The Honno ji incident that Kanata and Polka mentioned is a reference to the assassination of Oda Nobunaga one of the most iconic figures in Japanese history. His death came after he retook Kyoto during the Warring States period. After taking Kyoto he basically ruled all of central Japan but one of his generals Akechi betrayed him and assaulted Honnoji temple (the temple he was staying in) and set it on fire. (This is why Akechi in persona 5 is the trader) Akechi would die fleeing a counter attack. And Oda’s death caused fighting among his allies in which Tokugawa came out on top. (Honno ji temple is visitable today in Kyoto)
