When I used to play Arma3 with a hardcore realism group I used to play standing at my desk, wearing a weight vest with 8-10 kgs and do pushups on my balancing board if I died. That got me playing pretty smart.

Even though tarkov is definitly very punishing when you die, the way players move and behave certainly hasnt achieved the goal. People do all kinds of arcadey shit like jumping out of windows 2 stories down quickly pop a med and then run around like nobodies business

@@karmakut That is a fair point but to be fair i think the game mechanics themselves also introduce a lot of emphasis on using every mechanic the way they currently are. For example taking single shoots has a huge reason why you would use it irl. It saves ammo, its accurate and for most distances you dont need more. Instead in tarkov we see guns modded for insanely low recoil and some incredibly high recoil on single shot guns.

It's a flawed premise entirely. You can't make people care enough to not take risks, because taking risks *is why they're playing the game*. It's a shooter, no matter how tactical, no matter how team based. If someone thinks they can get away with something, they're going to try it - because that's why they're here.

Insurgency has amazing gunplay and I wish there was more in-game tools for people to make custom scenarios. The mainline modes do get a tad stale after you've played a bunch. I would looove a slower paced no knock raid kind of mode, or a target area compound assault where coordinating movement actually matters.

Realistic games usually fall into the trap of very low TTK. For some reason, no bullet spread and 1-2 shot kills have been the standard in tactical shooters since the early days of the genre. But neither of these features are realistic, nor do they promote realistic gameplay. IRL, marksmanship under stress is very difficult and accuracy is much worse than on the range. The issue is, players in a video game aren't under any kind of stress, and games don't have punishing enough spread and sway. A lot of tactical shooters don't even have any bullet spread or sway, or let you "hold breath" to cancel sway (which is not how that should work, lol). IMO games should make gun sway worse under fire to simulate this. As far as I'm aware, not a single tactical shooter does this. IRL, people don't usually die in one shot either, especially in the modern day among soldiers wearing rifle-rated armor. I think tactical shooters need to focus less on respawning right after dying, and more on receiving treatment from your teammates. Squad and Arma both seem to do this well. "But if TTK is high, then won't it just turn into COD?" This is where punishing death comes into play. Small arms may be much deadlier in tactical shooters than IRL due to the reasons mentioned above, but death is also much more punishing. People get suppressed not because of magic screen-blur - they're scared of dying. Since a game can never accomplish this level of punishment, I think very long respawn times combined with a severe suppression effect could bridge the gap to create realistic firefights. What do you guys think?
@truedemoknight6784

I'd also like to see less omniscient player maps - maps that display the location of yourself, and every teammate, base, and spotted enemy. That information should be reserved for platoon or squad leaders. It should be the job of the platoon leader to inform squad leaders of the objective, and friendly and enemy locations, and the squad leader should disseminate that info to his riflemen. Team or platoon-level radio should be limited to squad leaders as well. Limited information would make lone wolfing a lot harder, since you're suddenly dependent on your squad leader for information and navigation. Separating from your squad becomes punishing - you could get lost or friendly-fired, and if you're injured, no one will treat you.

People die to one shots all the time. People also tank 27 shots with 16 hitting the plate and then get knocked out by a grenade only to wake up and kill 2 dudes. The human body is a hard thing to model by damage values. I will say this in video games death is sometimes just a good stand in for incapacitation. Waiting for your character bleed out for 30 mins because you stepped on a bomb doesn’t sound like a fun gaming experience. Even here in arma 3 where you can get knocked out its ultimately because your teammates can revive you to a 100% healthy dude.
@Dash62g
@Dash62g Жыл бұрын
Been thinking about it for a while and I'd be interested in seeing a game try balancing brazen, kill-greedy players by either ommitting a death system, or making only the worst injuries kill. Have it much more likely that a given injury will incapacitate you, but NOT kill you, so going down becomes a burden on your team. Make getting an incapacitated teammate back into fighting shape cost resources and time, so people are more careful with their fragility and cost as a unit. I think the fear of forcing your team to take risks to get you back, costing your team resources in a more detrimental way than squad, would be interesting. Thinking resources like squad, medical of ACE or Tarkov, with perhaps a bit of World of Tanks style "1 life per match" kinda thing. I know I'm sorta describing Squad or ARMA one-life ops, but a game focused around that could carve its own niche, i think.

