Hello, I recommend Until the Last Man (if you haven't seen it) it is very good and emotional

Lucas actually found 73 people. They have stayed in touch with some as well as the man who loaned the phone. His family did perish. They were never able to establish contact with Daniel’s Dad. It’s presumed Daniel’s mom died in the Tsunami. Lucas is a doctor in France.

73 people? Wow, that's amazing. I tried looking to see how many he actually found and reunited, and also about the man that loaned the phone, I couldn't find any information about it. Such a terrible tragedy.

@@WolfLove89 the man that loaned the phone, they stayed in contact with him. They have also remained in contact with many that Lucas located. Maria did pen a letter, in the LA Times, I believe, to the deceased mother of Daniel. Maria is a motivational speaker now. If you search Maria Bolon a lot of info will come up. She underwent 16 surgeries during the 4 months she was in the Singapore hospital. Sh was injured much worse than the movie portrayed. She had several broken bones, and ended up losing part of her leg. The whole family was part of the retelling of their story. They picked the actors that portrayed them. They returned to, and stayed at the resort, to help face what happened to them. They were there during filming. A remarkable family, that came out strong.

I hate how Bayona always makes me cry but I appreciate the fact that at least in the impossible and society of the Snow, he fought the assumption that people would first look after themselves and would turn cruel because what usually happens is this: the community doing anything to help each other and love and humanity prevails. I highly recommend The Orphanage (his opera prima, it's horror) and A Monster Calls (which talks about grief, also a tearjerker)

I love the way in which he narrates these stories with so much respect, sensitivity and elegance without losing the impactful action of these horrid events. He just gets better and better.

One of the things that surprised me about this movie is how real the tsunami looks, it doesn't look like it was made with CGi because it would be noticeable, so I think they flooded real sets with thousands of liters of water and probably the use of miniatures too, they are old film techniques, much more realistic than the current cgi, but unfortunately few use them anymore, because they are expensive and time consuming, today they prefer to do everything on a computer and the result leave much to be desired. Bayona is always looking for realism, that's why I'm not surprised that he has resorted to the old techniques to achieve it.

There is actually a video available from the shooting of the tsunami scene, yes, they used practical effects, models and so, that's why it looks so real.

Last scene in the airplane is such a bittersweet ending, especially since it's based on the real experiences of the survivors. I'm glad that the family survived, but at the same time the note that says "We are at the beach"... the gentleman who helped reunite them likely lost his wife and his little daughter, like so many survivors have lost loved ones. And those children who were with Simon and Thomas, who knows what's in store for them! And the locals, the hospital staff, I'm still amazed at their kindness toward the tourist victims despite their own pain and desperation to know that their families are safe. I can't begin to imagine what this family thought in the middle of this waking nightmare. They were incredibly lucky to survive. Thanks for your reaction!

Your reaction was so similar to mine. What an emotional heartbreaking movie and what a tragic thing that happened. I cried again with you watching this. And i just found your channel and subscribed because you're wonderful. How wonderful that they were able to find each other but so sad for everyone else who lost their lives or loved ones and how traumatic the whole situation is my god. The kid Lucas in real life went on to become a doctor because of this experience, and he also said he never wanted that feeling of not knowing what antibiotics to give his mom again

You kept using the words "gorgeous" and "beautiful" to describe the scenery before the disaster hit, and I was saying the same about you. You are drop-dead gorgeous and seem like such a sweetheart. Juan Antonio Bayona won the Spanish equivalent of the Oscar for this movie and should've also been nominated for an Academy Award. Only Naomi Watts got nominated, but it put Tom Holland on the map, and I knew when I saw his performance he'd become a big star. Ewan McGregor and Bayona, Holland, and Watts were nominated for other awards. All 3 won different awards. Most don't know that the old woman who was watching the stars with the young boys is Geraldine Chaplin- the oldest daughter (and one of 11 children) of Charlie Chaplin. I loved The Impossible and wanted it to be more recognized at the Oscars. I will watch Society of the Snow now (thanks to you and your fans) now that I know it's the same Director. Then, I'll probably be pissed that the movie didn't win the International Film category at the Oscars. When you do your research about The Impossible- you'll see that with 230,000 deaths in the Boxing Day Tsunami (which was caused by a 9.1 massive earthquake that ripped through a fault in the Indian Ocean)- it was IMPOSSIBLE that ALL 5 in a family -including 3 young kids ripped in all kinds of directions were ALL able to survive and (like you said) even find each other in all the chaos. Maria Belon did lose part of her leg, but all is well to this day. She is a motivational speaker and an advocate for tsunami survivors. Most of the extras in this movie were also Boxing Day Tsunami survivors. I look forward to becoming your fan and watching more of your videos.

And actually the reason Bayonne had the beginning start with the sounds of a jet engine, was because Maria said the tsunami sounded just like one. The real family was on set the whole time helping them with the details. They said the biggest "lie" in the film was the real ball they were playing with was yellow and not red. The real Maria explained how being under the water it hit her so hard and so fast, she was spinning around so much she literally couldn't tell which way was up or down. She thought she was going to die and she hoped her sons were already dead because she didn't want them going through this. Then she heard and saw Lucas screaming for her in the distance once she finally found the surface and it brought her back to life.

If you are afraid of deep water then I doubt scuba diving is for you. It means you are diving deep enough to require supplementary oxygen via a tank and this is a skill which requires training and certification. I think you are talking about snorkeling (briefly shown at the beginning of this film) which doesn't require training but you should be a competent swimmer and comfortable swimming in water that has a deep depth. Most living coral reefs are in deep water but extend high enough that you only have to go 3-10 feet down when snorkeling. Never been snorkeling in Thailand but having lived 7 years in Indonesia, it's magical if you get the chance. (And given the rate of coral bleaching that's been rapidly taking place worldwide, best to do that sooner than later!)

If you want other survival movies, of the most outstanding: Cast Away with Tom Hanks, one of the most famous, is fiction, not based on a true story, THE REVENANT with Di Caprio and Tom Hardy, based on a true story, EVEREST from 2015, that one is based on a true story, THE GREY with Liam Nesson, that one is fiction, 127 Hours, based on a true story, ALIVE, the Hollywood version of the Andes tragedy, also has its point.
