Eliot, thank you for talking about your mistakes and leaving them in unedited. As a hobbyist I often make errors when putting this stuff back together, it is refreshing to see a repair video be so honest.

yeah man thats just how it goes. nobody is perfect and admitting it makes you seem more regular, as if you were watching your friend show you something. I always make a small mistake when modifying systems. the only one that I ever did absolutely perfect was a gameboy color and it took hours checking every little thing to make sure it was immaculate and perfectly centered with everything.

Don't mind the poking screws. Treat them as japanese Kintsugi : "breakage and repair are part of the history of an object, rather than something to disguise." It's part of the history of this one of a kind Switch and what you learned while repairing it.

The blue screen is very easy to fix. Hot air station at 450 medium air speed. Flux the nvidia chip and heat it up once it's hot gently push the chip down while the soder sets. For me this fixes the problem roughly 80% of the time
@TheCod3r
@TheCod3r 2 жыл бұрын
I agree somewhat, but it's not always the SoC, the blue screen is a communication issue between the SoC and RAM so it can be either of those things. The problem is a lot of the time you end up with torn traces under the SoC too which means trace repair and reballing
@benbaggen2375
@benbaggen2375 2 жыл бұрын
@@TheCod3r I have never heard of or seen torn pads, unless someone failed a repair attempt. That chip is not going to move enough from a drop to break a trace, and a overwhelming majority of the time blue screen occurs from the shock of a blow. However I have ran across chips that have just went bad and need to be replaced.

Sad to see such a special edition switch in such bad condition I hope it can be fixed! Also nice to see the switch lite being fixed being a more modern console. Good stuff Elliot. The blue screen issue on the other one is caused by a communication issue between the SoC and RAM. You can sometimes fix it with a reflow but determining what chip is the cause can be tricky. Usually I try the pressure test to figure out whether it's the SoC or the RAM. It may also have torn traces which is obviously more tricky to deal with

I've taken apart the Switch Lite a lot and the tiny screws are easy to strip and the ribbon cables for the digitizer and LCD can be super annoying to put back in. I broke an LCD once trying to swap the screen but keep the same color digitizer. I was being careful just lifting a little from the sides but the back layer still separated from the front layer that was stuck to adhesive.

One thing I've learned to appreciate since I got an ifixit set is just having a handful of those blue plastic shims/plectra is worth its weight in gold, just having one or two as kind of like an extra pair of fingers to keep a gap between parts from closing is invaluable. And to join the other comments, I think the grey bezel makes for a pretty nice looking contrast. I know "bezel-less" or bezel-hiding designs are more common nowadays, but I still fondly remember the look of the old gameboys, y'know, it had a certain kind of charme and makes the screen really "pop", visually speaking, from the main body of the console.

That one-handed grip at the end made me nervous. When I take things apart I put some tape on a sheet of paper with an exaggerated drawing of the thing I'm taking apart. I do this for each depth level of the device as well so I don't mix screws that overlap. If needed I even have two sheets per depth level for top versus bottom. I love the gray border around the screen after you had it fixed, I think that design aesthetic works quite well.

My brother and I recently swapped joycon shells on my Switch (full size launch era model) and I can concur that there are so many damn screws to remember where they go etc.. I love how it looks. I got transparent shells for my joycons and the back panel. I've always loved transparent electronics, and I'm super happy that the Switch has that option at least on the custom market... Quite the bummer regarding the screws poking through the casing, but oh well... at least you swapped parts around and you got it working! I could never do that! haha.

It seems heating it up also made it a bit more workable, because I did use quite a bit of force to pop it off the shell to the point where it was curving, but no permanent bends were done AND it worked perfectly fine when I put everything back together.