i think this is an idea. but i dont think it would get wide appeal. as the more "costs" you put on the game the less fun it becomes to play. the more effort i have to put in to get to the shooty bit is the more likely i will play it less often. i made a comment above this but i think the key thing to do is not add extra baggage and punishments to deaths but to change how people insert themselves into the world and to "feel" real. that thing i am talking about is the movement. if you change the movement to be realistic and not "gamey" with garbage mechanics like spamming Q and E rapidly to avoid bullets while shooting it sucks you into the world more than any type of punishment put on death could ever do. because movement is our connection to the world and how we insert ourselves into it. and also the facotr that out subconscious or even our conscious mind is constantly evaluating to determine "is this real" or is this not? and when you brain decides oh yeah this isnt real. then people play like it isnt. change the movement change the game. movement is the most important factor to any video game especially games that try to be "realistic" as possible like milsims
@LakevusParadice
@LakevusParadice Жыл бұрын
i want you to know i do appreciate these small video essays you put out sometimes about the current situation and dilemmas of games with that i want to say. the number one thing. the most important factor for these realistic games we play is. movement movement is the most important factor of any game. if you can get the movement to feel how you want people to actually feel in game this will do leaps and bounds more than making lives punishing. I will admit ive played on dayz servers where you get one life and you get banned from the server. and it is something else to experience. but if you want the standard gameplay. standard meaning just what the normal game feels like when you dont seek out those special types of circumstances. movement is the most important factor for making people "behave" realistically in game. movement is what makes a game.

Modern shooters today don't even try to be immersive. It is not due to the players but due to the developers doing everything to make it look like a video game: from weird weapon skins, silly characters, and HUD elements like XP appearing after everything you do, hitmarkers that block your vision from actually seeing your bullet hit, and hit sounds that are designed to sound like some kind of a cashing machine or something.

It would be nice if Squad had a bunch of custom game modes. 1 life, 2 life, king of the hill, custom AAS points, plant a bomb like CS, etc… I’ve done a few events on private servers and it seems to turn into “make up the rules as you go”. And whoever is the best at making up the rules wins. I think this could work for public servers too. Have mini-events. Like Friday Night Fights or Hump Day King of the Hill.

Agreed. The majority of players are lemmings, they will follow whatever is imposed on them. The key is elite buy-in for the new mechanics, once that happens, the community will eventually adopt the elites's acceptance of the changes. Squad seems to be following this event flow as I have seen mostly positive feedback for the overhaul changes.

I think OG Ghost Recon 2001 was on the right track. 1 life, map awareness, accuracy, good use of cover/concealment and route planning was more essential than anything. Gaming companies diverted from it for just one thing ... money from filthy casuals. At least Arma and Squad can be modded to that level just like Karma said.
@SiD19884

one the most realism breaking is the advent of sprint system... it's very simple for games to address this. 1) Simply and entirely remove jump. Nobody does that in real life firefights. Replace it with climb over ledges options and only trigger when nearer to elevated platforms. If there are gaps will have a jump option. making the jump and climb a location specific code. one good way is how RON did it.. which did away entirely with jump and gunfights remained unaffected. 2) Heavy punishment on sprinting. Sprinting is a very stamina intensive activity at least in the way sprints are being implemented in game in terms of speed. Stamina in game is non-existent. A player can sprint for 5 mins and have a perfect transition to aim down sight. Try do that in real life with full gear for one full minute. Your aim will be all over the place. Sprinting short burst are okay so stamina system should heavily be implemented; from weapon sway, accuracy to even ADS speed. Sprinting should be a strategic decision. Not mode of locomotion. Do those 2 things and it will resonate at least with semi-realism crowd like me. I'm not interested or have time for full milsim with long spawn time cos there're better things to do with my time but hey that's just me.

I really wish making deaths punishing would actually convince most players to behave realistically. In most cases, people are still content to go on suicide runs and play everything like it's Call of Duty even if it means they lose their gear. It's very hard to make a game that can convince more "tactically challenged" players to not be morons in ways that ruin immersion for people who actually care about their in-game lives.

Honestly milsim will always be that itch that you wanna scratch but it can never be satisfied whether it be long respawn/ time between engagements. Typically the only people you get to stay long term are the people thats ok with taking over 45 minutes between any firefights and its a slim 1% of players just like star citizen players its a small player following yea alot of people on youtube watch but its a small amount of people that actually do play milsims especially older ones like arma thats why the lib server is been struggling for some time now theres roles that players are less likely to play due to the lack of actual shit your allowed to do with said role especially when you have limits that say you cant play without a certain number of members in your squad. Such as we can't carry over 65lbs else our stamina get really affected and drain significantly quicker (which for Arma is very low In terms of gear, were practically cutting face wear, attachments and back packs simply to cut weight) so this means if we wanna carry more RPGs or 40mm then that's less ammo we can cary, down to like 3-5 magazines.
