it is criminal that it is a Large footprint ship. Not remotely as decisive as the Python (gathering mats just to clear away the radar clutter of vanquished NPC Pirates wreckage). It is however, there for a change of pace. It does balance out my Fed Gunship, which for obvious reasons I called Bengal. Oh do keep up. What's the capital of Bangladesh? Yes! The Fed Gunship has all the ....

I forgot to mention it, but I found that manually scooping mats up with the cargo hatch was a bit hit or miss. Using a limpet controller solves that issue, but I may have forgot to pack one at the time 😆

@@gamingsnipsandbits Wow, I would neve manually scoop up mats. Gives plenty of time for your shields to recover I guess but then I turn off my Cargo Hatch as a matter of course on any ship on which I don't have a Collector Limpet controller. I never considered this ship as a combat/mats collector. Loading up on Guardian Shield Reinforcements. Python for the win.
