The Importance of Critical Listening (and how to do it)

I've learnt more orchestration techniques from doing this than any other method of learning.
Aiden and I talk about the pros and cons of studying music at university and how we also use critical listening to better our own methods. Granted, there's many things it can't teach you, but as a practice for understanding what it is that makes other composers' work successful, it could be the best way forward for a lot of people - especially given the current climate.

I simply love how goofy Marcus can get even tho he is one of the top instrumental composers on this platform. It gives me this kind of relief that he is not one of those egotistical snobs, but instead this bubbly guy that just loves creating music, which I'm grateful for and appreciate it. Love your music, keep it up, proud of you

It is sad that some people are compelled to deconstruct the thing they love. Like you said it does take the magic away but you gain the power to create that magic for others, it's a trade off I suppose. Love your work.

In all seriousness though the more I do it the better I'm becoming at 'switching gears' between analysis and enjoyment mode, even with the same pieces of music. Just takes time!

Absolutely loved watching this. I really was looking for something like this to watch from one of my favorite composers! I'm working on a couple pieces of my own and I mix some music here and there, but haven't really done anything officially yet. My biggest problem is finding a system to make the music, I am dirt poor, so I can only mix my own through some cheap systems. But the fact that you break it down with your friend here really hits it personal and I totally get it! Love it and thank you for the help!

Critical Listening is definitely what helped me start producing music. I struggled for a while until I had the idea to just close my eyes, listen to a number of songs, and mentally pick and figure out each “instrument” (or in this case synths) as well as their patterns, melodies and chords. Ive been using this method to help me produce better, but I never thought to practice by recreating what I hear in my DAW. After seeing this I will definitely be trying that.

I stumbled upon your channel from your post about the Hans Zimmer strings review you did (saved me some money!). I then saw this on your channel. I am surprised at the similarity of interests I have with you. The styles of music match mine - your music choice of from "Two Steps from Hell" - purchased several of their albums. Great Choice - and I am absolutely going to adopt this approach of studying and pieces like this and recreating them to learn - lovely idea! Both this video and your Hans Zimmer videos - I really appreciated the photography and how you were both miked for the audio - really well done! Putting the subjects on the 3rds showing up so many times in the video. Your including Rick Beato's comments - another channel I subscribe to and products that I have purchased from. I will certainly keep checking out your channel. Awesome. Thank you.

Hi Marcus! Thank you so much for this video! I am a music composer but I am just starting out. I have been wondering whether or not to go to university for music production. This video was really helpful for me! Thanks for both of your opinions on the topic. It was also fun to see how you and Aiden learn from breaking down other peoples compositions. I do this in my head but I can see how it could be more beneficial to do it in Logic Pro with the keyboard. I will be checking out your other videos like this one. Thanks so much and happy summer. :)

Just a suggestion: you should make a video on all of your libraries and make recommendations. Been on the lookout for a good all in one library like Spitfire's BBC Symphony Orchestra, but I'm not sure if it would be better to buy every section together or separately!

I'd be quite interested if you actually released that deconstruction (around 8:20). It's clearly similar, but also different enough I think it could stand on its own. The part at 7:36 describes what's in my opinion the best part of that track (you said Ostinato, but as an amateur music enthusiast, I'm not sure if that's the instrument or the style!). I love the rapidly ascending notes there, or really any similar sort of rapidly-driving repeated notes that add energy to the song * (hint hint :D). I would also suspect that he's right about what they are saying in that choir. For most of them, I've never figured out what they are saying, but it's definitely not gibberish, and probably not Latin. Probably. *Another example I think you'd recognize (well, of course!) would be this one: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/iNp4fZudq7vWh30.html. I also like the remake, but the original shall always be special to me, and not just because I heard it first. Another interesting part is when the horns slide, via some sort of high-pitched instrument, into the rest of the sequence at about 3:24. I always feel that epic orchestral music is even better when it's inspired by something (in this case literally) magical.
